Jeffrey Archer had the chance to sit down with comics legend Frank Miller last year, and we have the first part of his interview in this issue! Also this issue, we have the Late Comics Report by Andrew Troth. Be sure to glance through this report, it can be really helpful! The general feeling on CBN now is that the Marvelution fiasco was a complete and dismal failure. What do the rest of you readers think? Drop us a note at ComicBkNet@aol.com. The WWW page has been updated again; I've been meaning to get rid of that ugly background for awhile, and finally got around to it. That hotlist I promised will be up soon as well, with links to the best comics-related sites on the web. Our subscription list for the e-mag is getting quite long, so I will be starting up a new list for any more subscribers. This should have little to no affect on current subscribers... You will still get the e-mag each week, but the "to:" field may be a bit shorter. Suffice it to say, we're thrilled to have so many subscribers! :) And with that, we begin the 39th issue of the Comic Book Net E-Mag! A. INTRODUCTION On the night of June 12, comic book history was made. In the wake of Marvel Mart, retailers responded by their votes at the Diamond Gem Awards as D.C. came out the major winner of awards and the mantle of power shifted with No. 2 becoming No. 1 over Marvel. Most importantly the keynote speech made by Mr. Frank Miller shook the walls of the convention center. This man, sensitive to creators rights, eloquently spoke of many truths that had for too long been politely hushed. I was fortunate enough to hold a press conference at the Omni Hotel (thank you Bonnie for the coffee) with the legend creators of Dark Horse Comics (thank you Lou Banks). Luckily I had gotten to know Frank a few days before the interview, especially when we found out I had grown up with some of his relatives in my home town in Maryland. With the ice broken, our interview turned into more of a conversation between one of the main creative forces in comics today and a comics retailer; two men with a common bond and a love of comics and the industry. The notes for my interview were thrown to the wind and we centered the interview upon commenting about his beautiful and important speech, then eventually, his new projects. The following interview is in two parts. Part one is The Key Note Address and part two is New Projects. This interview will be broadcast on the award winning cable television show Rapp'n Comics-Flights of Fantasy on B-TV Multivision Cable television in the near future. INTERVIEW: PART ONE JA: What's your reaction to the speech you made last night; I mean how did people react after you talked to them? FM: Well, I'm the last person to ask really. Nobody took a swing at me! JA: Well of course... FM: People seem to have very strong reactions one way or another. If I'd been asked to appear and talk about the future of comics, and the only way I could address that was to talk about the past. To tell the truth, I was sick of how polite everyone has been about crimes that have been committed in comics against the best talent. Maybe the fact that we lost JACK KIRBY just a few months ago added that much more fire to what I had to say. If we're going to have any dignity in the field, if we're going to amount to anything, then we have to recognize who gave us what we've got. If we're going to move forward, we've got to realize where we've been. JA: I think too many times people forget so quickly. FM: They don't just forget, they just plain get it wrong. JA: Well, they get smoozed again; the Marvel Mart happened, then they (Marvel) says, Oh, we (Marvel) won't do that again. You guys also got screwed or rather, our forefathers in the field got screwed. FM: Actually, I never got screwed. I want to be very clear about that. I hope I didn't come across like I was belly-aching up there. JA: You didn't. FM: I've gotten the very best of the system every step of the way. For all that I rally about work for hire, I got the best end of it because I wasn't STEVE DITKO or JACK KIRBY. JA: You've learned from what happened to them. FM: Well, also, I wasn't making up the basic substance of it all, and that's the hardest thing to do. I since learned how hard it is because I'm doing it now. But... I've had their whole work that filled my childhood with joy and it gave me things to work on. I'm one of the lucky generation. So, I'm not complaining on my behalf that way. I've got an income that far surpasses people who were unbelievable contributors to the comics industry. A lot of them died in poverty. So I guess I'm not complaining about my own situation; there's nothing to complain about. JA: Well you do stand up for other people's right and that seems to be an important part of LEGEND also. It's a pleasure to see it, because somebody needs to. Who are they going to potshot at but the man who talks... that's you Frank! FM: Me and my big mouth! JA: I did get to talk to different people after the speech in the industry. I talked to JIM SHOOTER, I talked to Marvel representatives, I talked to D.C. Any time you make a stand on anything and you're a person whose voice people listen to, naturally there's going to be a reaction. I suggested that possibly power structures have been altered, not just because of your speech, but you woke everybody up. We're at the awards dinner; It's a Party, It's a Party. Hey, thanks for the steak. Nobody really thanked Mr. Geppi for the steak though. Then, all of a sudden there's Mr. Miller up there, and he had something to say. I was crying, it was a beautiful speech. FM: I was asked by Diamond Distribution to appear and talk about the future of comics. I took that very seriously to the extent that I had the time. I worked on something that would address what the future of comics would be in my mind; what I wanted it to be, and why. When I wrote it, I realized that comics have got such a strange sense of history that had to be addressed before anything could move forward. Our own relationship with the censors over the years has been certainly confusing. JA: It was incredible what you pointed out about the code; what really happened, that we really won. Nobody acts like that. It was all marketing. Like Rock N'Roll in the fifties. 1957 was an important year. BUDDY HOLLY and all those people went down. CHUCK BERRY got busted. JERRY LEE LEWIS. This was to me like the conspiracy theory. It changed to the white guys singing the black tunes, like Let's clean up this black music. FM: It was the worst possible time in terms of censorship! In how people were ready for it. People were willing to revoke the first amendment. JA: And direct it at Gaines (EC Comics). FM: EC Comics was shut down by his competition, not by the public at large. Not by the U.S. Senate. That never happened. This pack of lies has just been accepted for years and years, so when I was talking last night, I had to bring that up. The best publisher that comics has ever had was shut down by his competition. They used the fear of the time and they came up with a comics code which was nothing but an attempt to shut them down. JA: Well, they finished the Red Scare, they had to go on to comics, right? FM: It's very important to get the facts straight when you're talking about yesterday. Comics are amazing for how much misconceptions and lies there are about them. JA: Today, with people talking about standardizing the code, as a retailer I have no problem with knowing what to sell to who. FM: Right! JA: So I can place it in the right place in my store. Restricted by a strict code or whatever, we are forgetting the knowledge, not just the enjoyment factor. The beautiful writing, the beautiful artwork, as in Jim Silkes' new book RASCALS IN PARADISE. This is fantastic stuff. They're attacking video and etc., and saying Let's go to comics. FM: That's really critical. For one thing, they're not saying Let's go to comics, comics people are once again saying... JA: Oh, it's like They're out there. Right? FM: That's the whole reason I brought it up! They're saying, They're picking on someone else, lets surrender!. JA: Gotcha. FM: It's so important, the whole thing about cover advisories, they're so sneaky, cover advisories. They're kind of easy on the faces, they go, Well it just says it's not for kids, never mind the fact it taking away the retailers rights to decide who it is for. It's taking away publishers rights. It still seems like it's relatively harmless, unless you consider it never existed in books and that Hollywood's a pack of cowards that surrendered to that years ago. The t.v. people, even the cable people surrendered to that point books never have. JA: It's like the last frontier. FM: The publishing industry is where comics belong, comics are not a part of the electronic media. I'd rather be in the publishing industry. O.K., it's smaller... you don't get the billion dollar sales; comics will never get that anyway. What you do get is to be part of an industry that's utterly committed to the first amendment. When you put these little things in the corner of covers, we're selling the next generation of artist out. SUSPENDED ANIMATION knows. Prenatal nostalgia is the sentimental longing for things that existed before you were born. For readers slapping foreheads and muttering 'duh', I don't understand either. But I love old radio shows, movie serials, comic strips, toys, advertising and pulp magazines popular before the '50s. I love DOC SAVAGE and THE SHADOW, and read their new comic book with great prenatal nostalgia. And put it down with great unfulfilled prenatal nostalgia. It wasn't the comic; it was me. The writing is clean, full of action and the touchmarks of both characters. Doc's copper skullcap, Empire State building headquarters, and sidekicks Ham and Monk are here. Lamont's penetrating eyes, network of agents, barking guns and huge black cape and slouch hat are every- where. I hear his haunting, eerie laugh established by the radio show. In this two issue mini-series, "The Case of the Shrieking Skeletons", skeletal horrors invade New York City and the heroic figures of Doc and The Shadow butt heads as the mystery unravels. The plot is perfect for both heroes. Weird monsters, Nazis, secret serums, beautiful women, zeppelins and autogyros add to the '30s period flavor. The art is crisp, exciting and perfectly suited to it's subject. Icons of the '30s add spice to almost every page, and violence is threatening without being excessively bloody. But that same warm familiarity underlying nostalgia that also demands new material hold true to old standards can also produce big yawns if _nothing_ new is added. Nothing new is added. Recommended for those with an unjaded eye. THE SHADOW AND DOC SAVAGE #1s 1 & 2/24pgs. & $2.95 ea. from Dark Horse Comics/Steve Vance, writer; Stan Manoukian and Vince Roucher, illustrators/ available in comic shops and by mail. **MINIVIEW** THE ZONE CONTINUUM [Caliber Comics]. Incredible art and high melodrama in a world of unseen forces. SF. Recommended. (Mr. Vance is a professional writer having written for numerous magazines like CBG, Starlog and Comics Interview. His work has appeared in over 500 newspapers and he's had work published by Comico, Renegade, Innovation and Rip Off Press. SUSPENDED ANIMATION appears in 14 publications reaching 214,000 readers in the U.S., Ireland and Portugal.) ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [6] New Comics Shipping 12/11/95, by Bobb Waller Well it's a day late, (I got a copy of last weeks list yesterday!) PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release -- December 1, 1995 FIGHT CENSORSHIP -- GET CYBERSPACE! Innovative Program Gives Free Access for CBLDF Donations. Spurred by the plight of Oklahoma-based retailers Planet Comics, who are facing a possible combined sentence of 48 years in prison and $100,000 in fines for the possession of "obscene" material, Douglas R. Pratt, proprietor of the Comics/Animation Forum on the CompuServe Information Service has offered a unique challenge to concerned fans. "I've sent a personal check to Comic Book Legal Defense Fund," said Pratt, "I want to encourage each of you to do so, as well. And I'll give you something in exchange. Before you send your check to CBLDF, make a photocopy of it, write your User ID number on it and send the copy to me. If your donation was at least ten bucks, I'll give you a week of free access to Comics/Animation, Comics Publishers, and Funnies Forums." "That's seven days of complete, unlimited access to three Forums." continued Pratt. "Read anything you want, download every file, spend six hours in conference -- it will cost you nothing! The clock will stop when you're in one of my Forums, so it won't take any of your five monthly free hours. Send the check. Send the photocopy. Write your User ID on the photocopy. When I get it I'll drop you a note via E-mail telling you when your free week will begin; it only takes a few days to set such things up." Pratt continued, "If someone who is not a CompuServe member reads of this offer and sends me a photocopy of their check, I'll send them a software pack and a sign-up, and do their free week after the 10 free hours that comes with the sign-up are exhausted." CompuServe is a leading worldwide electronic information provider, serving over 3.5 million subscribers. Pratt's three Comics-related forums have a membership of 65,000. Hundreds of industry professionals have Comics/Animation memberships -- from Neil Gaiman to Dan Jurgens, from Peter David to Gary Groth, and all points in-between! In addition to news, reviews, and lively conversation, visitors to Pratt's forums will find literally thousands of cartoons and comic strips, art from comic books, fan art, and more to download. Most major publishers have their own dedicated sections, and there are also specific areas for manga and anime, independent comics, comic book retailers -- every interest is represented. There is even a section for the CBLDF. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to protecting the first amendment rights of the comic book industry. The CBLDF is currently overseeing several cases. The two most prominent are artist Paul Mavrides' battle with the California Board of Equalization on whether an artist's original artwork holds the same literary status as an author's manuscript, and the defense of Planet Comics in Oklahoma on 7 charges of "obscenity". "Doug's gesture is truly magnanimous," said CBLDF Treasurer Brian Hibbs, "Depending on the extent of a participant's use, he could be giving the equivalent of $100 or more in services. I'm absolutely flabbergasted by this generous offer. However, I'm sure that when new users see the professional and friendly place Doug provides, they'll decide to stick around indefinitely! This is win-win for everyone: the user gets a tremendous value for their tax-deductible donation (including the ability to "hobnob" with nearly innumerable comics and animation professionals), and the CBLDF gets a new revenue source. I want to personally commend Doug for this effort." "The situation is serious, and CBLDF is our best hope to keep innocent people from going to jail," said Pratt, "We have got to act, or we'll have book burnings in this country...and they'll be comic books." Please send your donations to: Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Post Office Box 693 Northampton, MA 01061 Send the photocopy of the canceled check and your User ID Number to: Doug Pratt 2513 Iron Forge Road Herndon, VA 22071 If you need more information, please call the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund at 1-800-99-CBLDF ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [9] Join in the fun! You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However, many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS echo-mail system.... Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the USofA, and many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you have the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network... there are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!) conversation. If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer system. They all give you a better explaination in their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are downloadable from most BBS's. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is LESS THAN 75›! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial information services available! :) So what else can you find on free BBS systems? Theres plenty of files for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most powerful being in a online adventure! And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of replies and all the help you need to join in the fun! Best, --Ry, the editor, with assists from Ed Dukeshire. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [10] BBSes Linked into CBN F=FIDO Q=QWK B=Both *=Major HUB -- ARKANSAS ------------------------------------------------------------ F* Karate & Comics & ...
