ARTISOFT ANNOUNCES LANTASTIC(R) FOR OS/2(R) NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEM First True Worldwide Peer Networking System for OS/2 Users (TUCSON, AZ -- Oct. 3, 1994) -- Artisoft, Inc. announced today a new 32-bit network operating system designed for users of the IBM(R) OS/2 operating system. As the first true widespread OS/2 peer-to-peer network operating system on the market today, the LANtastic for OS/2 network will allow LANtastic network users to easily integrate OS/2 system machines into their existing DOS and Windows(TM) networks. LANtastic for OS/2 network users will be able to connect to key SMB- based network operating system servers, including those from IBM Corporation and Microsoft Corporation. This network is expected to begin shipping by the end of 1994. "From DOS to Windows, Macintosh(R) to UNIX(R), Artisoft offers premier operating system compatibility as well as connectivity to today's principal network operating environments," commented Artisoft Vice President of Software Products Sunil Padiyar. "This announcement marks yet another operating system choice for LANtastic network users and adds key universality to our networking line. "This product is a direct result of our relationship with IBM," continued Padiyar. "We are pleased to have had the opportunity to develop a sophisticated peer network for the users in the OS/2 market." Advanced Connectivity Users of the LANtastic for OS/2 network will be able to connect to Artisoft's family of network operating systems, including LANtastic network versions 5.0 and 6.0, the CorStream(TM) dedicated server, and the Simply LANtastic(TM) network. In addition, users can connect to key servers on such networks as IBM's LAN Server and Microsoft's Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT(TM), and LAN Manager systems. LANtastic for OS/2 network users will also have the benefit of co- existing with Novell(R) NetWare(R) 3 and 4 and LAN Server network client software on the same machine, allowing users to operate on multiple networks simultaneously. "This network is a very desirable solution for existing OS/2 users who are considering networking because it is the only true worldwide OS/2 peer-to-peer solution available. It also offers OS/2 workgroup users an easy way to add peer features to their network while maintaining connectivity to the enterprise LAN," said Padiyar. "Because it is based on the award-winning, mature LANtastic core system, the LANtastic for OS/2 network is one of the most cost-effective, easy-to- use OS/2-based networks on the market today. It combines the 32-bit multi-tasking, multi-threaded power of the OS/2 environment with the LANtastic network's ease of installation, use, and maintenance as well as low cost." Ease of Use Artisoft took advantage of the native OS/2 Presentation Manager Graphical User Interface (GUI) to provide LANtastic for OS/2 network users with an object-oriented design that shields them from the intricacy of the network operating system. This intuitive desktop design provides users with the familiar look and feel of OS/2 for easy network installation and use. Security The tight security features of the LANtastic for OS/2 network extend from individual to group accounts and use Access Control Lists (ACLs) to specify account privileges and access rights. Network administrators will also have the ability to assign time-of-day, day-of- week, drive and resource restrictions. Management A modular server gives network administrators configuration flexibility to load and unload support for features such as auditing, printing and remote accounts. The dynamic task management feature uses OS/2 capabilities to efficiently support a large number of network users. Presentation Manager network programs allow administrators to control client and server performance through such capabilities as drive and printer redirections, account and resource management, audit and notification control, and more. Additional Features The LANtastic for OS/2 network provides support for network applications that use Named Pipes, which provides more efficient interprocess communication between programs on different computers. With Named Pipes, users can take advantage of distributed, client-server applications as well as leading database systems that are based on the SQL (Structured Query Language) software standard. Users will also have the benefit of OS/2 printer queues that provide flexible network control and configuration including rushing, holding, releasing, deleting and viewing the status of print jobs. The LANtastic for OS/2 network software can be configured to use Artisoft's NodeRunner/SI(TM) and Eagle Technology's NE2000(TM) network adapters, as well as a wide range of third-party adapters that are supplied with standard OS/2 NDIS 2.0 drivers. Pricing Artisoft will be offering the LANtastic for OS/2 network in one-, five-, 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-user software kits starting in price from $139 for a one-user kit to $5,009 for 100 users.
