H T M L v i e w ----------------------------------------- Version 0.482 (Beta4.1) - July 9, 1996 (c) Copyright 1996-1996 Software Technologies HTMLview is a program that lets you view HTML pages. HTMLview is a faster way of viewing HTML and URL:s than WebExplorer. It does many but not yet all of the things that WebExplorer does and works both on- and off-line. If you are used to work with WebExplorer you will soon be used to work with HTMLview. NOTE: THIS IS AN EARLY BETA VERSION. IT MAY NOT FUNCTION AS SUPPOSED. PLEASE DO NOT WHINE ABOUT BUGS, READ HELPME.TXT AND ACT ! To start HTMLview: ------------------ Start the program HTMLview.EXE or start the WPS program reference (outlined below). You may put this program (its program reference, not the .EXE file) in the startup folder if you wish. You may enter a URL as parameter to the program. Please note that .HTML files need no be prefixed with file:/// but URL:s must be prefixed with http://. NOTE: HTMLview.EXE will put a .INI file in the directory where it is placed. The file will be found even if start HTMLview from another directory. (Name of the inifile is HTMLview.INI). NOTE: Items added to the QuickList will be saved in a file called QUIKLIST.TXT this one also in the .EXE directory. You may edit this file but yoy MUST comply to the general structure or HTMLview will TRAP! NOTE: If you are unhappy with the name of the .EXE or the .INI file you may rename the .EXE to another name (ex. HTMLV.EXE). Upon starting this "new" .EXE file a new .INI file will be created with the same name as the .EXE file (HTMLV.EXE gives HTMLV.INI). ****************************************************************************** NOTE: USERS OF EARLIER VERSIONS OF HTMLview MUST REMOVE ANY OLD .INI FILES ! ****************************************************************************** TIPS, Not found in menus: -------------------------- - To save a URL object drag it to the desktop (or any folder) with the right mouse button pressed. If you wish to save the webpage as a HTML file instead drag with the Ctrl pressed. - To load a link while a page is loading just click on that link ! - Use the right mouse button to move the splitbar that separates the webpage-window and the QuickList. - Press the right mouse button on top of the QuickList window to get a context menu. - The button that switches between font sizes works even when you are loading a webpage, so does also the graphics on/off button. - Press Esc to stop loading a page. - Drag/drop fonts/color from the Color/Font palette in your System Setup folder and drop them on the QuickList window. Select Options -> Save window setting to save them. To change the text color drag a color with the Ctrl key pressed. - If you prefer loading speed to functionality install Web Explorer 1.03 instead of an later version. Menus: ------- FILE -> Open document Allows you to specify a URL adress to open. (Shortcut = Ctrl-D) Open file You may select a HTML file to open. (Shortcut = Ctrl-O) Reload document Reloads current document. (Shortcut = F5) Save as Allows you to save the current webpage as a HTML file. (Shortcut = F2) Print document Allows you to print the current webpage. NAVIGATE -> Previous Previous viewed webpage (Shortcut = Ctrl-P) Next Next viewed webpage (Shortcut = Ctrl-N) Home page Load homepage specified in File -> Save settings (Shortcut = Ctrl-H) Add to QuickList Adds the current URL to the bottom of the QuickList The QuickList need no be visible. (Shortcut = Ctrl-A) Send mail Allow you to send mail through a mailto URL. Set keybord focus Use this if you cannot use the keyboard to scroll through the active webpage. If you start HTMLview without focus (ex. START HTMLview from a command prompt) this menuitem must be used. OPTIONS -> Font Lets you select the size of the viewing font. This does not update the File->Save settings selection. Beep when loaded Select if you want HTMLview beep when a page has been loaded. Load Graphics Select if you want HTMLview to load graphics on the viewed webpages. Show QuickList Shows (or hides) the QuickList window. Settings Gives you a notebook box with settings. Please se below for more information on what you might specify in this notebook. Selections are saved into your .INI file and get reloaded each time you restart HTMLview. Save window settings Saves the current window position, QuickList position font and colors and restores them the next time you start HTMLview. Save QuickList to disk Save the current QuickList to disk (QUIKLIST.TXT). This is otherwise done when you exit the program. HELP -> Product Information Gives product information (version, copyright) And shows installed version of WebExplorer DLL. Button bar: ----------- The buttonbar contains eight button that often mimics menu items in the pulldown menu. They gray out when the function they represent is not availible. They are (from left to right): Navigate -> Previous Navigate -> Next File -> Open file File -> Save as File -> Print document Options -> Show QuickList Options -> Load graphics Switches between the four font sizes (Small, Normal, Large, Extra large) Stops loading of the current URL (You can also use the ESC key) Navigate -> Send mail Navigate -> Home page Help -> Product Information Status bar: ----------- The statusbar gives information on the loading of the URL:s and the name of the URL currently under the mouse pointer. When printing the statusbar show a static text and the HTML windows is disabled. This is to prevent errors in printing. The Settings notebook: ---------------------- Allows you to change the permanent settings. Selecting OK writes these to the .INI file at ones. They also update the non-permannent settings. PAGE 1 - General/cache Show QuickList, Default show or not the QuickList window. Change font, Select webpage-window font from a font dialog Default font size, Default font size PAGE 4 - Display Use palette managment, Use OS/2 palette management or not Prefer internal viewer, Use internal viewer if one is availible Underline links, Underline all links Load graphics, Defalt load graphics state Preview documents before images, Display all doc text before graphics Ignore image errors, Do /do not display red X over not loaded images Display interlaced GIF:s, How to display them while loading PAGE 5 - Vievers This page is currently empty since viewers are not yet fully supported. The QuickList: ---------------- The QuickList is a place where you place your most often visited links. Its shown as a "listbox-style" window at the right of yor webpage. Though its originally visible it can easily be hidden throught the Options -> Show QuickList menu item or the corresponding button in the button bar. You may also select a default state using the Options -> Settings notebook, [ ] Show Quicklist (first page). To see the URL click ones on the QuickList item and then look at the status bar. To load a link doubleclick on the QuickList item. You add links to the QuickList either by selection the Add to QuickList menu item (shortcut Ctrl-A) or with a right-click on the QuickList window and then select Add manually (where you type in the required information). To change the amount of space the QuickList occupies place your mousebutton on the splitbar (situated between the webpage-window and the QuickList) and press and hold your RIGHT mousebutton. Now drag the splitbar to the new prefered position and drop it there (release the mouse button). To save its position select the Options -> Save window settings menu item. To change the color and font of the QuickList window use the Color and Font palettes of the OS/2 System Setup folder. Just drag and drop the font/color you like (to change text color drag with Ctrl pressed) and then select the Options -> Save window settings menu item when you wish to save. The context menu (right-click on the QuickList window) contains the following items: - Show, Same as doubleclicking on a item in the QuickList - Add manually, allows you to manually enter a QuickList item. - Edit, allows you to edit a QuickList item. - Delete, allows you to remove a QuickList item. - Save Quicklist to disk, same as the Options -> Save QuickList menu item. - Hide QuickList, same as the Options -> Show QuickList menu item. Everytime HTMLview starts it loads the QuickList into memory and everytime you quit HTMLview its saves the content of the QuickList to the QuickList file. If you want to save it while running the program you can select the Options -> Save QuickList to disk menu item. This menu item is also availible in the context menu on the QuickList window. The QuickList file: -------------------- You may edit the QuickList file (QUIKLIST.TXT) yourself (its a pure text file) but you must follow these guidlines otherwise HTMLview might TRAP at load ! The first line in the file is a numeral that specifies the number of title/URL pairs in the file. This numeral must be correct. Following is title/URL pairs. The title may be up to 80 characters and the URL up to 128. They must be placed on one line each. Please note that you may NOT have any blank lines. About the files: ---------------- The main file (HVMLview.EXE) creates a .INI file with its current settings in the same directory as as the .EXE file. This .INI file is NOT dependent of the drive/directory and can easily be transfered with the .EXE file to any drive/directory. The QuickList file (QUIKLIST.TXT) may be transfered in the same manor. HTMLview requires IBM OS/2 Warp or later. HTMLview also requires WebExplorer 1.03 or later (and TCPIP for online work) HTMLview has been tested with OS/2 Warp Connect and WebExplorer 1.1B/C/D. HTMLview has NOT been tested with the Merlin beta. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Installation instructions: - Copy the file to a directory of your choice. - Create desktop icons with program references for HTMLview.EXE. DO NOT drag the icons representing the executables from the file system (Drives window). - If you would like you can create several program references with different URL:s as parameters.
