Hi all. I'm glad that I found this newsgroup. See, I've had this real experence ever since I bought this IBM PS/1. None of this is made up... The first day that I purchased this computer for school everything seemed fine. I noticed, however, that the 3.5" disk drive would turn on by itself occasionally and just sit there. It didn't effect my computing at all, though. I found it odd, but I also find IBM odd so I didn't think much of it. Soon, my Panasonic KX-P4410 laser printer started to act funny. It would, for no reason whatsoever, print one page from time to time with the same text: logdata.a# (I think it was an #, could have been a *) Anyway, I suspected that a bad parellel cable was to blame, so I quickl replaced it. It stopped printing the weird pages for a while, but then started to act funny within a couple of days. The new problem was that the PRINTING led would come on from time to time on it's own. It wasn't the normal blinking light, though. It would slowly turn on, getting brighter then brighter, pause then slowly get dimmer. By this time my 5.14" drive was doing what the 3.5" drive was. It got to the point where I couldn't read any disks. Soon, though, it got to the point were I didn't want to use the damn machine. I say this because after a while, funny things would appear on my monitor First, a few random pixels on the lower-right corner of the screen when in DOS. Soon, the pixel would form little shapes like pyramids, spheres, and cones. By now I thought I had some kind of virus and totally formatted my hard-drive. I didn't wan't to leave this so some little Anti-virus program. It worked. But not for long. Soon, whenever I would boot the computer, a strange white face would appear on the screen for half a second. I can honestly say that it scared the crap out of me! "Just another damn virus, " I thought to myself. I quickly changed my tune when the face decided to stay on the screen when I shut off the computer. You could say that this left me quite, erm, uncomfortable. So what did I do? I did what any person in their right minds would do. I burned the damn thing! I now am the proud owner of a Packard Bell IBM Clone. It was difficult explaining to my parents why I had burned a $1400 computer, but it wasn't impossible. I just said that it was all the pressure from the recent hurricane (Florida's own Hurricane Andrew). I was going to a mental support group, after all. But I PROMISE YOU! I was not imagining the face on the screen... My cousin saw it too. ====___ | Joe Cassara == __/ The Light Is Still Burning, Folks... | jcassara@gate.net == __\ --- ----- -- ----- ------- ----- ------------------
