My friend Tim lived out on a farm as a child near Hays, KS. On nights when there is no moon you couldn't see your own hand in front of your face but could see every star in the universe (it seemed). Isolated, the next farm house was at least 5 miles away. Nothing was visible due to the tree-rows of cottonwoods and poplars that would mark as boundaries to the fields of wheat and created foilage corridors on the dusty dirt roads that formed mezmerizing labrynths to those people not of that area. It began one night as Tim and his sister saw strange lights out in the tree-row. Dismissed as fireflies, they went about their business as they were coming home from a hard days play. Each night they noticed these strange lights and ignored them until one night they became larger as if they were drawing near. At this point they were able to differentiate them from the backdrop of actual fireflies. These lights appeared to be coleman-type lanterns but could not make out any one carrying them. As they drew closer towards the home they disappeared out of sight. No more lights appeared to their recollection. Tim lay in bed one night in his bedroom he had occupied since coming home from Hays Memorial March 15, 1970. His sister Tammy had a room next to his. POUND POUND POUND on the wall of Tim's bedroom wall startled him as he just about to forget the days events and drift off to sleep. Knowing it was Tammy next door pestering her little brother, he returned with a couple of good pounds himself. This exchange went on for a minute or so until Tammy came into his room to ask him what the hell he thought he was doing. Not convinced she was ignorant to the pounding on the wall he belted the wall with one good thump as he smiled ornerily at his ill-tempered sister. Immediately, there was a return of about 6-7 thumps. Eyes widened, Tammy poked her head into her room next door and saw that it was vacant. She then ran back into Tim's room and jumped into bed with him as they shivered under-neath the covers holding each other with their white-knuckled grips. The pounding continued until their father came in to inquire of the noises. He stated to me that he heard a couple of thumps while he was in the room before they ceased. One evening they were asked by their mother to run the trash out to the trash pile. It was late October by now and there was a light layer of snow on the ground. As they were walking out to the edge of the yard Tammy who was leading dropped her load and stared ahead in amazement. She pulled Tim closer and he noticed what she was so shocked by. The snow was new, fell that afternoon. Footsteps began to manifest themselves right before there eyes. They dropoped their trash and ran to the house. When they brought their father ,Fred out to see this craziness the only footprints that were there were their own.But the lights in the distant tree-row had returned. No fireflies in October. Not even in Kansas. Tim's mother, whose name I can't remember, had reported things falling from the shelves in the kitchen and food and utensils misplacing themselves or showing up wher they shouldn't be. It came time to remodel the house and when they got to the kitchen they tore out a wall that had a panel behind much like a little door. There they found a payroll box from what was confirmed to be from the civil war. Inside there were a couple of coins that were worth little but of great historical value. After giving the box to the local historical society, the manifestations ceased. Hope you enjoyed. My hair is on end just telling it. Jay J.
