In this special episode, Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) and the Deep Space Nine crew will journey back in time and come face-to-face with Captain James T. Kirk, the legendary crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise and the troublesome Tribbles. "This episode not only represents a first-ever for STAR TREK, but is a real break-through in television special effects," Executive Producer Ira Steven Behr comments. "We will use `Forrest Gump'-type effects to enable cast members from a current series to visit a classic television show, produced 29 years ago, and interact with the characters, creating an entirely new episode." This humorous and spirited tribute to the STAR TREK franchise, entitled "Trials and Tribble-ations," is scheduled to air the week of November 4, 1996. In this episode, Captain Sisko and the Defiant crew are transported back in time by a Klingon thief, Darvin, bent on taking revenge upon Captain Kirk, who exposed him as a spy. Upon reaching the Enterprise, Captain Sisko encounters the fuzzy, cuddly creatures known as "Tribbles," which have achieved cult status among STAR TREK fans. Through an insidious plot using the seemingly harmless Tribbles, Darvin attempts to destroy Kirk and his crew, and Captain Sisko must race against time to prevent the destruction of the original U.S.S. Enterprise. "The Trouble With Tribbles" originally aired on NBC in 1967, during the second season of STAR TREK and is best remembered by fans for its light-hearted humor. Guest stars in this episode included William Campbell and William Schallert, who have both appeared in later incarnations of STAR TREK. The Tribbles were soft, cute animals innocently brought aboard the Enterprise by Lieutenant Uhura. Since Tribbles reproduce at prodigious rates when they eat, the animals quickly multiplied to the point where their offspring nearly overran the U.S.S. Enterprise. Captain Kirk and his crew grow exasperated with these lovable but pesky creatures, until the Tribbles' insatiable appetites help expose a Klingon conspiracy. Since its original air date, "The Trouble With Tribbles" has consistently been chosen by "Trekkers" as one of their favorite episodes in the 30-year history of the franchise. "The concept of interspersing DEEP SPACE NINE cast members with this treasured episode will create a great deal of excitement and buzz among STAR TREK fans," comments Dan Madsen, president of the Official Star Trek Fan Club. "Fans will love the fact that DEEP SPACE NINE is paying homage to STAR TREK by exploring its history." Continuing in the 30-year tradition of STAR TREK, the fifth season of STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE promises heightened intrigue and suspense, feature film-quality special effects and complex character development. The series stars Avery Brooks as Starfleet Captain Benjamin Sisko, Rene Auberjonois as the Chief of Security, Odo; Michael Dorn as Lieutenant Commander Worf, Terry Farrell as Lieutenant Jadzia Dax, the Starfleet Science Officer; Cirroc Lofton as Jake Sisko, son of Captain Sisko; Colm Meaney as Chief Operations Officer Miles O'Brien; Armin Shimerman as the Ferengi, Quark; Alexander Siddig as Dr. Julian Bashir and Nana Visitor as Major Kira Nerys. After four seasons, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE has garnered 4 Emmy Awards, 15 Emmy nominations and won numerous accolades, including the 1996 Screen Actors Guild Award for "Outstanding Portrayal of the American Scene," which it shared with the other STAR TREK series. [Paramount Pictures] On July 25, Paramount confirmed that for the 30th anniversary of Star Trek, DS9 would do a special episode titled "Trials and Tribble-ations." In this show using "Forrest Gump" techniques, Sisko and company will go back in time (and be inserted into) footage from the TOS episode "The Trouble with Ron Moore added on America On-Line that he and Rene Echevarria were writing the teleplay from a story by Ira Behr, Robert Wolfe, and Hans Beimler. The episode will be DS9's sixth show aired in the upcoming season. Ron added that Charlie Brill (the actor who played the Klingon spy Darvin in "Trouble with Tribbles" had been contacted about reprising his role on DS9. Still on AOL, Pocket Books editor John Ordover noted that Diane Carey would be writing a novelization of this episode. However, Star Wars's Millennium Falcon & other SW-related ships are on display. Interesting that the primary ornament this year would be the USS Voyager and not station Deep Space 9 (which would probably make a real cool ornament). Well, not really. :-) But that is the premise of Steven Boyett's new collection, _Treks Not Taken_. Episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation that were not (but *should* have been) written by the likes of Tom Robbins, Anne Rice, Stephen King, Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac, James Joyce, Kurt Vonnegut, and even Dr. Seuss. As official keeper of Steven Boyett's bibliography on the World Wide Web, I've had the opportunity to add excerpts from the stories, and even some illustrations, to the Web pages I maintain. This is very funny stuff: "Moby Trek" -- "The Vampire Leforge" -- "The Crusher in the Rye".... The book itself should be out on the shelves later this month, and I'm certainly looking forward to it (even I only got to read the excerpts, I haven't seen the rest of the book yet). Excerpts from the stories and illustrations in _TREKS NOT TAKEN_ can be found at: http://www.msen.com/~yorick/treks.html or http://ic.net/~yorick/treks.html (The main Steven R. If I can, I'll be making that available on the Web as well. According to David Rossi, when the crew is working to help Cochrane he continually makes excuses like having to go to the washroom, and then running away. 2) Expect cameos by either name actors or actors who have appeared in other Star Trek shows. 3) The Defiant is in the movie.!! Rossi confirmed this rumour when someone asked how Worf will get to the Enterprise, and the next slide showed Worf sitting in the Captain's chair surrounded by dead crew men and damaged consoles. So we now know that the Defiant will be attacked, but Rossi would not confirm or deny that the Defiant is destroyed. 4) Lily Sloane who will be from the past will be diagnosed with some kind of illness and will be transported to the ship and could possibly die. 5) The Borg will gain control of the lower half of the Enterprise while the crew will have the upper half. 6) The Borg are going to blow us away visually apparently, so much so that Rossi said the visuals of the Borg are remaining a mystery for as long as they can keep it so. [trek-info@xcf.berkeley.edu] > * Voyager Infos > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As for Voyager, Rossi had a couple of bits of information that will be interesting to most fans. Rossi had said that like many of the people involved with Star Trek, he felt that Voyager as a show had lost its direction and needed a boost. SO, apparently the Kazon will not be appearing anymore in the show after either the season premiere or a couple of episodes later. He said that this was because the biggest complaint was that Voyager is supposed to be travelling home as fast as possible and yet they keep encountering the Kazon when they should be nearly out of the space by now. The other major tidbits come from Robert Picardo. Now I found that Picardo was rather funny, but also that he tended to drone on for a long time when answering a question. Surpringly he could remember episode names, character names and plots lines perfectly. He was better than most of the fans, which shows a great love for his work. Anyway, the info on Voyager is interesting. According to Picardo: 1) The Doctor will have a story focus on him about the 7th episode called "The Swarm". It will involve the doctor having his memory degrade because he has been in constant use since the ship arrived in the Delta Quadrant when he was only meant as a temporary measure. So he begins to lose his memory of all the crew and his medical expertise. Picardo hinted at the fact that the Doctor will have a major change at the end of this episode. The consensus among the fans was that the Doctor will not regain any of his memory. 2) As for the issue of the name of the Doctor. Picardo says that originally the plan was for Zimmerman since that is what the scripts had written in, but he and Berman or Taylor came to the conclusion that this idea of having no name would be a could plot device. He said that most likely the Doctor will get a name, but he was not sure when. He hinted that since he will probably get to picke the name, Picardo will choose a Fan name as the Doctors. But he also said that there was an equally good chance that the Doctor will never get a name. 3) For November sweeps there will be a Two part episode on Voyager that will i involve the crew going back in time and appearing in Los Angeles in 1996. THis will be the first episode in which the Doctor will actually leave sickbay and go down to the planet. That is all the major information that I can recall, but I know I missed some so please forgive me for that. As Culluh tests the ship's power, Seska activates the Emergency Medical Holographic Program only to have the Doctor report startling facts about her newborn baby. As the trauma begins to degrade his neural system he knows he must take action or he will die. To access and conquer the debilitating memory fragment, he asks Captain Janeway to act as his guide and enter into a mind-meld with him, on "Star Trek: Voyager" airing WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET/PT) on UPN. Amazingly, the mind-meld takes Tuvok and Janeway to the scene of the young Vulcan's first Starfleet duty - on the bridge of the U.S.S. Excelsior with Captain Hikaru Sulu in command. This episode commemorates the 30th anniversary of the hugely popular "Star Trek" franchise and marks the first time a cast member from the classic "Star Trek" series has appeared on "Star Trek: Voyager." The episode also contains references back to the feature film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. While The Doctor and Kes monitor them, Janeway and Tuvok delve deep into the mind-meld. Tuvok attends to duties with his then fellow crew members including Commander Janice Rand, while Janeway is an unseen observer. She learns that Tuvok's first deep space assignment, as a junior science officer aboard the Excelsior, was a disagreeable tour of duty for the young Vulcan and sees how it eventually led to his departure from Starfleet over 50 years ago. Janeway also has a chance to see firsthand what her kindred officer, Captain Sulu, chose to do in the heat of battle with the Klingons, led by Commander Kang ("Deep Space Nine"). Tuvok clashes with Sulu over the Captain's orders to make the bold mission to the Klingon Homeworld to rescue Captain Kirk and Doctor McCoy (Star Trek VI) and Janeway gets to "ride shotgun" with a different breed of Starflet officer. Janeway and Tuvok continue with the mind-meld in hopes that it will yield just which repressed memory is causing such a physical reaction in Tuvok - until something goes wrong and without warning, Sulu and the Excelsior crew can see Janeway. "Star Trek: Voyager" stars Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway, Robert Beltran as Chakotay, Roxann Biggs-Dawson as B'Elanna Torres, Jennifer Lien as Kes, Robert Duncan McNeill as Lt. Tom Paris, Ethan Phillips as Neelix, Robert Picardo as The Doctor, Tim Russ as Tuvok, Garrett Wang as Harry Kim. Guest starring are Grace Lee Whitney as Commander Janice Rand, Jeremy Roberts as Valtane, Boris Krutonog as the helmsman, Michael Ansara as Kang and George Takei as Captain Hikaru Sulu.
