General Questions [1]Contents of this section 2.1 Some General Information. This FAQ addresses issues surrounding the Nokia 2110 Family of Digital Mobile Phones. This currently includes the 2110, 2110i and 2110e. It includes practical questions, background information and lists of net resources. 2.2 What does this FAQ cover? This FAQ covers just about everything to do with the Nokia 2110 family of Digital Phones. 2.3 Where can I get the latest copy of this FAQ? The homepage and best place to get the most up to date version of the FAQ is : o [2]http://yallara.cs.rmit.edu.au/~rwi/nokia.html o You can also get it by sending e-mail to rwi@yallara.cs.rmit.edu.au and sending a message with "NOKIA FAQ text" in the Subject line. The body of the message will be ignored. You can replace "text" with "PostScript" or "html" if you want something more fancy than plain text. Anything else will probably break the mail server and cause it to send you an uuencoded coredump :-) ** NOW ONLINE!! ** Sorry about the wait to all you people who have sent me e-mail requests for the FAQ. I have kept your e-mail addresses and I will be sending it out to you over the next few days. If you have problem with the mail server please don't just reply to the sent back mail as the mail server will take it as another request for the FAQ and send you another uuencoded coredump... :) The text and postscript versions of the FAQ sent out via the mail server are automatically generated from my web page every night at midnight. So at most the e-mail version are less than 24 hours old. o This FAQ is also posted monthly on the 13th (my Birthday..*grin*) to the following Newsgroups : alt.cellular.gsm alt.cellular-phone-tech aus.comms Don't forget the most up to date version will ALWAYS be on the web page! _________________________________________________________________ 3. Product Information [1]Contents of this section 3.1 What is a Nokia 2110? The Nokia 2110i/2110e is a Digital (GSM) Mobile phone that has just about all the features you could want. This section will expanded later. 3.2 What is the difference between the 2110/2110e/2110i? This section will expand once I get some more information on the original 2110 as I personally have a 2110e (The Australian Version of the 2110i). The Original 2110 has a little round stubb antenna, where as the 2110e/2110i has a 1 inch/ 2.5 cm stubb antenna that pokes out from the top of the case where the antenna pulls out from. The 2110e is the Austrlian version of the 2110i. It was modified (I'm not sure what excatualy was changed) to meet Australian regulations from AUSTEL. The Major difference in looks for the 2110e is that the Up/Down arrows have been moved from the middle of the phone to the right hand side, the menu selections keys have been slightly enlarged and the front of the phones has been given a more flush look and feel. As for technically different. This FAQ also covers the different types of Digital Phones in the 2110 Range. This includes : o 2110 (GSM) o 2120 (TDMA) o 2146 (PCN) o 2160 (Dual mode, AMPS/TDMA) o 2190 (PCS) Here's a facts sheet on some of the differences between the original 2110 and the New 2110i/2110e FEATURES 2110i and 2110e Original 2110 ======================= ======================= ========================== talk time min 65/90/180/240 55/70/150/180 stand-by time h 17/24/48/65 16/20/40/50 standard battery 550 mAh 400 mAh antenna newly designed alarm modes beeps, vibra optional beeps PC connection PCMCIA/RS232C/infrared PCMCIA/RS232C service menu selectable full/ partial always shown in full SMS incoming alert selectable beep volume silent beep answer with any key selectable on/off always active timer/remainder mode yes no phonebook number editor edits any digit only last digit editable call diversion display shown as text shown as **.*.*.# NETWORK DEPENDENT FEATURES SIM number transmission all number types only talk number transmitted SIM number transmission blockable from handset bloackable from exchange area code blocking selectable area codes A5/2 algorithm yes connected number displ. yes user group mode yes conference call yes special SMS ready yes SMS replacement yes Both new handsets are "GSM Phase 2" ready. Below is a picture of an original 2110 [INLINE] Below is a picture of a 2110i [INLINE] If you want some technical information go to Nokia's web site [2]http://www.nokia.com/ 3.3 What is the latest Software Version? From the reports I have had. The latest software version for the 2110e/2110 is : V 5.48 25-4-96 The latest software version for the original 2110 is : V m4.94 04-01-96 The latest software version for the 2140, also known as the Nokia Orange, also known as the E-plus in Germany is : V m4.92 01-06-95 3.4 How do I upgrade my Software Version? This is something that MUST be done by your phone supplier (or their service centre) or a Nokia service centre. My Advice is to ring Nokia in your Country to find out the nearest Nokia Service Centre near you. The Nokia Service Centre's (in my experience) usually give you better service and a quicker turn-a-round time than other places. _________________________________________________________________ 4. Codes Codes Codes [1]Contents of this section 4.1 How do I find out what software I have? For all the following information you need to have your phone switched on, enter your PIN if needed and your keyguard de-activated. If you have an Original 2110 not a 2110i/2110e (See section 3.2 if your not sure which you have) Enter : _*#9999#_ If you have a 2110i or 2110e Enter : _*#170602112302#_ If neither of these work you might have version 5.48 or greater as for this version the code to get the software version has changed (again). It is now Enter : _*#682371158412125#_ Press (C) when you are finished. 4.2 What does the software version displayed mean? The first line states the software version number. Eg. V 5.11 The second line is the date of the software version Eg. 27-09-95 The third line is the type of phone the software is for Eg NHE-4 4.3 What does NHE-1XN/NHE-4 mean? As far as I can tell : NHE-1XN Is for the original 2110 and NHE-4 Is for the 2110i/2110e and NHK-1XA Is for the 2140/Nokia Orange/ E-plus in Germany 4.4 How can I find out my IMEI? Firstly I better start by telling you what an IMEI is. It's the Electronic Serial Number used in Digital Phones. IMEI standards for "International Mobile Equipment Identity". It's the Digital eqivelent to the ESN (Electronic Serial Number) for analog phones. So the stories you have heard about getting a new SIM for a digital phone and then it becomes basically a new phone is not quite true. It is up to the network provider to use the IMEI's. Some do, some don't. It is in the GSM specifications that you "should" be able to find out the IMEI on any GSM phone by doing : Enter : _*#06#_ Press (C) when you are finished. This will display the IMEI. When I say should work, I know that it will work on Nokia's, Ericssons. I also know that it will NOT work on Motorola Flares. If you have a phone (Except a Nokia), try this code and e-mail what happeneds. 4.5 How can I find out when my phone was manufactured? To find out when your Nokia 2110e/2110i was manufactured, This will NOT work on the original 2110. I don't know of any eqivalent code for it. Enter : _*#3283#_ (3283 = DATE) To understand the four digits the phone returns you first have to look at the last 2 digits. That is the year the phone was manufactured. _1995 "95"_ phones. The Manufacture date was in the format of MMYY MM = Month Number Eg 06 for June YY = Short Year Eg 95 for 1995 _1996 "96"_ phones. The Manufacture date was in the format of WWYY WW = The week of the year number YY = Short Year Eg 96 for 1996 Therefor 1096 would mean the 10th week of 1996, someday between March 3 and 9 inclusive. 4.6 Some 2110 Hidden Shortcuts! Enter : * then Memory then Find or * then the down arrow Result : You see your received calls. Same As menu options (01 2) Enter : + then Memory then Find or + then the down arrow Result : You see your missed calls. Same as menu option (01 3) Pressing Menu then Green Phonebutton allows you to transmitt DTMF codes. Use # instead of the "OK" key when you enter your pin code. _________________________________________________________________ 5. Hardware Information [1]Contents of this section 5.1 What are the pin outs at the bottom of the phone? Please forgive the poor diagram. This diagram has be drawn as if you are looking at the bottom of the phone with the keypad to the top. ( o ) = Charging Connector ( ) = A spacing hole | = Battery Terminal (O) = Antenna Connection I = Pin Block. The Pins are numbered as shown 1 8 ( o ) ( ) | I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I (O) | 9 16 The connector uses the X100 protocol. This a complex protocol. It's is NOT just a matter of connecting some pins and that's it. If you have a copy of the X100 protocol please e-mail it to me so all to enjoy. Description of X100 PIN Name Description --- ---- ----------- 1,9 GND Digital ground 2 MIC/JCONN External audio input from accessories or handsfree microphone. Multiplexed with junction box connection control signal 3 AGND Analogue ground for accessories 4 TDA Transmitted DBUS data to the accessories 5 M2BUS Serial Bidirectional data and control between the handportable and accessories 6 HOOK/RXD2 Hook indication. HP has a 100KE pull-up resistor. 7 PHFS/TXD2 Handsfree device power on/off, data to flash programming device. 8,16 VCHAR Battery charging voltage 10 EAR/HFPWR External Audio output to accessories or handsfree speaker 11 DSYNC DBUS data bit sync clock 12 RDA DBUS recieved data from the accessories 13 BENA Power supply to headset adapter 14 VF Programming voltage for FLASH 15 DCLK DBUS data clock As you can imagine. YOU CAN DESTROY YOUR NOKIA BY FOOLING AROUND WITH THESE CONNECTIONS. Therefor I accept NO responsability for any possible damages. My advice to you is to think twice before doing something and if you are going to try make use of a car-kit holder to get access to the X100 connector since it is to tiny to use a self-fashioned connector. IT IS POSSIBLE TO REPROGRAM THE NOKIA 2110 as is indicated by the pinout description so watch it ! Sourced from Hans Engelen . Thanks Hans! 5.2 How can I make a charger for the 2110? I'll leave it up the reader to make it. But the important charging current needed is below _NOTE!! I take no responsibility for this information!! _ The Nokia mains powered charger delivers 12Vdc current limited to 770mA or to 0.77A - yes zero point seven seven. End of charge detection is done by the phone itself. Note that connecting 12Vdc without current limiting to the phone is likely to damage either or both the phone and the battery. Sometimes the phone will display "not charging", other times the switching transistor inside the phone will die. NOTE: As of the Nokia 1610 the charger has CHANGED! The charger now supplies 10Vdc at 740mA 5.3 Wiring Diagrams for the Nokia Car Kit!! I'm sorry for the size of these but if I re-size them you won't be able to read the text. [INLINE] [INLINE] _________________________________________________________________ 6. Other Information [1]Contents of this section 6.1 Why does my 2110 reset itself? The symptoms are the phone will turn itself off then on again, just as if you have turned it on yourself. Accept for the fact that it doesn't ask for the PIN code. NEW INFO : I have recently upgraded the software in my phone to V5.48. According to Nokia Australia, the 5.48 upgrades fixes the "Mad Nokia Disease" (As I call it). It also fixes some data problems and also has new improved echo cancelation. So with any luck the Mad Nokia Disease has been fixed. Without killing all the Nokia's.. :) 6.2 Cell Broadcast on 2110? Cell Broadcast is where the network can broadcast information to all the mobiles in the area. Sometimes it's used to Broadcast the Cell ID information. It can be turned on via the menu option CELL INFO DISPLAY (option 49) The 2110 family can only receive Cell broadcast inforamtion on channel 50. Unfortunately not all Networks transmit this information on channel 50. What's worse is that unlike some other phones, namely some Motorola's, the Nokia cannot select what channel it listens too. I'm hoping Nokia will release a software upgrade to allow selection of the channel. I still cannot get an answer from Nokia Australia as to what will be done about this. I hope to have an answer soon. In the mean time if anyone hears from their local Nokia office, please let me know. 6.3 How do I change the diversion delay? This is really a network action rather than the phone, but I feel Nokia should have had the facility in the diversion menu to be able to change the delay on Divert On No Answer. You have to type this at the keypad for it to work. Enter : **61*(desired number)*(diversion type)*(diversion delay)# Desired Number : The number that it will divert to. Diversion Type : This is the service that will be divered. See table. Diversion Delay : A delay between 10 and 30 seconds the network will ring the phone untill it diverts. Diversion Code Service -------------------------------------------------------- 10 Divert All Tele-Services 11 Divert Voice 12 Divert Data 13 Divert Fax 14 Divert Datex-J (What's this??) 16 Divert SMS (Short Message Service) 18 Divert All Data Services Except SMS 19 Divert All Data Services Except SMS 20 Divert All Services (Everything! Data/Voice/SMS etc) 21 Divert All Asynchronus Services 22 Divert All Synchronus Services 23 Divert 3.1kHz Mobiltel. Services 24 Divert Synchronus Point-to-Point Connections including PADs 25 Divert Asynchronus Point-to-Point Connections including PADs 26 DivertDataPacket including PADs 27 Divert Services with PAD-Participation 29 Divert Digital Transmission with 128kps NOTE : Not all servies are available from all Phone Companies Eg: If you want to divert voice calls to the number 555-6666 after 20 second waiting for the call to be answered, you enter : **61*5556666*11*20# For further information contact your Network Provider. 6.4 How do I change the "KEYGUARD ACTIVE" text? (sort of) If you are using the "Welcome Note" you can have it shown instead of the "KEYGUAGE ACTIVE" message. Heres how you do it : 1) Set a Welecome Message. See your Nokia Manual for the steps. Menu Option (9 1) 2) Turn the Phone off then On again. (Enter PIN If required) but do NOT "KEEP" or "ERASE" the welcome note. 3) When the message is shown press a number (0-9). 4) Press the "C" button. 5) Activate the keyguard by pressing MENU then * before the "KEEP"/ "ERASE" message is displayed again. Now your message is shown instead of the ordinary keyguard message. It's a messy workaround and does realy change the text but it works. _________________________________________________________________ 7.
