logicg11.zip Problems In Logic (Shareware Version) Problems In Logic is a program designed to exercise the problem solving abilities of students in grades 5 and up. In order to successfully complete these problems, the student must use analytic and fact comparison skills. They are challenged to solve a puzzle using only a few clues provided. In order to arrive at the correct answer, they must constantly cross reference the clues and compare them with data they gather as they proceed. The program gives them five chances to solve the puzzle before giving the correct answer. The top ten scores (points are awarded based on how many attempts it takes for a student to complete a puzzle) are saved in a "Hall of Fame" and each student's progress is tracked so they can do some problems one day and come back another to pick up where they left off. This program may be run from diskette or copied to a hard disk. This program is a demonstration version of the registered programs Problems In Logic Volumes 1 & 2. It works exactly like the full versions with the exception that it only has 4 example problems (2 from Volume 1 and 2 from Volume 2.) Special Requirements: Color display Shareware. Uploaded by the author. William Jimerson WJimer6887@aol.com You start the program by entering LOGICG11 at the DOS prompt. The first step in using the program is to enter your name. The program keeps track of every name, which problems have been completed by that person, and their total score to date. This way a student need not complete all of the problems in one sitting. They can do some one day and come back another to pick up where they left off. Note: when a name is entered, the program scans for it. If a match is found, you will be asked to confirm that this is the right name. If a new student enters a name which is already in the list, they will have to choose another, more distinctive, name. For example, if there are two students named Mike, Mike Doe and Mike Stevens, they could not both enter Mike as their name. One might enter MikeD and the other MikeS. After a name has been entered the program looks to see which problems have been completed and then loads the next problem for the student to complete. A student new to the program begins at problem #1. The problem screen has a brief description of the puzzle to solve and lists the clues necessary to solve it. The bottom portion of the screen is the chart used to enter clue data and, eventually, solve the puzzle. Example (problem #1 - In the program, each section of the chart is a different color): ============================================================================== Five couples went to the multiplex to watch movies. Each couple saw a different movie. Use the clues to determine who the couples were and which movie each couple saw. 1. June likes comedies but Tim does not. 2. Marcia didn't go with Scott or Tim and didn't see the love story Susan saw. 3. Gladys and Dave have been going together for a long time. 4. Sandy and Gladys only watch sci-fi or actions films, Tim never does. 5. Dave watched an action film this time and Scott tagged along with Sandy. 6. Henry ended up laughing until his ribs hurt. Dave Fred Scott Henry Tim SF Action Comedy Love Drama Sandy _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Susan _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Gladys _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ June _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Marcia _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ SF _ _ _ _ _ Action _ _ _ _ _ Comedy _ _ _ _ _ Love _ _ _ _ _ Drama _ _ _ _ _ Problem #1 Your total score so far is 0 Number of tries - 0 ============================================================================== The student enters an X in a place on the chart where the clues given could not exist, and an O where the facts confirm that place. The cursor keys control where the highlighted entry cell is. Pressing the X key places an X, pressing the O key places and O, and pressing the spacebar clears the cell. Enter submits the problem to determine if it is right or not (a student has 5 attempts to solve each problem before the answer is given.) ESC will leave the problem and return to the sign in screen. Note: Students do not get credit for incomplete problems. If they leave a problem in the middle, they will have to start that problem over when they sign in the next time. In the example, clue 1 tells us that June watched a comedy and obviously did not go with Tim so we can place an X under all movies except Comedy (where we put an O) across from June. We can also put an X under Tim across from Comedy and since he did not go with June, we can put an X under Tim across from June. Also, since we know June saw the Comedy, none of the other women could have so we can X out Comedy for all other women. Now our screen looks like (Note: only the chart portion is shown here): ============================================================================== Dave Fred Scott Henry Tim SF Action Comedy Love Drama Sandy _ _ _ _ _ _ _ X _ _ Susan _ _ _ _ _ _ _ X _ _ Gladys _ _ _ _ _ _ _ X _ _ June _ _ _ _ X X X O X X Marcia _ _ _ _ _ _ _ X _ _ SF _ _ _ _ _ Action _ _ _ _ _ Comedy _ _ _ _ X Love _ _ _ _ _ Drama _ _ _ _ _ Problem #1 Your total score so far is 0 Number of tries - 0 ============================================================================== Clue 2 tells us Marcia didn't go with Scott or Tim (X both of them out across from Marcia) and she didn't see the Love story (X it out across from Marcia) but Susan did see it (put an O across from Susan under Love and an X under all other movies across from Susan, also X out Love for all the other women.) ============================================================================== Dave Fred Scott Henry Tim SF Action Comedy Love Drama Sandy _ _ _ _ _ _ _ X X _ Susan _ _ _ _ _ X X X O X Gladys _ _ _ _ _ _ _ X X _ June _ _ _ _ X X X O X X Marcia _ _ X _ X _ _ X X _ SF _ _ _ _ _ Action _ _ _ _ _ Comedy _ _ _ _ X Love _ _ _ _ _ Drama _ _ _ _ _ Problem #1 Your total score so far is 0 Number of tries - 0 ============================================================================== Clue #3 is a given; Gladys and Dave went together (put an O across from Gladys under Dave and an X under all other men. X out all other women under Dave. And, since we know Gladys didn't watch the Comedy or Love story, Dave didn't either. ============================================================================== Dave Fred Scott Henry Tim SF Action Comedy Love Drama Sandy X _ _ _ _ _ _ X X _ Susan X _ _ _ _ X X X O X Gladys O X X X X _ _ X X _ June X _ _ _ X X X O X X Marcia X _ X _ X _ _ X X _ SF _ _ _ _ _ Action _ _ _ _ _ Comedy X _ _ _ X Love X _ _ _ _ Drama _ _ _ _ _ Problem #1 Your total score so far is 0 Number of tries - 0 ============================================================================== Clue #4 tells us that the SF and Action films were seen by Sandy and Gladys so we can X out any other movie type across from them. Once we do, notice that the only person left to have seen the Drama is Marcia; put an O there and an X for the other movie types across from Marcia. Also, #4 says Tim doesn't watch those types, so he didn't go with either Sandy or Gladys, which only leaves Susan. We can X out SF and Action under Tim, and put an O under Tim across from Susan and X out all other men across from Susan. Since we already know Susan saw the Love story, so did Tim; put an O under Tim across from Love and X out all other movies under Tim. Also we can now X out Love for all the other men. ============================================================================== Dave Fred Scott Henry Tim SF Action Comedy Love Drama Sandy X _ _ _ X _ _ X X X Susan X X X X O X X X O X Gladys O X X X X _ _ X X X June X _ _ _ X X X O X X Marcia X _ X _ X X X X X O SF _ _ _ _ X Action _ _ _ _ X Comedy X _ _ _ X Love X X X X O Drama _ _ _ _ X Problem #1 Your total score so far is 0 Number of tries - 0 ============================================================================== Continue using the clues (you might have to go back and forth among them as you gather more data - using a clue once is not always good enough) to fill in the rest of the chart. The answer for this problem is ============================================================================== Dave Fred Scott Henry Tim SF Action Comedy Love Drama Sandy X X O X X O X X X X Susan X X X X O X X X O X Gladys O X X X X X O X X X June X X X O X X X O X X Marcia X O X X X X X X X O SF X X O X X Action O X X X X Comedy X X X O X Love X X X X O Drama X O X X X Problem #1 Your total score so far is 0 Number of tries - 0 ============================================================================== Press ENTER and the program will look at your answer and check if it is right. If it is, you will be given a congratulations message and awarded points (based on how many tries you had to make.) If the answer is wrong, you will be given a message to that effect and left at the puzzle screen to check your answer. After the fourth incorrect attempt, the "Number of tries" message will begin to flash, telling you that there is only one try left. After the fifth incorrect try the answer is displayed and you get no points. If you have not completed all of the problems, you will be asked if you want to do another. If you have completed all of the problems, your total score will be compared to the top ten list and if your score is higher than one or more on that list, your name will be entered in the "Hall of Fame" for others to try to beat. The correct answers are: #1 Sandy ---- Scott ---- SF #2 Johnson --- Tuna ---- Minnow Susan ---- Tim ------ Love Smith ----- Bass ---- Fly Gladys --- Dave ----- Action Jones ----- Trout --- Lure June ----- Henry ---- Comedy Davis ----- Perch --- Worm Marcia --- Fred ----- Drama Hanks ----- Catfish - Cheese #3 First ---- Virgil --- Cindy #4 Malone ---- January ---- November Second --- Ray ------ Mary Plunk ----- February --- December Third ---- Lester --- Peggy Gardner --- March ------ September Fourth --- Earl ----- Betty Phelps ---- April ------ August Fifth ---- Leroy ---- Sally Lopez ----- May -------- October
