The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at just over seven thousand, up 56 points. For the week, the industrial average gained 123 points. The broader and more representative Standard and Poor's 500 index closed Friday at 804, up six points. Traders were generally pleased with the latest U.S. employment statistics. Although the number of new jobs created in February was above Wall Street expectations, analysts say many of those jobs were in the construction industry where hiring was spurred by warm weather in much of the country. The analysts say they do not believe the employment rise will create inflationary pressures. The U.S. unemployment rate fell one tenth of one per cent to five point three per cent in February, helped by a mild-weather burst of activity at construction firms and continued growth in the service sector. 339-thousand new jobs were created, much higher than expected. Job growth in February was the largest in nine months and at least 100 thousand higher than many economists anticipated. It was led by a 109 thousand gain at construction firms, following a scant 15 thousand rise in January. But despite the strong job growth, average hourly earnings, a key gauge of inflationary pressure, rose only two tenths of one per cent. This means that labor costs are being contained despite the job gains. The Federal Reserve will take all of this into account when it meets March 25th to consider the direction of interest rates. Fed chairman Alan Greenspan repeated this week that the central bank is on heightened alert for inflationary pressure that may be creeping into the economy. Rising prices would imperil the six year old business expansion and force the fed to raise rates, and that could send the bulls on Wall Street running for cover. The ITT corporation will sell its one-half ownership of New York City's famous Madison Square Garden sports arena and the professional basketball and hockey teams which are part of the business. Analysts say the move was another effort by ITT to increase shareholder value and discourage an unwelcome takeover bid by the Hilton Hotels company. A jury has found U.S. Airways was responsible for a 1994 crash in the state of North Carolina in which 37 people were killed. The jury decided the airplane's pilot exercised poor judgment by attempting to land in a violent thunderstorm. However, the jury also decided there was no deliberate negligence in the case, meaning U.S. Airways will not have to pay punitive damages. A New York businessman was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for running what prosecutors called the largest pyramid scheme in U.S. history. Steven Hoffenberg stole almost 500 million dollars from investors who had purchased high-yield bonds from his company. In a pyramid scheme, money from new investors is used to pay previous investors. Eventually though, there are not enough new investors to cover previous obligations. Share prices were mixed in trading Friday on European markets. Stock prices rose sharply to once again set new record closing highs in London and Paris. Analysts say traders were encouraged by economic news in the United States. Prices in London, Europe's biggest market, set a new high for the fourth straight day. The FTSE-100 index closed up 21 points. Prices in Paris also finished at a new high. The CAC-40 index was up more than nine points. Stock prices dropped only in Frankfurt where the market closed before the U.S. employment report was issued. The DAX-30 index ended down more than 41 points. But prices rose in later computerized trading. On the London currency exchange, the U.S. dollar rose in value against the German mark, the Japanese yen, and the British pound. **********NEWS BRIEFS********* INDUSTRY NEWS Odyssey Ventures, a San Francisco, California, research firm recently released a study showing that "fewer than one-third of home personal computer sales in the U.S. Are going to first-time buyers." First time buyers once accounted for half of PC sales. The Wall Street Journal says that the finding is an indication that the "manufacturers' aggressive push to put a computer in Every American home may be faltering." Nick Donatiello, Odyssey's president, says that producers and retailers "can't take growth in PC penetration for granted anymore." Mr. Donatiello adds that for the computer to reach the mass market, "the PC needs a new identity. It needs to migrate from being a productivity tool to an entertainment device in the minds of consumers." This week, the World Trade Organization said that countries representing more than 90 percent of the $600 billion information technology industry, have agreed to remove tariffs "on computer monitors, chips and other products by (the year) 2000." The New York Times reports that the United States, the European Union, Japan and more than a dozen other countries agreed in December in Singapore to remove tariffs on a number of high-tech products by the year 2000. They set a March 15 deadline to enlist other nations, "and that process is now largely complete". Among those joining the effort is Malaysia. The Times says that "Malaysia's participation in the information technology agreement is especially important, that nation accounts for about 5 percent of the global industry." The first stage of the tariff cutting agreement is scheduled to take place on July 1. According to software experts in Latin America, a reduction of the illegal copying of computer programs in the region could lead to a tremendous growth for the region's software industry. A study conducted by Price Waterhouse on behalf of the business software alliance, says that "the average piracy rate in Latin America is over 80 percent, "meaning that for every four software products used three have been illegally acquired." Price Waterhouse officials also say that the development of a local software industry would be important in order for countries in the region to achieve international competitiveness. In order to promote the industry, "governments should guarantee compliance with intellectual property laws and copyrights." Computer chips are now an essential part of automobiles. The USA Today newspaper says that "today's car has more computer power than the Apollo 11 spacecraft Neil Armstrong flew to the moon in 1969." The chips can control everything from fuel injection to tire pressure and they have made servicing the vehicles a highly skilled craft. The use of high-technology means that mechanics "must continuously school themselves on the latest technology." Chris Christner, a vice president at Universal Technical Institute, says that highly skilled mechanics, in the United States, "can earn $70,000 to $80,000 a year after three or four years on the job." Some companies, like BMW, Ford and Volkswagon, "are tapping technical schools to find top graduates, then providing six months additional training on the automaker's vehicles." Japan's NEC and Toshiba have announced that they have raised prices for 16 megabit DRAM chips 5 to 10 percent. NEC says that the price hike is due to a rise in the spot market, result from Korean chip makers reducing production. AAPL APPLE COMPUTER INC. Apple has announced that it will decide in the coming weeks whether or not to increase licensing fees charged to making of Macintosh clones. Same analysts believe that this move would prove too costly for some clone makers. Apple Computer may be having financial problems, but manufacturers of machines using the company's operating system seem to be doing well. An article in the Los Angeles Times notes that "the clone makers take credit for keeping the Macintosh alive while its parent is pre-occupied with executive shake-ups, impending layoffs and the biggest product transition in its history." For example, Motorola, one company that manufacturers copies of the MAC "has sold about 50,000 computers in less than four months. According to an E-mail message sent to Apple employees from Apple chairman Gilbert Amelio, plans for restructuring and job layoffs will be announced on March 14th. It is expected that at least 4,000 employees will be laid off. The research firm Computer Intelligence has released a report stating that sales of Macintosh computers and their clones to businesses rose from a business PC market share of 9.5 percent in December to 11.2 per cent in December. November market share was 7.8 percent. The increase is contributed to a rise in sales of MAC clones. The sales of a clone produce less revenue for Apple, than the sale of an Apple MAC.
