BESTWIND.TXT Copyright (c) by Timo Salmi 1991-1997 Wed 12-February-1997 Timo's subjective choice of best PD, FW & SW Windows 3.x material ----------------------------------------------------------------- There is a huge number of very worthwhile shareware and other material that is not on this list. Please note that this list is subjective reflecting my own, special usages. Hence one cannot "submit" to this list, as some users and authors have done after this list has become fairly widespread. Comments and views are naturally welcome, nevertheless. You are free to quote brief passages from my text provided you clearly indicate the source with an acknowledgment. It can also be used to process the images. CompuShow can make transparent colors, alter the number of colors, and display and embed text comments into gif files. ewan1052.zip To make a terminal connection with a modem one can use a suitable telnet client program. I use this excellent, free program from Peter Zander from Sweden. The only clear drawback I have noticed is that the scrollback feature can confuse the terminal settings and make reconnecting necessary at worst. Requires Winsock or some other connection program. g16e301.exe We are living in an era of science fiction coming true. It is hardly on exaggeration to say that the World Wide Web and the Netscape viewer are making an unprecedented change in global communication. At this very moment they are a part in Alvin Toffler's visions of the global village becoming everyday reality. - Despite the keen competition from Microsoft, Netscape Navigator is at the very least at par or has the edge in all major features and usability over its mighty rival. - I have listed here the Gold version 3.01 of Netscape which includes in some respects an unfinished home page editor. Netscape is a complicated product and occasionally experiences stability problems and strange crashes, but less than in the earlier versions. lviewp1b.zip Image file editor for Microsoft Windows 3.1 by Leonardo Loureiro. This is not a drawing program but an image processing program. Among other things it can be used to convert image formats. It also has the useful ability to display multiple images as a slide show. nsi11.zip NeoSoft's Icon Editor. A nifty drawing program with a fairly complete set of tools for preparing Windows 32x32 pixel icons. nsv11a.zip NeoSoft Viewer. This is a very good file and content search tool for locating material on one's harddisk. You can locate files, file contents and view the files in ascii and in hex. ntspad16.zip The problem with Windows' own notepad utility is that it cannot handle very large or multiple files. This has given a rise to several good notepad replacements. Among these my preference has become Notespad, a very nice freeware program from Bremer Corporation. Another one which I'll mention, though, is notebk24.zip CT Software. There is one snag which is common to the original notepad and all the replacements I have looked at so far. Notespad cannot handle MS-DOS upper ascii. For a Finn often needing letters like „ and ” this is a major drawback. Hence I occasionally have to use Microsoft Word for simple ascii text file processing. psp311.zip Paint Shop Pro image authoring, JASC Inc. snagit32.zip SnagIt from Chris Wheeler and TechSmith Corporation. This useful Windows utility captures the screen or portions thereof to a file or directly to the printer. winsock.zip Trumpet Winsock from Australia. A necessity, at least for me, for making the Windows connection from my home PC to the office main frame. Nice automated dialing and other scripting from Peter R. Tattam & Trumpet Software International. ws_ftple.zip FTP file transfer client, limited license version for universities, J.Junod. This is a robust FTP transfer program for the Windows environment. Requires Winsock or some other connection program. Shows a sense of humor in the selection of the event sounds. wz16v62.exe WinZip for Win 3.1 w/Built-in ZIP, TAR, gzip, compress. The versatile achiever shell for Windows 3.1. Does in the Windows environment many things that Shez does on the MS-DOS side. An absolute necessity for a Windows FTP site user to view the material downloaded. Why are there so relatively few Windows 3.x programs on this somewhat skewed list? Because the accessories that already belong with Windows 3.11, the fully commercial Microsoft Office Suite and the MS-DOS programs listed in the MS-DOS part take well care of what I currently need on my PC. Not surprisingly many of the programs I have chosen are image related, since graphics and image processing is why I started using Windows 3.11 in addition to MS-DOS. ....................................................................
