The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 6740, down 140 points, or more than two percent. The broader and more representative Standard and Poor's 500 index closed at 773, down 16 points. Stock and bond prices fell together. Analysts say stronger-than-expected economic data convinced many traders that inflationary pressures are building in the U.S. economy. Many now believe that Tuesday's quarter-percent interest rate increase by the U.S. central bank will not be the last. In addition, analysts say many traders wanted to reduce their stock exposure in advance of the three-day (Easter) holiday. U.S. financial markets are closed in observance of good Friday. There were two signs of a strong job market in the United States. The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits dropped last week. And a monthly survey of "help wanted" advertising was up in February. Thursday it was reported that sales of existing homes in the United States soared last month to their second-highest level in history. But Friday, the government reported new home sales last month were down slightly and that consumer spending in the last quarter of 1996 was not as strong as originally thought. There is a California report (San Jose Mercury News) that Larry Ellison, the chairman of the Oracle computer software company, is considering a one-billion-dollar bid for control of the Apple computer company. However, there has been no official confirmation of the story. Share prices were mixed in trading Thursday in major European markets. European stocks continued their upward trend, with gains posted in all three major markets, although all three closed well below their highs for the day. In London, stocks were up for the third day. The FTSE-100 index rose 11 points, about three-tenths percent. In Paris, the CAC-40 index rose almost eight points, also three-tenths percent. And, in Frankfurt, the DAX-30 index finished the floor trading day up almost 11 points, a rise of three-tenths percent. But prices in Frankfurt fell back sharply in later computerized trading. On the London currency exchange, the U.S. dollar dropped in value against the German mark, the Japanese yen, and the British pound. This was the last day of trading in Europe before the long easter holiday weekend. European trading resumes on Tuesday. **********NEWS BRIEFS********* INDUSTRY NEWS Matt Sargent, an analyst with Computer Intelligence, says that purchases of PCs made by corporations were strong in February.
