The Seagate Technical Support Desk Reference system allows you to instantly look up disc drive specs and jumper settings for ALL Seagate drives (even models that are no longer in production). It also contains information on Seagate controllers, technical terminology, industry phone numbers and much more! The Seagate Technical Support Desk Reference is built as a Windows Help File with the .HLP extension. Windows recognizes data files of this type and will auto launch the WINHELP.EXE utility that accompanies every Windows installation. ================================================================================= To set up and run the Seagate Desk Reference, follow the steps outlined below: 1) Copy the file STDR9704 to the directory where you would like to store the Seagate Desk Reference files. 2) From a DOS prompt, or using the File/Run command, run the program STDR9704.EXE (a self-extracting PKZip file, or unzip STDR9704.ZIP). After you have unzipped the program, you should have the following files in your directory: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- STDR9704.EXE The self-extracting PKZip file used to distribute the software: (Assy #705719-006) (or STDR9704.ZIP) DESKREF .HLP The Seagate Desk Reference data in Windows Help file format. (#705717-704) DESKREF .ICO Windows Icon file for the Seagate Desk Reference. (#705716-001) LETGOTHL.TTF A TrueType font required to view and print the Desk Reference. DESKREF .TXT This text file that you are reading. (#36320-201 Rev. G) FILE_ID .DIZ A BBS description file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) Install the Letter Gothic Line TrueType font Before you can view the graphics in the Seagate Desk Reference, you must load a special Windows TrueType font called LETGOTHL.TTF. To install the TrueType font: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Start MS-Windows 3.1. 2) Go to the MAIN folder and select CONTROL PANEL. 3) Select FONTS. 4) Select ADD. 5) In the box marked 'Drives' select the drive (C:, D:, or whatever) that contains the file LETGOTHL.TTF. 6) Select the directory where the file is stored. 7) The font names will appear in the section marked 'List of Fonts'. 8) Click on the font you want to install (using the mouse). 9) Click on 'OK'. This font will be available to all your Windows applications. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) Start the Seagate Technical Support Desk Reference The Seagate Technical Support Desk Reference (DESKREF.HLP) is a Windows Help File. To view this file, all you have to do is open the Windows File Manager and double click on the file name. If you want this file to show up as an icon on your desktop, use the Program Manager option File/New to create a new program item. Then choose "Browse..." to find and select the DESKREF.HLP file. Finally, select "Change Icon" and choose "Browse..." to find and select the DESKREF.ICO file. ======================================================================= The Seagate Technology Technical Support Desk Reference will be updated with information on new drives, more troubleshooting, and appropriate miscellaneous material.
