******************************* * * * User's Manual Supplement * * * * CMFiler -- Version 6.06 * * * ******************************* The printed user's manual being sent to registered users as of the date of this file is current to Version 6.00. Any registered users who wish to receive a copy of this latest printed manual may order by sending $5 to NoVaSoft. This essentially covers our printing and mailing costs. The following features have been added or improved since the printing of the CMFiler Version 6.00 user's manual: "QUICK-STARTING" AN ASSOCIATED FILE in Windows 95: For PCs running under Windows 95, if an association exists between a file extension and an application, you can start the application and operate on that file just by putting the cursor on the filename and pressing Q. For example, Windows 95 associates .WAV files with its audio WAV file player. To start the WAV file player, and have it load a particular .WAV file, say TADA.WAV, just put the cursor on the filename TADA.WAV and press Q. FILE COMPARE: Version 6.04 has a new file compare facility in the main services module similar to the old DOS program COMP.EXE. Put the cursor on one file to be compared and press Ctrl-R (for compaRe). Navigate to the second file, put the cursor on it and press Ctrl-R again. The bottom of the screen will show the results of the file comparison. ORDERING OF FILES: The file sort routines in the main and tree modules have been dramatically enhanced by use of a presort procedure (courtesy of Jan Hajek), and a rewrite of the main sorter. The option to choose between BubbleSort and QuickSort in the Ctrl-O Order menu has been removed, because the speed of the BubbleSort is now so fast that another option is no longer necessary. In place of this menu item is an option to order the directories alphabetically (the default), or by age, showing newest first. This is handy, for example, for those who frequently make temporary directories for short-term reasons, like software testing, and want to be able to position on them quickly for the duration of the test. ENHANCEMENTS TO FILE EDITOR/VIEWER: The file viewer has been made more seamless when viewing files which are too long to fit into the available conventional memory. When searching for a string, viewer will load and search the next and each subsequent section of the file until the string is found. The file beginning/file end commands (Alt-B/Alt-E) reload the first section, or sequentially load and index each section to the end, instead of only moving to the beginning or end of the currently loaded section. Completion of string searches by Ctrl-G or Alt-F/Alt-X are now better announced. A switch (Ctrl-M) has been added to the file viewer to allow masking non- ASCII characters. This helps in viewing word processing files, such as WordPerfect files, which have non-ASCII characters distributed throughout. The Edit Mode/Type Mode indicator is moved from the upper right to the lower left, to avoid obscuring text. The ASCII pop-up table (Ctrl-A) now initially positions the movable highlight to the character in the table that was at the cursor when Ctrl- A was pressed. Also, the binary value of the character is shown, as well as the decimal and hexadecimal. The action of the mouse has been changed. With movement, the mouse becomes visible if installed, and can be positioned anywhere within the working screen. Clicking the Left Button affixes the cursor to the nearest permissible position in the text area (within line delimiters). Shift-Left pages down one page, Ctrl-Shift-Left pages 20 pages (like Ctrl-PgDn). Alt-Left pages up one page, and Ctrl-Alt-Left pages up 20 (loke Ctrl-PgUp). Both buttons together inserts Esc. SPLITTING FILES IN THE FILE VIEWER: The file viewer can now be used to split a file into up to 20 smaller files, at dividers inserted by the user. Alt-I inserts a divider at the location of the cursor, and Alt-S splits the file at the dividers. The beginning and end of the file have pre-placed, implicit dividers. In order to make the command Alt-S available for "Split file," the command for switching from view to edit mode has been changed from Alt-S to Alt-D (for eDit mode). IMPORTING A FILE IN THE EDITOR: The user may now import another file into the file being edited by placing the cursor on the line just below the desired insertion point, and pressing Alt-T (for imporT). FINDING TEXT IN EDITOR/VIEWER AFTER SEARCH IN TREE MODULE: After a search for a string in the tree module using Shift-F "Findtext" feature, the string is passed to the editor/viewer module if called from the file list next to the tree display. To search in the viewer for the same string, just press Alt-X (neXt). FLOPPY FORMATTING: The user may now specify a volume label to be applied to floppies during a formatting session. PRINTER LINE FEED: A printer line-feed command, Ctrl-i, issues a line- feed carriage return to LPT1 only. LONG FILENAMES FOR COPY-WITH-RENAME: Long filename support is now available to the Alt-R "copy file with Rename" function. FILE VIEWING FROM "EDIT-NOTES" FACILITY: The file viewer is accessible from the edit-Notes (Ctrl-N) facility, with the keystroke Alt-V. This is handy when you are attached descriptions to files, and you want to peek at a text file to confirm it is the file you think. SHIFT-UP/DOWN ARROWS: In the main and editor/viewer modules, the command Shift-Up/Down Arrow holds the relative position of the highlighted line at the same place on the screen, and scrolls the display up or down one line at a time. TREE DISPLAY ENHANCEMENTS: A directory count is now included in the information area at the bottom of the display. When using G or Alt-G to Goto files or directories, the number of hits is displayed as each letter of the test string is typed. At the completion of a Shift-F Find text operation, the number of hits is displayed at the bottom of the screen. GOTO DIRECTORY ENHANCEMENT: The key combination G then \ is equivalent to Alt-G, to avoid having to use the Alt- key. CONFIRMATORY MESSAGES AND DEFAULT VALUES: In all file delete operations, the default value for the confirmatory message is now N (do not delete) instead of Y, to avoid inadvertent file loss. A confirmatory message has been added in the file freshener for the case in which no files were tagged, to confirm that the user wants to tag and freshen all files. MISCELLANEOUS: The Del key works the same as D for deleting files or a directory. The Ins key works like M (Make directory) if the cursor is on a directory, of F (make File) if the cursor is on a file.
