DESCRIPTION-
Having an OS/2 Warp Home Edition is not just a marketing
issue, it involves technical details of the OS/2 Warp 4.0 Client
product itself. The following suggestions are slight mods to
the OS/2 Warp 4.0 Client which, taken cumulatively, could qualif
as a "Home Edition" version of OS/2 Warp. This data is based on
my three years of experience preloading OS/2 Warp for the home
and SOHO markets.
1. Include the Netscape Navigator for OS/2 on the main OS/2 CD
and as an installation option. NOT default, for
significant numbers of home users fear the Net. Include a
pre-configured HTM bookmark file with the Web's best
OS/2-related sights, the popular search engines, and the
type of Web locations in the current Warp 4 Web sites
folder. Pre-configure the bookmark by type of company or
product so that it is neat and orderly.
2. Related to #1, have an IBM Web Site with OS/2 basics and
tutorials and examples how to do such things as: change the
default background image; install a Windows application;
delete some old files using the Shredder - add a new
printer. Place the pointer to this Web site in the most
prominent position in the Bookmarks.
3. Change the default desktop icon set so that DOS Full screen
and Windows Full screen appear as main icons. So many home
users want to load DOS and Windows apps that they should not
have to hunt for these features.
4. Change the default DOS and Windows session properties as
follows:
- WIN RUN MODE to Enhanced 3.1
- DDE ON
- CLIPBOARD ON
- FILES=100
- INT DURING IO ON
- HW TIMER ON
- XGA IO TRAP OFF
- XMS MEMORY to 4098
These settings tend to reflect the needs of the vast
majority of DOS and Windows 3.1 applications available
today, as well as matching the typical hardware
configurations
5. Installation should have two main paths:
LAN or non-LAN installation, to both simplify the
installation as well as make the performance of home
machines a little better.
6. A David Barnes video should be included in every box so that
happy OS/2 users can show their friends how to install the
OS/2 and how to use it.
7. IBM driver developers should go to the LA County Fairgrounds
Computer Fair, held monthly, and buy two of each adapter
card being sold there. OS/2 drivers should be included on
the main CD to automatically detect each of these cards.
These are the mass-produced Chinese models flooding the
market.
8. A list of OS/2 User Groups and contact information should be
in every retail box of OS/2 Warp.
9. Implement the "trapdoor to DOS" feature as a shutdown and
reboot feature. Bootup time is slow and this is the number
one complaint I encounter with home users.
10. Fix the CHKDSK and HPFS so that they are faster. In
particular, allow CHKDSK to run on the booted partition so
that using the boot diskettes is not required. Thanks for
this opportunity to contribute to your list!!
