 DESCRIPTION-

This suggestion will benefit everyone who uses OS/2 with a
PostScript printer. It will improve OS/2's market standing
among users doing graphics and publishing work. It will also
improve the perceived quality of OS/2. Improvement in the
PostScript driver is needed in two areas:

        (1) bug fixes -- these seem to have a low priority and take a
long time. The latest PostScript driver fixed bugs in image
drawing, but introduced a bug that means it doesn't print
        italics correctly for hardware-resident fonts.

        (2) font installation -- there is no way to tell the driver
that fonts are resident in the printer: e.g., in flash ROM, a
printer hard disk, or even printer memory. Thus all fonts that
are not "hard-wired" as resident in the driver are down loaded
for each print job, slowing performance enormously. Overcoming
this limitation would reduce print times markedly and save
        users' time.

It would be nice to have all the possibilities PS driver
offers in a generic PS driver, i.e. resolution 100-3000dpi,
possibility of printing 2 sides per page and so on. The use
of PostScript drivers is not limited to the mere printing.
PostScript files can be used also as an electronic document
archive. Especially in the scientific environment, many
documents are preserved in the PS format, so this improvement
would greatly improve the utility of Warp.

        SUPPLEMENTAL TEXT:

OS/2 drivers are needed for many PostScript drivers.
There are no OS/2 drivers for any of the color copiers I have
seen. Of course IBM can't support all the PostScript devices
available, but what about a PPD based driver as used on Macs
and Windows? All PostScript drivers are supplied with PPDs.
The benefits of an improved driver should be clear.
PostScript printers are used a lot in both offices, schools
and for DTP-work. And color photocopiers are becomming
increasingly popular for office use. If a PPD based driver
was introduced OS/2 could support all PostScript printers/RIPs
        without requiring any aditional work.
