DESCRIPTION-
As many people know, when OS/2 boots up there are actually two
copies of the WPS started. One is what the user actually sees
and user. However, the second is in memory. The second one
monitors the first one to see if any problems occur. If a
serious problem occurs, then the first WPS is shut down and the
second one shows itself and takes over. The problem with this
is that both WPS take a lot of memory. According to Theseus/2,
both WPS can take anywhere from 4-6 Megs of memory! If the
second WPS wasn't started, then this would be free up a lot of
memory and probably make the system a lot faster. I'm not quite
sure how to solve this. The second WPS in memory that can stop
and takeover the first WPS is a very powerful feature. However,
I've only seen it in action once on my system in the several
years I've used OS/2. Perhaps it would be best to offer an
option where the user could choose whether or not to have the
second WPS active (loaded in memory) or not. Another solution
would be not to have the second WPS loaded at all. Instead, a
little utility could be loaded into memory. This would monitor
the status of the WPS. If the utility found a problem, then
the WPS would get shut down. Then the utility would reboot the
WPS from the hard drive.
