The main purpose of the meeting will be to solicit your ideas as to directions and policy for the BCNN. The publication is now a year and a half old. It started as a way to keep our Clipper user group Executive Committee informed. It's grown to about 3,800 subscribers. And continues to grow about 20-25 persons per day. Let us know: how might we serve you better? Plan to meet with us in Florida. As always, if you cannot be there in person, email your ideas and questions about the future directions of BCNN. 3. 'Cliff Notes' for CA TechniCon 93 in Orlando ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ReplyTo: bcnn@World.Std.Com or CIS:73020,3435. Subject: BCNN@Technicon93. Deadline: September 8, 1993. About 75 of you have volunteered to record your insights and send them to BCNN for inclusion in our report. We will publish your comments and upload the report to CIS, LIB 1 in September or October. You are free to distribute the report as widely as you want. Note. Last year's Cliff report, edited by Ginny Caughey [70714,1741], was posted to CIS:CLIPPER, LIB 1, TECHCO.ZIP. Instruction. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Record your positively worded, world-class insights--insights that move you ahead as a professional programmer, insights that would incent you to purchase particular products, insights that make the whole trip worth it all. 2) Remember to BE SPECIFIC. Saying 'This is a great session' or 'lots of good tips about TBROWSE' are of little value to someone 12,000 miles away. 3) No evaluations please! Just your 'best of Orlando'. 4) Keep track of your comments during the sessions, and email them by September 8th. 5) Distribute the report to your own user group, company, or clients. SAMPLES FROM LAST YEAR'S REPORT FROM NEW YORK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SESSION: #3115 ADVANCED NETWORK PROGRAMMING ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Dennis Levitt [71042,666] 1) There are serious compatibility issues between Clipper, Fox and dBase on how they each lock a file. They each do it differently. 2) Transaction Tracking in Novell slows down performance. Instead, store a pre-image of the data in multi-dimensional arrays which are then saved either with an array-saving utility or built and then saved to a memo field. 3) If you want to check if a record is locked, set an errorblock and then try to delete the record. If its locked, you'll get an error. LUNCHTIME IDEAS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Dennis Levitt [71042,666] Do not put a lot of columns into a TBrowse, because this will slow down processing dramatically. Insert and delete TBColumns as user hits K_RIGHT or K_LEFT so the number of columns is kept to a minimum. This will speed up the TBrowse a lot. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- GENERAL OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Guy Smith [100014,1724] 1) Bertrand Meyer - 'Prototyping is an excuse for not writing a specification properly.' 2) SET RELATION - When the record pointer is moved in the parent table the record pointer is -NOT- moved in the child tables. Clipper optimizes SET RELATION by setting a 'movement pending' flag in the child tables. The move is not actually performed until the child is accessed in some way (such as by getting a field value). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: David Husnian [76064,1535] My only impression is that this was the best run (and probably the best overall) developers conference I've been to (I've been to all but one that were in the US). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Bill French [71350,461] Sorry... can't give you any insights into the CA conference because they wouldn't let me attend any of the sessions. The vendor show, however, was the best ever! Well managed, and thoughtfully arranged to allow maximum commercial exposure. I hope they can produce software as well as they get customers. Session: #4204 ADDING MOUSE SUPPORT TO CA-CLIPPER APPLICATIONS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Peter K Traeg [70670,2023] 1) Access to the mouse driver can be accomplished through the use of Ted Means' public domain FT_INT86() function which is part of the Nanforum library. 2) It is a good idea to develop a mouse aware inkey() function. From this function a mouseable menu system and alert box can be built. 3) The GET system can be modified to call the mouse aware inkey function and then move the GET focus from one get to another depending upon which GET the user clicks on. 5. Using OZCIS to communicate with CompuServe Information Service (CIS) ------------------------------------------------------------------- ReplyTo: Manny Garcia [72467,1342] I have been using OzCIS:since it was first released by its author, Steve Sneed, over a year ago. OzCIS:is in its second major revision and is a pretty attractive off-line/on-line package for communicating with CIS. It has pull-downs, exploding boxes and a contact-sensitive help system. It comes with substantial documentation that greatly assists the novice users and also aids experienced users. It also contains a scripting language enabling you to customize your activity. OzCIS:is such an intuitive product that first time users of any CIS: front-end product would be able to jump right in and start using. 'Old Timers' of other CIS:front-ends can appreciate the look & feel, format, flexibility, and tools. You can also track your usages in a log which applies a rate schedule that you define. Once you have installed OzCIS:on your PC, there are two basic steps you must do to start using the package: (1) HOST CONFIGURATION identifies the computer(s) that you will be dialing into to gain access to CIS. (2) PROFILE CONFIG with CIS:dials up CIS:and sets the 'defaults' for your CIS:sessions when you are on-line. You don't do any work here - just kick back and watch! After configuring CIS, you can then finalize your configuration of OzCIS. Set up the forums that you want to participate in. This will customize how you interact with a particular forum. You can do things like read all new message threads, read only message threads in the sections you are interested in, scan the message headers in the sections you are interested in, and other session related activity. Managing threads. OzCIS:has an incredible ability to manage the conversations on a forum. You control what messages you want to read and ignore ones that are not of interest to you. OzCIS:keeps track of these messages and allows you to go through the MESSAGE TREE at any time. You can also look up threads by subject. This is quite POWERFUL! You can reply to messages using OzCIS's built in editor. Uploading and downloading. If you download the library headers periodically, you can have access to a catalog of files that you tag for download. It will let you know if you have already downloaded this preventing you from $pending any more money! Mail manager and address book. You can hold ALL your messages for viewing at any time. You can also compose messages off-line and then CC them to as many people as you want. You write the message and OzCIS: does the rest! Version 2.0 has improved the way you communicate with CompuServe. After all, you don't want to be doing things while you are on-line. I hate hearing the cash register ringing when I am standing there holding my wallet! 13. BCNN Statement of Ownership, Copyright, and Responsibility. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The BCNN Newsletter is sponsored by the xBASE User Group of the Boston Computer Society. BCNN is dedicated to keeping professional database developers (both consultants and corporate employees) informed about educational events, meetings, job openings, world events, notable articles, technical tips, new and 'must have' products, etc. As an electronic network BCNN is also a hub where developers can address world class issues to fellow developers around the world. Recipients agree to respond via Email to periodic polls of their directions, opinions, and needs. For those who do not have User Groups in their areas, BCNN is a vehicle where individuals can volunteer and contribute to something larger than themselves. Over 3,800 persons world-wide now participate. The newsletter is distributed monthly by electronic mail via CompuServe, Internet, FidoNet, and other electronic gateways. It is free of charge to individual developers. Modest fees are charged to corporations for job placement and third-party announcements. Opinions expressed are solely expressed by the Xbase Language Group of the Boston Computer Society, even in cases where 'Xbase Language Group' is abbreviated to 'BCS'. All materials are copyrighted by the BCS, unless otherwise indicated, and free for any user group to redistribute on their own BBS on the condition that a by-line referencing the BCS is included.
