A PAF Users' Group has been established and is operating in the Washington D.C. area under the name C-PAF-UG. ********************* What is C-PAF-UG? *********************** The Capital PAF Users' Group, Inc. (C-PAF-UG) is a non-profit, no stock organization incorporated in Maryland. It is supported by and for users of the Genealogical Management System for Home Computers (Personal Ancestral File (tm)), published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. C-PAF-UG is NOT part of that church, although the organization tries to maintain close contact with the Genealogical Department of the church to become knowledgeable of proposed changes, patches, and computer versions as they become available. ******************** What does C-PAF-UG do? ******************* The main purpose of C-PAF-UG is to provide frequent opportunities for members to share information, ideas, genealogical data, and solutions in order to make their computer and their copy of the Personal Ancestral File more genealogically useful and enjoyable. The main functions consist of a newsletter, "ABT-PAF", monthly meetings, a software library, small-group meetings for specialized interests, and a bulletin board system. ********************** The newsletter *********************** "ABT-PAF" usually contains articles on several aspects of the Personal Ancestral File and computers such as hardware reviews, software enhancements, explanations of the mysteries of operating systems, genealogical tidbits, etc.. It is currently published on a quarterly basis; but, as more and more information in the form of articles, announcements and computer-genealogical information is furnished from the membership, it will become a monthly publication. It is distributed at meetings to those members attending, and mailed to those members who do not attend. ************************ Meetings **************************** Meetings are scheduled to be held the third saturday of each month at the Genealogical Library next to the Mormon Temple, 10000 Stoneybrook Drive, Kensington, MD. Special interest group meetings, library disk sales, and informal discussions begin at 1:00 p.m. The short business meeting at 2:00 p.m. is followed by a presentation or program. Announcements and a question and answer period follow the program. ******************** The software library ******************** The library contains valuable programs, utilities, patch codes, forms, etc., to aid in the use of the Personal Ancestrial File and your computer for genealogical purposes. All software is in the public domain or "user supported". Copies of disks are sold at very reasonable prices. ******************* The Bulletin Board System ***************** The BBS will be operated soon on a trial basis for the exchange of messages, genealogical data, and public domain software among members. Access will be available to non-members, as well as to members by means of password controls, to leave messages, and upload and download software and patches. There is no charge for using the board; however, each user must bear his own phone charges. ******************* Membership in C-PAF-UG ****************** Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the Personal Ancestral File and computers. Members are encouraged to take active roles in any of the regular functions of the group. In fact, the continued success of C-PAF-UG depends upon lively participation of the members. Cost of membership is $15.00 per year. Send check with short discription of your computer and/or genealogical experience to: Capital PAF Users' Group, P.O.
