WHAT IS CPAFUG? The Capital PAF Users' Group, Inc. (CPAFUG) is a non-profit, no stock organization incorporated in Maryland. It is supported by and for users of the Genealogical Management System for home computers (Personal Ancestral File (tm)), published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. CPAFUG is not part of, or under direction of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). CPAFUG is independent of any organization. However, CPAFUG does support the use of, and is organized as, a User Group of the Personal Ancestral File (PAF) genealogy management system. The genealogy system called PAF is copyrighted, maintained, and distributed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). WHAT DOES CPAFUG DO? The main purpose of CPAFUG is to provide frequent opportunities for members to share information, ideas, genealogical data, and solutions in order to make their computer and their copy of the Personal Ancestral File more genealogically useful and enjoyable. The main functions consist of a newsletter, "ABT PAF", monthly meetings, a software library, small-group meetings for specialized interests, and a bulletin board system. THE NEWSLETTER "ABT PAF" usually contains articles on several aspects of the Personal Ancestral File and computers such as hardware reviews, software enhancements, explanations of the mysteries of operating systems, genealogical tidbits, etc.. It is currently published on a quarterly basis; but, as more and more information in the form of articles, announcements and computer-genealogical information is furnished from the membership, it will become a more frequent publication. It is distributed at meetings to those members attending, and mailed to those who do not attend. Back issues are available at a price of $2.00 at the meetings or $3.00 by mail. MEETINGS Meetings are normally held on the third saturday of each month at the Family History Library next to the Mormon Temple, 10,000 Stoneybrook Drive, Kensington, Maryland. Special interest group meetings, and informal discussions begin at 1:00 p.m. The short business meeting at 2:00 p.m. is followed by a presentation or program. Announcements and a question and answer period follow the program. THE SOFTWARE LIBRARY The library contains valuable programs, utilities, patch codes, forms, etc., to aid in the use of the Personal Ancestral File and your computer for genealogical purposes. All software is in the public domain or "user supported". Copies of disks are sold at very reasonable prices at meetings and by mail. Library disks are $3.00 each at the monthly meetings and $5.00 each by mail. THE BULLETIN BOARD SYSTEM The Bulletin Board System(BBS) is operational for the exchange of messages, genealogical data, and public domain software among members. Access is available to non-members as well as to members by means of password controls, to leave messages, and up-load and down-load software and patches. There is no charge for using the board; however, each user must bear his/her own outside of area phone charges. The phone numbers are: (301) 290-9530 in Columbia, MD and (301) 384-8947 in Silver Spring, MD. MEMBERSHIP IN CPAFUG Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the Personal Ancestral File and micro-computers. Members are encouraged to take active roles in any of the regular functions of the group. In fact, the continued success of CPAFUG depends upon lively participation of the members.
