30A06.TXT - What's New in NAV 3.0's Definitions Update AntiVirus Lab, SYMANTEC/Peter Norton Product Group April 1, 1994 ****************************************************************** Thank you for downloading this, the sixth consecutive virus definition update for the Norton AntiVirus version 3.0. The contents of this ZIP file will bring your NAV up to date as of April, 1994. It is all-inclusive--you do not need any of the previous update files. This text file describes the contents of the ZIP file, the installation procedure, and describes in detail what's new in this update. All contents of this file have been scanned by Norton AntiVirus and are free from virus infection. The virus definition and repair data included with 30A06 are for use by Norton AntiVirus version 3.0 only, they will not work with any other anti-virus software or any earlier version of NAV. If you experience any trouble with this update, please contact NAV technical support, using any of the methods listed in your user's manual. ****************************************************************** 30A06.ZIP-contains: VIRSCAN.DAT-this is the actual data used to detect and repair viruses. Not merely an update, this is a replacement for the entire existing definition set. VIRSCAN.INF-provides the database of information used by the [Info] section of Norton AntiVirus. It is kept separate from the VIRSCAN.DAT file as it may not always be necessary to update. 30A06.TXT-the file you are now reading, this text file contains descriptions of the components of 30A06.ZIP, instructions for installation and revision notes. ****************************************************************** ****************************************************************** Loading New Definitions Note: The files contained in this zip file, referred to as a virus definition update set, completely replace the corresponding files contained within the product. Only the latest virus definition set is required to update the product. ****************************************************************** NAV 3.0 has greatly simplified the definition update process. There are now only two steps to updating your copy of Norton AntiVirus. 1. Copy VIRSCAN.DAT and VIRSCAN.INF into the Norton AntiVirus directory. 2. Scan with NAV, in either DOS or Windows. NOTES: If you have unzipped this file inside your \NAV directory, (\NDW for users of Norton Desktop for Windows), then you have already completed the first step. If you unzipped the three files into another directory, or are viewing this, still ZIPped (by using a ZIP management program) then copy the extracted files to your NAV directory. You want to overwrite the existing, old, data files, in case you are asked. Then, in either DOS or Windows, activate NAV and scan any drive, directory or file. This will generate new interim files, and update NAVTSR. Exiting NAV (and Windows) and rebooting your computer to load the new NAVTSR completes the process. You are now operating with the latest anti-virus protection. ****************************************************************** The following is a detailed list of the new virus definitions in this update, and some very important data regarding current worldwide virus alerts. ****************************************************************** Ten most commonly reported viruses (worldwide): Form Boot infector Stoned.Std Boot infector Kampana.3700 Boot infector Michelangelo Boot infector V-Sign Boot infector Joshi Boot infector Tequila Boot & EXE infector Jerusalem.1808 COM & EXE infector NoINT Boot infector Yankee Doodle.TP-44 COM & EXE infector Be on alert for the following viruses in the following areas: Athens South America (Chile, Brasil) CPW2 South America, Northeast US Exebug.D Australia Freddy 2 South America Monkey North America Parity Boot Europe (Germany) Ripper Europe (UK) Satan Bug US Govt contacts Stealth.B Eastern US Tremor Europe (Germany) V-Sign Eastern US The following changes have been incorporated into this update: New: 3-Tunes File infector Atomic.371 File infector Atomic.480 File infector DataLock.1740 File infector DOS 7.376 File infector DOS 7.419 File infector Finnish Sprayer Boot infector LZ File infector Memory Lapse.366 File infector NYB Boot infector PCBB.1726(Gen1) File infector Peace Man File infector Sandy Beaches File infector Sayha File infector Stoned.Generic Boot infector Storm.1217 File infector VVMEXE Boot & file infector Wild Fire File infector Updates of present definitions: Fairzh Name changed to Eternal Iper File false id fixed Silly BP Name changed to French Boot ****************************************************************** We welcome any comments you may have on this text file, and this update in general.
