** INTRODUCTION README.TXT file for TNGEPLST.* and DS9EPLST.*. Written by Blake Nancarrow. Read it! Don't be lazy. It'll only take a few minutes... This file accompanies the Star Trek TNG and DS9 episode guides. They are WordPerfect 5.1 documents. The guides are meant to be small and portable, ideal for the coffee table. They are fairly easy to print for yourself as long as you use an appropriate font but, MOST IMPORTANTLY, print their pages in the appropriate order. This is particularly true if you do not have a duplex printer at your disposal. Also, to assemble the guides, you will need a fairly large stapler (with a 4¼ inch reach)... Finally, this document has a graphic on the front page: if your printer doesn't like these graphics then suppress or delete them. ** DUPLEX PRINTING Originally, these documents were produced for an Epson dot-matrix printer. A lot of manual effort is required in printing them. If you have a duplex printer, that is, one that can print automatically to both sides of a sheet of paper, then you can put all this technology to use. New documents have been designed for printing on an Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IID or IIID duplex laser printer. They look great on this printer *and* require considerably less effort on your part! ** THE NUMBERS The guides, in their final form, are 4¬ inches wide and 11 inches tall. This is achieved by folding normal 8« by 11 inch paper in half across the length. They are bound like a book with staples. The Next Generation document is 14 pages in length; Deep Space Nine is 6 pages long. When folded in half, in a booklet form, they have then twice as many "pages." Before you print these files, ensure they are the correct length. If your "small" printer font is too large, WordPerfect will automatically extend the document but this will adversely affect the paging in the guide. DON'T PRINT THEM IF THEY ARE LONGER THAN 12 OR 6 PAGES. ** INCLUDED FILES The files contained within this archive are as follows: README.TXT The text file you're reading now. MOVED!2.TXT Text file with my new address information. DS9EPLST.DUP DS9 guide for printing on duplex printer. DS9EPLST.NOD DS9 guide for printing on non-duplex printer. TNGEPLST.DUP TNG guide for printing on duplex printer. TNGEPLST.NOD TNG guide for printing on non-duplex printer. ASCIITNG.TXT TNG episodes in unformatted text file. ASCIIDS9.TXT DS9 episodes in unformatted text file. REQUESTS.TXT A fill-in-the-blanks form for Internet copies. That's it! ** LOADING OR RETRIEVING When you load any of these documents, you will likely receive a warning that the printer driver is not found, "formatting for default printer." This is a normal WordPerfect warning when you build a document with one printer but print using a WordPerfect that doesn't know about that printer. Ignore this specific warning but be sure to check the fonts that WordPerfect uses in place of the ones I selected. And, once again, preview the document to ensure it is the proper length. See the notes below about changing the document and WordPerfect to work. ** PRINTING ON A DUPLEX PRINTER You can print your own copies quickly if you have the following: microcomputer WordPerfect 5.1 a duplex printer such as an HP LaserJet IID or IIID decent fonts 20 sheets of nice paper 6 minutes Load each document, adjust fonts if necessary, preview it, VERIFY THE LENGTH, and send it to print. Simple, huh? Arrange the pages in stardate order with the cover facing out. Staple carefully on the spine just like a small book. Fold in half. Presto! ** PRINTING ON A NON-DUPLEX PRINTER You can still print copies if you have the following: microcomputer WordPerfect 5.1 non-duplex printer such as an Epson LQ some small fonts 20 sheets of nice paper 35 minutes The Next Generation ------------------- Print the first 7 pages on one side of 7 pieces of paper. Keep them in order! Then print pages 8 through 14 on the opposite sides of these 7 sheets. Insert the sheets in the order that they were printed in the first run. In other words, the WordPerfect page 8 is printed on the back of sheet 1, the WP page 9 on the back of sheet 2, et cetera. Use the Multiple Pages command in the Print menu (M or 5) and enter "8-14" and press Enter. Arrange them in stardate with the cover facing out. Staple carefully on the spine just like a small book. Fold in half. See? Deep Space Nine --------------- Print pages 1 through 3. Keep pages in order! Send pages 4 through 6 to print. Insert previously printed sheets in same order from first fun. WordPerfect's page 4 will print on back of sheet 1, WP page 5 will print on back of 2, etc. Use the Multiple Pages command. Arrange into stardate order with cover facing out. Staple careful along spine and fold in half. ** OTHER PRINTERS Obviously, you may not have these printers. You can still print this document if you use fonts that are not too large. The bulk of the document (particularly, each episode's description) is generated using the Epson's Roman font set to a horizontal pitch of 15 characters per inch. The episode titles and stardate are printed in Roman 12 cpi. The page header is in Sans Serif 12 cpi double-high. The entire document is printed with a standard vertical pitch of 6 lines per inch. ** FONTS In each of the documents, there are *some* specific fonts requested. You may not have these available so some changes on your part may be necessary. The bulk of the document uses font size "attributes" however so as to minimize the impact of not having certain, esoteric fonts... The episode description text is printed at a smaller size by using the "small" font attribute (selected via the Font [Ctrl-F8]|Size|Small command). By default, this is 80% the size of the normal font used by WordPerfect. If your "small" font is too large, you must select a smaller printer font. Do not attempt to replace the [SMALL] [small] print codes; that is too difficult. You can easily alter what WordPerfect interprets as small by using the command: Setup [Shift-F1]|Initial Settings|Print Options|Size Attribute Ratios. By default, this number is around 80%; make it smaller, say 40 to 60%. These settings are stored in the printer driver so it must be updated. - go into the Print menu [Shift-F7] - select the Printer command (S) - highlight the printer for adjustment - select Update (U or 7) The printer update is required if you do not have a Postscript printer. ** GRAPHICS A graphic of the Next Generation logo is included on the cover page of this guide. If it does not print correctly on your printer, suppress the printing of graphics from the WordPerfect print menu. Conversely, it you can print the graphic, ensure WordPerfect uses the highest graphics quality. - access the Print menu (Shift-F7) - select Graphics Quality (G) - set to not print (N or 1) or set to high quality (H) ** CLOSING If you have any trouble with this document, leave me a note on Canada Remote Systems or write. If in a real mind-warp, you'll find my telephone inside the guide...
