7800 Managers Set v1.0 - OS/2 2.X Installation instructions for the AIC-7870 OS/2 2.X Driver 1) Open the OS/2 System folder, then open the System Setup folder. 2) Select Device Driver Install. 3) Insert the driver diskette in the appropriate drive. 4) CHANGE to the directory where the drivers are located. The OS/2 2.X driver files are usually in the OS2_2X directory. 5) When you have found the drivers, select INSTALL. 6) The system will be scanned for host adapters. If a host adapter is found, you will see this message in a pop-up window: Installing Device Drivers Another message will appear when the driver has successfully been installed. If no host adapters are found, an error message will be displayed. ***** NOTE ***** If you are installing the driver on the GA release of OS/2 2.X, you cannot install the driver by selecting the icon in the System Setup folder. Instead, open a full-screen OS/2 session and go to the directory where the drivers reside. Then type DDINSTAL and press ENTER. New command line switches: /EDGE - Allows Lance adapter to set interrupt to EDGE triggered. Currently the adapter works only with EDGE triggered interrupt. /INT: - Allows IRQ value set to any numbers for an adapter. Only IRQ value 10 has been tested. /V - Allows the verbose mode to be on. It shows all adapters and targets (Vendor, Model, etc..) informations on the screen as the system boots up. /TAG: - Sets the number of tagged commands for all target devices on the host adapter (1-16). A value of one disables tagged queuing. 16 is the maximum number allowed and also the default value. Examples: BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD /V /EDGE /INT:10 will set the interrupt to EDGE triggered and IRQ value to 10. Please see LIMITATIONS section for proper use of these switches. BASEDEV=AIC7870.ADD /A:0 /TAG:8 will set the number of tagged commands for all target devices on the first host adapter to 8. LIMITATIONS ----------- ************ NOTE ************* 1. Currently OS/2 cannot support more than one Javelin (AIC7870) adapter board. 2. The PCI systems that are PCI Specification 2.X compliant, usually have plug and play system BIOS; and these systems are capable of setting interrupt level and IRQ number automatically. Hence, for these systems the above /EDGE and /INT switch options should not be used. 3. Fault Tolerance is now supported in the driver. Although, the ABORT and SCSI BUS RESET will only work for the targets that are properly behaved. 4. All the switch options that are supported in the previous OS/2 2.X Drivers (especially, AIC 7770 Driver) remain same in this driver, except /NTAG, and /OPTIMA switches. The /NTAG command switch is not needed. Since /TAG:1 option disables the tagged queuing for all target devices, on a given host adapter, capable of doing tagged queuing commands, and sends maximum of 2 non-tagged commands to the HIM driver by default. Therefore, the HIM driver treats all target devices as non-tagged devices, and sends only one non-tagged commands at a time to the host adapter. The /OPTIMA switch is not needed for AIC7870 driver, since this release of the driver will always run in OPTIMA mode. 5. Data corruption has been seen in almost any PCI systems contain i486 or Pentium processor. To avoid this data integrety problem systems should be run with cache disabled through system bios. 6. The co-existence of any other non-ADAPTEC PCI adapters, especially S3 Video adapter, may cause system to hang. 7. Boot will fail when COMPAQ CDU 561-31 (SCSI-2, SYNC) CDROM is used - this CDROM hangs system.
