You can also create a catalog of any combination of files. You can hold down the key while using the mouse to add and subtract files from being selected. Also, if no files are selected, GDS will catalog every file. 2) Next, select "Create Catalog" from the "View" menu. Use the "up" and "down" arrow keys to increase or decrease the number of thumbnails displayed on the screen. 3) Make sure the "Borders" and "Labels" options are set as you want them. Type "L" and "B" to change them, or use the mouse and click on the "Labels" and "Borders" buttons. 4) Press [Enter] to start generating the first screen. 5) When each screen is done, press or to write the screen out as a GDS catalog .GIF or .JPG file. GDS names the files sequentially like GDS000.GIF, GDS001.GIF, GDS002.GIF, unless you've used the "/N" command line option (see "COMMAND LINE OPTIONS" below.) *SPECIAL NOTE: If you want to write all remaining catalog screens in one batch, you can use or rather than or . 6) You can print the catalog image by pressing 'P' at the prompt after each catalog screen is completed. If you do, GDS prints the catalog image and then returns you to the prompt again, in case you want to save the file or exit. GDS printouts support Hewlett Packard LaserJet II, 3, 4 and compatible printers (also see the /#LPT command line option for printer configuration information; the printer must be configured properly). 7) You're done. When you look at the GIF or JPG files, you will be able to click on a picture to see the original, as long as the original file is in the current file list. You can also use and to move through multiple screen catalogs while viewing the catalogs. HELPFUL HINTS ------------- Some users like to generate catalogs with a black background, rather than a white one. White backgrounds are the default mode for GDS, and are great for printing catalogs. If you do need to use a black background, you can toggle the "White Catalog Backgnd" option in the "View" menu. If you have to catalog a large number of images, you can use the /W command line option to tell GDS to automatically write catalog images. Here's how it works: 1) Start GDS with the /W option. The "" is the first file number, for example, /W4 would write the first catalog as GDS004.GIF. 2) Use GDS to create the first catalog screen (as described at the top of this document). 3) When GDS is done creating the catalog, type to write the image as a GIF file and continue making catalog screens. From this point on, GDS will automatically write successive catalog screens to GIF files. This process can also be automated from the command line, by using the /P option. Just specify the path/file specification of the files to be cataloged and include the /P and /W options. The "/P" option sets the number thumbnail tiles across for the catalog screens. For example, /P4 would create catalog screens with four thumbnails across, and probably four high. The default for this option is 200. You may save a very small amount of RAM by setting this number lower if you use GDS with fewer than 150 files at a time. Setting this number to 50 will save 3450 bytes of RAM. As the file list grows, GDS may run out of memory, which will stop GDS from adding valid files to the file list. This should not happen unless GDS is trying to deal with thousands of files. You can select multiple files by clicking and holding the mouse button while dragging the pointer over a number of files. You can also select multiple ranges by holding down [Shift] while clicking on file names to select or deselect them. NOTE: The trial version will not do "batch conversions," it will only convert one file at a time. 2) Pull down the "Convert" menu with the mouse (or type ALT-C) and select the desired type of file. 3) GDS will open a dialog box that allows you to ROTATE the image or MIRROR (flip) it vertically or horizontally as it writes out the file. GDS will attempt to name the file the same as the source but with the new extension. If the extension is the same, or a file with the name already exists, GDS will name the file GDS where is the next available number, i.e. GDS000, GDS001, GDS002... FROM THE VIEW SCREEN 1) (OPTIONAL) To save a portion of the displayed image: move the mouse pointer to the "File" menu and highlight "Set Save Rect". Release the mouse button. Move the mouse pointer to one corner of the rectangular area you want to save. Click and hold the mouse button. Drag the rectangle that appears to the desired size. Release the mouse button. Only the area inside the rectangle will be saved by following the remaining steps. (If you are unhappy with your selection you can return the crop rectangle to include the entire screen by selecting "Reset Crop Rectangle" from the "File" menu.) 2) Move the mouse pointer to the top of the view screen. Click and hold the mouse button. The "View Mode Menu Bar" will appear. 3) Move the mouse pointer to the "File" menu. 4) Highlight the type of destination file by moving the mouse pointer to it and releasing the button. 5) GDS will open a dialog box to name the file. If the name GDS picks is acceptable, hit [Enter]. Otherwise change the name and hit [Enter]. (Use the arrow keys or the mouse to move up and down.) The following procedure automatically configures GDS to run with your system. If you have trouble, call (510)449-9079 for technical assistance. QUICK START FOR IMPATIENT USERS: -------------------------------- 1) DO NOT just hit [Esc] to exit the configuration so you can run GDS. Go through the configuration like a normal human, and you'll be happier. 2) Don't assume the machine is crashed until you've waited for at least 20 seconds without hearing a beep. Some video cards take a long time. 3) If GDS beeps, that means a test pattern was drawn, even if you can't see it properly. Press 'Y' to accept the mode, 'N' to kill it. 4) If you determine that the machine is crashing after you type 'Y' to approve a certain mode, see "*** CRASHING MODES ***" below. 5) If you are not getting all of the modes you think you should be getting, GDS is probably unable to detect the video card properly. Try /VESA on the command line, and if that doesn't work, call. QUICK NOTE: If you have a VESA compatible SVGA and GDS doesn't recognize all of the modes the card is supposed to support, delete the file called "CONFIG" and run GDS again by specifying '/VESA' on the command line (Type: GDS /VESA). INSTRUCTIONS ------------ GDS analyzes each mode to determine if it is valid. YOU MAY SEE THE SCREEN GO CRAZY, which MAY be normal. Allow 10-15 seconds delay before assuming that the machine is crashed. We have seen video cards take up to 30 seconds to respond correctly with a video mode. Once GDS has determined that a mode seems OK, GDS draws a test pattern on the screen and beeps once. If the screen looks OK, then press 'Y'. When you press 'Y', GDS will immediately continue on to the next mode. Repeat this process until GDS prompts you (in text mode) to save the configuration. IF YOU HEAR A BEEP BUT DON'T SEE A GOOD TEST PATTERN, PRESS 'N'. When you press 'N', GDS should immediately change the state of the video system, which you should be able to notice. If you do not notice a change within 20 seconds, reset your machine. Many video monitors cannot support certain modes because of their high frequency scan rates. This type of incompatibility is very common, and is nothing to be worried about. If GDS tries to set a mode that your monitor does not support, the screen may flicker, quickly shear and scroll in various directions, flash on and off, and generally look very bad. If this happens, wait for the beep, and just press 'N'. If the beep does not come within 30 seconds, follow the instructions to manually omit the mode below under "*** CRASHING MODES ***" below. REPEATED CONFIGURATIONS ----------------------- (Video Deja Vu) If GDS keeps putting you through the configuration every time you run GDS, then remove the semicolon (';') before the following line in the GDSUSER.CFG file: auto,/ok ;assume CONFIG file is ok GDS checks the very beginning of the video BIOS to determine if the video hardware has changed, so it can automatically reconfigure the video mode support when you change computers. Some very recent video cards change the contents of the video BIOS, which tricks GDS into thinking they are a new video card. The "/OK" switch prevents GDS from automatically reconfiguring the video modes because of a video BIOS change. *** CRASHING MODES *** If GDS crashes immediately after pressing [Enter] from this text screen, try using the /LAPTOP command line parameter when running GDS. If this does not solve the problem, call (510)449-9079 for more information. If the machine locks up after pressing 'Y' after a good mode, go through the following steps to omit the mode manually: 1) Start GDS again, and remember the screen resolution (displayed at the upper left of each screen). When the machine locks up again, you'll now remember what mode came just before it. Reset the machine again. 2) Start GDS again, and go through the modes until you get to the mode just before where the machine locked up in step 1. Press [Enter] for this mode rather than 'Y'. GDS will switch to text mode and display a window in the middle of the screen. 3) Press 'Y'. GDS will redo the text window to display the resolution of the mode which is locking up the machine. 4) Press 'N' to kill the mode which is locking the machine. Now GDS should redo the text window to display the mode AFTER the mode which was locking up the machine. At this point, it may be OK to press [Enter], which will put you back into the graphics 'Y'/'N' process again. If this locks up the machine again, then keep repeating steps 2-4 but keep manually killing each mode that you know locks up the machine. NOTE: To print this file, copy GDSMODE.TXT to your printer. Your printer's port name may be PRN, LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3 depending on your machine's setup. For example, if you printer is PRN, then use the following command line: COPY GDSMODE.TXT PRN Fortunately, you should only have to get all of the way through this configuration process once, and then GDS will save the information so you won't have to do it again. 栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢 :::GDSSHOW.TXT 栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢� CREATING SLIDE SHOWS 栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢栢� SIMPLE SLIDESHOW: 1) Use the mouse to select the files you want to show. Standard modes work on all VGA cards. Many video provide VESA support, although we have NEVER seen a complete VESA implementation, and some video cards require the user to load VESA drivers in order to actually use the modes. Most VESA cards work well enough for GDS to be able to reliably detect and support the available video modes. If you have a VESA video card and GDS is not recognizing one or more of the video modes that the card is supposed to be able to support, you may need to load a VESA driver. In particular, Diamond video cards seem to have the most problems with graphics software, including programs like CSHOW. You can usually get a VESA driver from your video card or computer manufacturer. Many video cards include a software program which supports VESA when the video card does not support VESA by itself. If you have a Diamond video card, you need to "enable" the VESA support: If you have a Diamond VIPER, try putting the following command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: vprmode VESA If you have a Diamond Stealth, try putting the following command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: stlmode VESA There are several VESA drivers available on local BBS systems, CompuServe, America Online and GEnie, such as UniVESA (UVBE*.ZIP). UniVESA has been reported to us to cause incomplete VESA support and some compatibility problems after running Windows with some video cards. We have been unable to determine the extent of UniVESA's support except that it works well for some video systems. Standard Modes: --------------- Hercules 720x348 (Monochrome) CGA 640x200 (Monochrome) 320x200 (4 color) EGA 320x200, 640x200, 640x350 (16 color) VGA 640x480 (Monochrome) 640x480 (16 color) 320x200 (256 color) Tweeked VGA Modes: ------------------ VGA 320x240, 320x400, 360x480 (256 color) VESA Modes ---------- VESA 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 (16 color) 640x400, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 (256 color) 320x200, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 (32768 colors) 320x200, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 (65536 colors) 320x200, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 (16 million colors) Other Non-Standard Modes: ------------------------- These modes occur on video cards that are detected to have specific support capabilities, and the list is really long. If you are interested, please refer to the GDS.CFG file, which should give you A LOT of information about video modes. RECONFIGURING GDS ----------------- If you have already configured GDS and saved the config file, but you want to do it all over again, delete the file called "CONFIG". DO *NOT* DELETE GDS.CFG Deleting GDS.CFG would make it impossible for GDS to configure itself, which would be a bad thing. There is no way to "add" modes to GDS once it has been configured. The only way "add" modes is to delete the file called CONFIG and running GDS again, which reconfigures GDS completely. FORCING GDS VIDEO SUPPORT ------------------------- LAPTOPS: Some laptops crash when GDS tries to bring up the configuration because of incompatibility with very old CGA and EGA modes. If you have a laptop, try using the following switches: /LAPTOP Disable Herc, CGA and EGA (same as /NOHERC /NOCGA /NOEGA) /NOHERC Disable Hercules monochrome mode /NOCGA Disable all CGA modes /NOEGA Disable all EGA modes If you're a power user and don't like monochrome modes, you can disable them from your "MANLY" machine by using the following switch: /NOMONO Disable monochrome modes Even though GDS does a fairly complete job of automatically detecting the available video hardware, you can force GDS to assume it has a specific display type with one of the following command line parameters.
