INTRODUCTION // /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 1.1 About File Manager StepUp ----------------------------- FM StepUp is the powerful and innovative File Manager extender for Microsoft(R) Windows(tm) 3.1, 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups (tm) 3.11. "FM StepUp ... does all manner of clever things. It adds 3D effects (a la Word 6 or Excel 5) to the dialog boxes, gives you a command-line history in all sorts of places ... and provides right-click pop-up menus in a variety of useful places ... FM StepUp is certainly good enough to try." Windows User UK, June 1994 "The standard dialog boxes gain a history list of recently used commands and that attractive 3D look. However ... the best thing about this is the pop-up menus. Right click on a file and a menu pops up giving you a bunch of options, like viewing the file, editing it, running it, printing it, and so on ... once you have started using it you'll never want to give them up!" Australian PC User, June 1994 FM StepUp makes the File Manager an actually user friendly application. With FM StepUp installed into your system you will perform various file management operations easier and faster. FM StepUp enhances standard dialog boxes of the File Manager, providing them with additional useful features (history lists, remembering you previous commands; 'verify' check boxes; 'browse' buttons; etc.). FM StepUp allows you to combine most frequently used commands of the File Manager into the Quick Menu, so you can access them just clicking the right button of your mouse. FM StepUp makes your able to easily create, view, edit, or print arbitrary files, not necessarily associated with an application, and you can assign your favorite viewer or editor to do this. FM StepUp provides you with some unique or hard-to-find commands, allowing you, for example, to figure out the total size of a directory, including all its subdirectories; change date or time of the file; run the default screen saver whenever you want it to; etc. FM StepUp allows you to add your own commands to the File Manager and easily execute them. You may use this possibility to launch frequently used applications (as Control Panel or Clipboard viewer) directly from File Manager menu, or to perform preprogrammed operations over files selected in a File Manager's window (like UnZip or UnArj). If you are a network administrator, FM StepUp can help you to restrict some of the File Manager's capabilities (in almost the same way as you do it for the Program Manager), allowing you to prevent your users from performing potentially dangerous or undesirable commands. After all, FM StepUp is highly customizable. You are in charge of almost every aspect of its functionality - from the size of the history lists to contents of the Quick Menu and Execute Menu. Try it - and you won't believe you worked without FM StepUp before. The way software should be! 1.2. What's new in version 2.6 ---------------------------------- 1) Minor improvements made: you can now add separators to Quick Menu and Execute Menu; Help window has no fixed size; NoOpen restriction entry added; etc. 2) Documentation updated. Ver.2.5 : 1) New SETUP utility - you can activate/deactivate FM StepUp whenever you wish; you can quicly take a look at the software without actually installing it onto hard or network disk; etc. 2) New special command added: Run DOS Program, allowing you to easily exit Windows, run a specified DOS program, and then restart Windows (so that you can now run DOOM 'from' Windows). 3) Minor improvements: Centered Alingment for the Quick Menu can be turned on/off; The About screen on start up can be turned off for registered copies; etc. 4) some changes to documentation made and 5) some bugs fixed: - View File and Edit File menu items are grayed unpredictably; - empty disk lists in Copy Disk dialog box for systems with one floppy drive; - GPF when changing menu name StepUp; - wrong behavior of the Cancel button in the Make System Disk dialog box for systems with only one floppy drive; - GPF when attempting to Delete an empty directory; - improper saving of the FM StepUp settings when Windows shuts down; - improper Printing of large files or large number of files; If you have registered any previous version of the FM StepUp, you can upgrade to the ver.2.x FREE. To register your copy of the FM StepUp you can use the same Registration Number as you used for ver.2.0. After ver. 1.x: A LOT! New features, new documentation, new installation utility, new registration encouragement policy. No new bugs (hopefully!). The only old thing is the price. Yes, due to success of the FM StepUp ver.1.x and support of our registered users, we were able to significantly improve FM StepUp and keep the same low registration fee. And as our special thanks for all of you who invested your money in FM StepUp - the UPGRADE FROM ANY PREVIOUS VERSION OF FM STEPUP to version 2.x is FREE! If you are a registered user of the FM StepUp ver.1.x, you will get new disk from us shortly, if you have not received it yet. If you tried any of the previous versions of the FM StepUp and did not like it by any reason, you should definitely try this one. SPECIAL NOTE for Windows for Workgroups users: if you had given up the FM StepUp ver.1.x because of the conflict between FM StepUp and Toolbar, please take a look at the current version. That bug has been fixed and they (FM StepUp and toolbar) enjoy each the other now. 1.3 How to use the documentation -------------------------------- The complete information on the FM StepUp software, including the description of the installation procedure, how to get updates, how to register your copy, troubleshooting hints, order forms, answers to frequently asked questions, etc., is available in the Windows Help format, file FMSTEPUP.HLP. If you have already installed FM StepUp you can access the information by choosing StepUp | Help from File Manager's menu. Or, double click the 'FM StepUp Help' icon in the FMStepUp group created for Program Manager after automatic installation. Or, choose command 'Run' from Program Manager or File Manager main menu, and enter the full name (including complete path) of the FMSTEPUP.HLP file. For example, if you have placed the FM StepUp files into directory TEMP on your hard disk C, enter the following string into the 'Run' dialog box: C:\TEMP\FMSTEPUP.HLP and click OK button. Yet another way to view the file is open the directory window with the File Manager and double click filename FMSTEPUP.HLP with the mouse. 1.4. INSTALLING File Manager StepUp // /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a stand-alone program: there is no special executable file you would run to start the FM StepUp. To use the FM StepUp software, all you need is properly install it, and it will run automatically every time you run the File Manager. 2.1. Using Setup utility ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FM StepUp v.2.6 comes with convenient and flexible SETUP utility, you can use it if you want to temporarily activate/deactivate the software or install it onto your hard or network disk for permament use. 2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE ------------------------------------------ If you obtained FM StepUp software on a diskette or CD-ROM and want to take a look at the FM StepUp without installing it onto your hard disk, run SETUP.EXE from the FMSTEPUP directory on the diskette or CD-ROM and choose button 'Activate' when prompted. - to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box: A:\FMSTEPUP\SETUP.EXE (assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy drive) After that run File Manager: there should appear a new item in its main menu: StepUp (if there is no such an item, the FM StepUp has not been activated; see below in this file for possible reasons) Of course, be sure that the diskette or CD with FM StepUp is available during the loading of the File Manager! Try this: - place mouse cursor in the File Manager window and click with the right button. The Quick Menu should pop up with a number of choices; try some of them. - open StepUp submenu and choose Special; try commands from it; - open standard dialog boxes of the File Manager: Run, Copy, Move, etc. Do they look better with 3D effects? Are the history lists next to the editable fields handy? - choose StepUp | Preferences: what do you want to customize? Try buttons: Dialogs; Quick Menu; Execute Menu; try to change the menu name 'StepUp' to something else. Now, if you see that FM StepUp is not what you need, run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Deactivate' button. In addition, to completely clean your system up, you should delete the FMSTEPUP.INI file from your WINDOWS directory. Otherwise, if you want to give the program more long try and wish to install it onto your hard or network disk, you can choose button 'Install' when SETUP.EXE prompts you. Please see the next section of this file for more information. 2.1.2. Installing on a hard or network disk ------------------------------------------- If you have already placed all the files from the FM StepUp package on your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the files from an archive), you can just run SETUP.EXE and choose button 'Activate'. If you don't have the FM StepUp files on the hard disk, choose 'Install' button instead and then enter the path to directory where you want the FM StepUp be installed. In this case SETUP.EXE will copy all the files to new location and then activate them. In addition, you will be prompted to create a separate program group for FM StepUp. It's not essential to have such a group, but it can be convenient. Anyway, the last word is yours! 2.1.3. Uninstalling FM StepUp ----------------------------- To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM StepUp, you can run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Deactivate' button. If you decide to start using FM StepUp later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Activate'. Otherwise, to completely remove FM StepUp from your system, deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove all the files from directory on your hard or network disk where you have installed FM StepUp. In addition, erase file FMSTEPUP.INI from your WINDOWS directory, and delete program group 'FMStepUp' from your Program Manager, if your created it during installation. 2.2. Registering your copy of the FM StepUp ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The first time you run FM StepUp, it displayes a registration reminder, and the About FM StepUp screen reads 'Unregistered copy'. If you have registered FM StepUp and obtained your personal Registration Number from us, you may use it to remove the registration reminder from the screen and put your name in the About FM StepUp screen: choose Preferences from the StepUp menu of File Manager and when a dialog box pops up, click the Register button. Now enter your name (exactly as it appears in your Registration acknowledgment) and the Registration number. Be sure to enter your name EXACTLY as it's written in the Registration Acknowledgment, including all the spaces, punctuation, and entering letters in proper case (upper or lower). If you wish your name to be spelled differently please let us know and we assign you a new registraion number. 2.3. Manual installation/deinstallation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If the automatic installation fails by any reason, you can install the FM StepUp manually: 1. Create a directory on a hard disk for FM StepUp, say C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp installation disk into that directory. If you obtained the FM StepUp files compressed in an archive, extract all the files from it. 2. Close File Manager. 3. Copy the file CTL3D.DLL into the Windows SYSTEM directory on your hard drive (be sure not to overwrite the newer version of this file if you have already got one!). If you are using a networked Windows installation and the SYSTEM directory is write-protected, put the file CTL3D.DLL into the WINDOWS directory. 4. Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS directory on your hard disk (or directory you specified when installing Windows). Please note: the file you need is WINFILE.INI, not WIN.INI. Find the section [AddOns] in this file and place the following string right after the string [AddOns]: FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL (or specify the directory you copied the FM StepUp's files in, if other than FMSTEPUP). The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like this: ... [AddOns] FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL ... (... means other lines of the file). Save the file. 5. Run File Manager. You shell find new menu item, StepUp, among the other items of the File Manager's main menu, if the installation has been completed successfully. If you cannot see the StepUp item in the main menu of the File Manager, an error has occurred. Please verify that you have done all the steps above, and, particularly, specified correct path in the [AddOns] section of the WINFILE.INI file. Make sure also that the files have not been corrupted when copying them onto your hard disk (do they have the same sizes as the files on the installation diskette?) To manually uninstall FM STEPUP: 1. Close File Manger and remove string 'FM StepUp=...' from WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example). After that you can restart File Manager: FM StepUp will not be loaded. If you decide later to start using FM StepUp again, place the string 'FM StepUp=...' specifying complete DOS path to FMSTEPUP.DLL file, in the [AddOn] section of the WINFILE.INI file. There following steps should be completed only if you wish to remove the FM StepUp from your system permanently: 2. Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where you installed FM StepUp in; 3. Delete file FMSTEPUP.INI from the WINDOWS directory; 4. Delete program group 'FMStepUp' in the Program manager window, if there is one. We hope you'll change your mind! 2.3. Restricting File Manager ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you are a system administrator, you may find that FM StepUp gives too much power to Windows users. That's why we made FM StepUp able to restrict itself. With the FM StepUp you can also restrict the user's access to some of the features of the File Manager in the same way as you can do it for Program Manager. To restrict File Manager, create file FMSTEPUP.SYS in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, make the [Restrictions] section in that file, and add desired boolean entries listed below to it. Standard rules for specifying BOOLEAN entries of the WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files apply here: 1/ON/TRUE/YES can be used interchangeably to turn the mode on, 0/OFF/FALSE/NO - to turn it off. NoShowHiddenSysFiles=BOOLEAN disables the Show Hidden/System Files check box in the By File Type dialog box so that users will be unable to see any files you don't want them to; NoChangeFileAttrib=BOOLEAN disables the Attributes group of the Properties dialog box and prevents users from changing attributes of files, so that all the files made hidden by you will remain hidden; NoRun=BOOLEAN disables OK button of the Run dialog box and prevents users from running applications in this way (even if the executable file itself is hidden); NoOpen=BOOLEAN prevents users from opening files and running programs via File|Open command or double-click (this also completely disables the association mechanism) NoSaveFMSettings=BOOLEAN prevents users from saving the current settings of the File Manager on exit; NoCloseFileManager=BOOLEAN prevents users from closing the File Manager (with some limitations); NoChangeFileDateTime=BOOLEAN disables OK button on the Change Date/Time dialog and prevents users from modifying these file attributes; NoUninstallStepUp=BOOLEAN prevents users from uninstalling the FM StepUp, i.e. if the user modifies the WINFILE.INI and removes 'FM StepUp=' entry, this entry will be added again by FM StepUp automatically when exiting File Manager and FM StepUp will be loaded during next run of File Manager. To effectively use this feature, you should use it in combination with NoCloseFileManager. NoSaveStepUpSettings=BOOLEAN prevents users from saving the current settings of the FM StepUp on exit; NoCustomizeExecMenu=BOOLEAN prevents users from customizing the Execute Menu of the FM StepUp; NoCustomizeQuickMenu=BOOLEAN prevents users from customizing the Quick Menu of the FM StepUp; NoChangeViewerEditor=BOOLEAN prevents users from changing the default viewer and editor through the Preferences dialog box (so that they won't be able to run undesirable programs even in this way!); NoRunDOSprog=BOOLEAN disables OK button on the Run DOS Program dialog box and prevents users from using this command. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // // 3.
