INTRODUCTION // /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 1.1 About File Manager Toolbar ----------------------------- FM Toolbar is an extender of File Manager for Microsoft(R) Windows(tm) 3.1, 3.11. It provides File Manager with a toolbar, similar to one used in File Manager for Windows for Workgroups(tm). FM Toolbar is a great timesaver. Statistics shows that toolbar for File Manager is one of two main reasons why individual users of Windows 3.1 upgrade to Windows for Workgroups (the other reason is slightly improved performance). FM Toolbar is an alternative, effective and inexpensive way to upgrade your system. FM Toolbar will save you a great deal of time! With FM Toolbar your will work with File Manager easier and faster. Try it - and you won't believe you worked without FM Toolbar before. The way software should be! 1.2. What's new in the current version ---------------------------------- - You can set up your own word instead of 'Toolbar' in the main menu; Ver.1.6 : - A compatibility with NDW problem resolved. - Documentation updated. Ver.1.5 : - New SETUP utility - you can activate/deactivate FM Toolbar whenever you wish; you can quicly take a look at the software without actually installing it onto hard or network disk; etc. - Completely updated documentation; on-line context-sensitive Help; new command 'Register/Unregister'. No changes to previous code made since no bugs were found or reported! Ver.1.0 : The first release of the software. If you have registered any previous version of the FM Toolbar, you can upgrade to the current version FREE. To register your copy of the FM Toolbar you can use the same Registration Number as you used for ver.1.0. 1.3 How to use the documentation -------------------------------- The complete information on the FM Toolbar software, including the description of the installation procedure, how to get updates, how to register your copy, troubleshooting hints, order forms, answers to frequently asked questions, etc., is available in the Windows Help format, file FMTB.HLP. If you have already installed FM Toolbar you can access the information by choosing Toolbar | Help from File Manager's menu. Or, double click the 'FM Toolbar Help' icon in the FMToolbar group created for Program Manager after automatic installation. Or, choose command 'Run' from Program Manager or File Manager main menu, and enter the full name (including complete path) of the FMTB.HLP file. For example, if you have placed the FM Toolbar files into directory TEMP on your hard disk C, enter the following string into the 'Run' dialog box: C:\TEMP\FMTB.HLP and click OK button. Yet another way to view the file is open the directory window with the File Manager and double click filename FMTB.HLP with the mouse. 1.4. THIS IS SHAREWARE: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY ! -------------------------------------------- This is NOT a free or public domain software. This is SHAREWARE, i.e. copyrighted software which you can "try before you buy". Shareware is a great concept and we encourage you to try out File Manager Toolbar and pass along its copies to your friends. You may try the program for the evaluation period of up to 14 days. After that time, you are required to purchase the software through registration or else discontinue its use. (please read the complete text of License agreement in FM Toolbar Help for details). Unlicensed copies of our products are 100% fully functional. We make them this way so that you can have a real look at them, and then decide whether they fit your needs or not. Our entire business depends on your honesty. If you use it, we expect you to pay for it. We feel that if we treat you right, you will treat us right. When you pay for the shareware you like, you are voting with your pocketbook, and will encourage us to bring you more of the same kinds of products. About Registration Reminder: --------------------------- Sometimes when you start or close File Manager, the registration reminder screen is displayed. This is the ONLY difference between registered and unregistered versions of the FM Toolbar (unless you've obtained a newer version of the software from us). In fact, when you register FM Toolbar, we provide you with a unique registration number which can be used to suppress the registration reminder screen. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // // WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU REGISTER File Manager Toolbar ? // 1. The personal Registration Number, allowing you to remove registration reminder and put your name in the About FM Toolbar screen. 2. Disk with the latest version of the FM Toolbar (optional). 3. The privilege to be personally informed about new major releases of the FM Toolbar and other software products from ChaoSoft. 4. FREE upgrades to new versions of the FM Toolbar. 5. INSTALLING File Manager Toolbar // /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Unlike most other Windows applications, FM Toolbar is not a stand-alone program: there is no special executable file you would run to start the FM Toolbar. To use the FM Toolbar software, all you need is properly install it, and it will run automatically every time you run the File Manager. 2.1. Using Setup utility ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FM Toolbar v.1.5 comes with convenient and flexible SETUP utility, you can use it if you want to temporarily activate/deactivate the software or install it onto your hard or network disk for permament use. 2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE ------------------------------------------ If you obtained FM Toolbar software on a diskette or CD-ROM and want to take a look at the FM Toolbar without installing it onto your hard disk, run SETUP.EXE from the FM Toolbar directory on the diskette or CD-ROM and choose button 'Activate' when prompted. - to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box: A:\TOOLBAR\SETUP.EXE (assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy drive) After that run File Manager: there should appear a new item in its main menu: Toolbar (if there is no such an item, the FM Toolbar has not been activated; see below in this file for possible reasons) Of course, be sure that the diskette or CD with FM Toolbar is available during the loading of the File Manager! Now, if you see that FM Toolbar is not what you need, just run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Deactivate' button - your system will forget about FM Toolbar! Otherwise, if you want to give the program more long try and wish to install it onto your hard or network disk, you can choose button 'Install' when SETUP.EXE prompts you. Please see the next section of this file for more information. 2.1.2. Installing on a hard or network disk ------------------------------------------- If you have already placed all the files from the FM Toolbar package on your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the files from an archive), you can just run SETUP.EXE and choose button 'Activate'. If you don't have the FM Toolbar files on the hard disk, choose 'Install' button instead and then enter the path to directory where you want the FM Toolbar be installed. In this case SETUP.EXE will copy all the files to new location and then activate them. In addition, you will be prompted to create a separate program group for FM Toolbar. It's not essential to have such a group, but it can be convenient. Anyway, the last word is yours! 2.1.3. Uninstalling FM Toolbar ----------------------------- To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM Toolbar, you can run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Deactivate' button. If you decide to start using FM Toolbar later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Activate'. Otherwise, to completely remove FM Toolbar from your system, deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove all the files from directory on your hard or network disk where you have installed FM Toolbar. In addition, delete program group 'FMToolbar' from your Program Manager, if your created it during installation. 2.2. Registering your copy of the FM Toolbar ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sometimes FM Toolbar displayes a registration reminder, and the About FM Toolbar screen reads 'Unregistered copy'. If you have registered FM Toolbar and obtained your personal Registration Number from us, you may use it to remove the registration reminder from the screen and put your name in the About FM Toolbar screen: choose Register from the Toolbar menu of File Manager and when a dialog box pops up, enter your name (exactly as it appears in your Registration Acknowledgment) and the Registration Number. Be sure to enter your name EXACTLY as it's written in the Registration Acknowledgment, including all the spaces, punctuation, and entering letters in proper case (upper or lower). If you wish your name to be spelled differently please let us know and we assign you a new registraion number. 2.3. Manual installation/deinstallation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If the automatic installation fails by any reason, you can install the FM Toolbar manually: 1. Create a directory on a hard disk for FM Toolbar, say C:\TOOLBAR, and copy all the files from the FM Toolbar installation disk into that directory. If you obtained the FM Toolbar files compressed in an archive, extract all the files from it. 2. Close File Manager. 3. Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS directory on your hard disk (or directory you specified when installing Windows). Please note: the file you need is WINFILE.INI, not WIN.INI. Find the section [AddOns] in this file and place the following string right after the string [AddOns]: FM Toolbar=C:\TOOLBAR\FMTB.DLL (or specify the directory you copied the FM Toolbar's files in, if other than TOOLBAR). The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like this: ... [AddOns] FM Toolbar=C:\TOOLBAR\FMTB.DLL ... (... means other lines of the file). Save the file. 4. Run File Manager. You shell find new menu item, Toolbar, among the other items of the File Manager's main menu, if the installation has been completed successfully. If you cannot see the Toolbar item in the main menu of the File Manager, an error has occurred. Please verify that you have done all the steps above, and, particularly, specified correct path in the [AddOns] section of the WINFILE.INI file. Make sure also that the files have not been corrupted when copying them onto your hard disk (do they have the same sizes as the files on the installation diskette?) To manually uninstall FM Toolbar: 1. Close File Manger and remove string 'FM Toolbar=...' from WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example). After that you can restart File Manager: FM Toolbar will not be loaded. If you decide later to start using FM Toolbar again, place the string 'FM Toolbar=...' specifying complete DOS path to FMTB.DLL file, in the [AddOn] section of the WINFILE.INI file. The following steps should be completed only if you wish to remove the FM Toolbar from your system permanently: 2. Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where you installed FM Toolbar in; 3. Delete program group 'FMToolbar' in the Program manager window, if there is one. We hope you'll change your mind! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // // 3.
