**************** Gateway 2 The Mauve Forest ******************* The GUI (Gateway User's International) Group Magazine! I believe that this is the first ever User's Group Magazine in true (digital paper) format. We will attempt to publish on a quarterly basis. Gateway 2000 has generously arranged for the printing and mailing of a quarterly paper version of the magazine that is sent to those members who have supplied us with a (postal) address and zip-code. However, if enough acceptable copy is received to justify it, we may publish supplemental digital versions between the quarterly paper editions. This electronic version has been published with consideration given to the possibility of it being run on a variety of platforms, so aesthetics have suffered a bit in order to allow for viewing at color levels from monochrome up to the monitor/driver combinations that allow 16.7 million colors. However, I strongly recommend using 800x600 and 256 colors (or more) for best viewing. Also, the photos in the magazine will not view well unless you are using a larger palette than the 256 colors. GUI-4.ZIP expands into this READ1ST file, a text file from Micro Firmware explaining the PhoenixBIOS upgrade and the GW2TMF-4.EXE file. After unzipping into a directory, just RUN the resulting GW2TMF-4.EXE file under Windows, and the magazine will appear on your screen. While you may print the magazine, it does require a LARGE TEMP file that it uses as a print buffer, so be sure you have available disk space. (In one earlier test run, the temp file was 23 Megs. Of course, it automatically deletes after the printing is finished.) The file also takes a long time to print. For both those reasons, you may find that printing a few pages at a time works best. However, should you have any problems printing the large graphics, Common Ground has allowed me to distribute a "Special User's Group" viewer to GUI members. This viewer allows for Zoom/Unzoom, Thumbnail viewing, a "grabber" that allows for easy scrolling and Cut/Paste. Using Cut/Paste, you can transfer any articles you choose into your favorite Windows word processing program. That will facilitate an easy printing solution for those with dot matrix printers, or those who want a quick "text only" print out. To receive the User's Group Viewer, you must first be a member of the GUI Group. Then, you need to send two formatted 3 1/2" disks (1.44 Meg-High Density), with appropriate return postage attached to an enclosed disk mailer, to: Jack Ballinger #16 94th Street Brooklyn, NY 11209 Screen viewing with the attached mini-viewer requires you to use the PAGE (up & down) keys to scroll. There is a drop down menu at the top of the mini-viewer that will also allow you to go to a specific page, or you can use the Ctrl key with the PAGE keys to move page by page. Common Ground is trying to come up with a way to do away with the scrolling, but no solution is currently available that will allow for the standard magazine format. As we have been fortunate enough to keep the GUI Group going as a dues free group, while keeping the magazine free of paid advertisements, I would be remiss if I didn't give some thanks to the folks who have made that possible. Our thanks are extended to Gateway 2000 for assisting the GUI Group by paying for the printing and mailing costs for the hard copy of the magazine and the use of their BBS to help in distribution of the digital paper version. No Hands Software gets a GUI thank you for their great Common Ground (digital paper) program that formats this magazine for electronic transmission/viewing, and their generosity in producing, and allowing the free distribution of, the Special User's Group Viewer. And, finally, the folks without whom GUI would never have gotten past the idea stage. Cyndy Lloyd, Nelia Lyda, Walter Harvey, Bob Nick, Mike Friedman, Phil Teitelbaum, Mike Goetz, Louis Forte', Steve Gavey, Fred Warshaw, Bob Smiejec and Mike Tichon for their help in proof reading and recruiting; Walter Arnold for his beautiful cover art; Steve Asakawa for maintaining and updating the member database and the dozen or so other members who make up the "core group" and offer so much assistance both in the publication of the magazine and, equally important, by providing tech help on the various services. Finally, kudos to the various members who have submitted articles to the magazine. If you have comments, suggestions or wish to submit an article please E-Mail me at: guijackb@phantom.com To join the GUI Group, just send me your (postal) mailing address and zip-code. Thanks, Jack Ballinger, Editor guijackb@phantom.com A Proud Member of the GUI Group! No dues! No ads! Accept no imitations. Join the only recognized Gateway User's Group!
