MOVENAME Version 1.1, 12 July 1994 Copyright (c) July 1994 by Jack Chandler MOVNAM11.EXE is a small utility program that will assist you in correcting the ambiguity of place name level assignments found in files you receive as GEDCOM and or download from the Ancestral File in GEDCOM format. We have all seen that the Ancestral File contributions are from many sources and not all use the same conventions to select the level for the City, County, State, Country when submitting data. The process of correcting these entries can be tremendous and at time almost as long as a standard keyboard input of the data. MOVNAM11 will allow you to do the following in a database created from an Ancestral File or other sources that exhibit those properties. 1. Change the name, spelling, or name format of any name in any place field for the entire database. 2. Move a name from one place field to another with a corresponding name change, spelling correction, or name format change during the move. 3. If a name is changed and the new name is not in the NAME2.DAT file, then MOVNAM11 will add it. 4. MOVNAM11 makes these changes on a global basis with no regard to RIN# and/or event type with the following exception: Options are provided to block any event fields from the selected moves. This will allow you to retain your place name field alignment for burials and christening in fields different than the birth and death by blocking these events on the menu. To move/change place names for the Christening and/or Burials then block the Birth and Death events. MOVNAM11 will not: 1. Change the case of a name that is already existing in the NAME2.DAT file. 2. Be selective in RIN# and/or event type name corrections. MOVNAM will make a global change for the entire database of the names selected. 3. Modify or change any Surname or Given name in those name fields nor the names in the Temple fields for ordinations. MOVNAM11 will ask for the location of your PAF database. MOVNAM11 does not have to be in that location but can be run from any drive/ directory. MOVNAM11 will then ask you to select the place name field you wish to move names from and the place name field you wish to move names to. The same field/level can entered in both places if you are only changing the name or the spelling. The two entries should be entered separated by a comma with no space in between. Examples: 2,3 will move the selected name from field 2 to field 3. 3,3 will not change the field but will put the selected new name in the same field. Next MOVNAM11 will ask you for the names you want to move or to change. As with the fields, these should be entered separated by a comma with no spaces. Examples: Ariz.,Arizona will change the abbreviation to the full state name. Clark Co.,Clark will change delete the term Co. from the entry. Remember that these are made on a GLOBAL basis so any entry of the name on the left of the comma found in the level on the left of the comma in the field entry will be changed and/or moved to the name and location on the right of the comma. These moves can be made from/to any level. That is, you can move 4,1 or 3,4 with equal results. The name is erased from the field it is moved from but is not deleted from the NAME2.DAT file. As always, when working with a utility of this type, BE SURE YOU HAVE a good BACKUP of your data files. I would recommend that this utility be used on any GEDCOM information prior to inputing the data into your main database. Input the GEDCOM to a separate subdirectory to correct it with MOVNAM11. Use PLACLST1 to identify the place names needing changed and/or moved. Clean up the corrected data with NAMCLN20, NOTCLN12, and RECLAM32 prior to merging with your existing data. Again, HAVE a GOOD BACKUP prior to using MOVNAM11. I will accept no responsibility for damaged data or failure of this program to operate properly. MOVNAM11 has not been extensively tested but has been used for several days on my own data. If you find any problems and/or have suggestions for enhancement please direct your comments to me at the address below or on GEnie to J.CHANDLER2 or on the Fido Net Genealogy Software Echo. No registration is required, but any contributions of $5.00 or less will be greatly appreciated. If you request a disk by US Mail, then please send a formated disk, addressed disk mailer, and return postage with your contribution. If you do not send a disk/mailer then send $5.00 plus $2.00 postage & handling and state your disk size. Have fun. Jack J. Chandler 812 Vermillion Dr. Henderson, NV 89015 ADDENDUM to MOVNAM11.TXT 11 November 1994 MOVNAM20.EXE Move Name has been upgraded to offer the option of inserting the missing name of a County when both the City and State are known and already entered in their proper levels. Requirements are that the Counties are entered in either place level 2 or 3 and that the City name be in the place level immediately preceding the county name level and that the State name be in the place level immediately following the county name level. It is best to insure that county levels have been moved to level 2 or 3 and that the City and State names are in the appropriate levels prior to inserting county names. If you are using level 3 for county names for Christening and Burials and level 2 for Birth and Death then complete the county name insertions in two separate passes. Both City name and State named _must_ be in the NAME2.DAT file and both must be entered into the proper place level in the Individual record or Marriage record. The county level may or may not contain a name. If the county level is empty, then the requested county name is entered. If the county name level already contains the requested county name, then that event is bypassed and the next event place levels are checked. If the county name level contains a name other than the requested county name, then the option to bypass or to replace the existing name is offered. If either the City or the State name is not found in the NAME2.DAT file, then the county name entry will not be made. If the desired County name is not found in the NAME2.DAT file, it will be added if both the City name and the State name are found in the file. An initial query of database location is followed by the initial menu offering the choice of: 1> Move names between levels. 2> Insert a missing County Name. 3> Quit Selection on this menu is by the number. Selecting option 2> will then prompt you for the City name, County name, and State name. This will be followed by a query for the place level of your counties. Counties must be in place level 2 or place level 3 and the missing county level must be surrounded by a City name and a State name. Following the entry of the City, County, and State names you have the option: 1> Bypass if a county name exists. 2> Overwrite an existing county name. 3> Ask prior to bypassing or overwriting. If option 1> is selected and a county name is already entered in the event place, then that event is automatically bypassed. If option 2> is selected and a county name is already entered in the event place, then the existing county name is automatically overwritten with the desired county name. If option 3> is selected and a county name is already entered in the event place, then you will be queried on whether to bypass or overwrite the existing name. All these options are completed on a global basis. None can be done on only a selected number of RIN/MRIN numbers. Care must be taken that names are not moved that are not intended for the move, or that a county name is not inserted in those instances in which two cities within a single state are located in two separate counties unless the exact city location is known. It is suggested that option 1> be used first to properly align your place names prior to using option 2> to insert County names. The most convenient method of locating the desired names to move or counties to be inserted is by running PLACLST and noting a selection of misplaced names and missing county names. When moving names if the level to which the name is being moved is not empty the name residing in that level will be overwritten. It is mandatory that when moving names to the right, i.e. to a greater place level, that the higher level name be moved first. That is, move the State name from 2 to 3 prior to moving a county name from 1 to 2. Or move a country name from 3 to 4 prior to moving a state or county name from 2 to 3. After completion of inserting a county name or moving a group of names you the following prompt appears: Do you want to un again or uit If un is selected you are offered: ew or ame database Selection of ew returns you to the database location prompt. At this prompt for another run, pressing will default to the previous database. Selection of ame returns you to the initial menu. All instructions listed for MOVNAM11.EXE apply for the moving of names between place levels.
