IBM today announced that its second beta release for the next version of OS/2*, code-named "Warp," will be available next week. The second beta release offers more productivity enhancing features and a BonusPak with applications in a fast, fun, and easy-to-use environment. The first beta cycle tested performance enhancements and IBM's new PlayAtWill capability. Designed for business, mobile and home PC users, Warp Beta 2 combines the maturity of the OS/2 32-bit operating environment with new features for mobility and quick productivity, such as simplified installation, reduced memory requirements, a floating tool bar, animated icons and a more responsive user interface. The Warp Beta 2 comes with an applications "BonusPak." The BonusPak includes a suite of productivity applications, including IBM's Person-to-Person real-time conferencing software, and integrated access to online services. IBM is making Warp Beta 2 widely available to users who want to subscribe by ordering from IBM's 800 number or by downloading the software from CompuServe as soon as the code is available some time next week. "Warp is loaded with value and is a high performer on notebook PCs, which will broaden OS/2's market appeal to mobile corporate users, small businesses and home offices," said Wally Casey, director of marketing, IBM Personal Software Products division. "With Warp, Windows users will be more productive and current OS/2 users will love the speed and usability improvements." Customer-Driven Usability Warp Beta 2 features numerous usability enhancements, including: * Easy Installation: At set-up, users select "easy install" and OS/2 automatically handles the complete installation, identifying the hardware and configuring it to meet specifications. Experienced users can select an advanced install that provides customization ability. * New Look & Feel: In Beta 2, the user interface, or OS/2 Workplace Shell, features new colorful animated 3-D icons. For example, an animated folder icon confirms visually the status of a folder. When a user opens a folder, the icon opens to show it's active. Updated color and scheme palettes allow users to customize their desktops. * OS/2 LaunchPad: Incorporating the principles of a floating tool bar, "LaunchPad" provides users with single-click access to the applications, folders, printers or other objects they use most. * Improved Usability: A new, graphical tutorial designed for new or advanced users makes it easier than ever to learn OS/2's IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 24 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM capabilities. A new comet cursor was created for mobile users. It leaves a "comet" trail, making it easy to track cursor movement, particularly on LCD screens. More pointer sets allow for cursor enlargement, choice of styles and color selection. Other significant improvements have been made in screen response time, command and window processing and application load time already featured in Beta 1. * PlayAtWill: A new PCMCIA software utility, called PlayAtWill*, provides plug-and-play capabilities today. The utility automatically identifies the type of PCMCIA cards installed, including communications, modem, memory, hard disk and I/O cards, and provides a convenient graphical status on the desktop. BonusPak Applications The Person-to-Person capabilities in the BonusPak include whiteboard data sharing, with multi-user annotation so that up to eight people can share images, text, graphics and application window contents in real time, using different protocols. The new OS/2 version will support Windows ** 3.1, Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups** 3.x base function on Intel 386 and later machines. The code will be available some time next week. Users interested in participating in the Warp Beta 2 program can either call 800-251-2177 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST) for a CD-ROM or diskette version for $14.95 plus tax. IBM is offering the diskette version for the same price to encourage beta users to verify the new compression scheme. Next week, users can also download the beta code from CompuServe's IBM OS/2 FORUM Library (GO OS2BETA) and the IBM OS2BBS (OS2PERF2). IBM DELIVERS MORE PC POWER WITH OS/2 FOR SYMMETRICAL ____________________________________________________ MULTIPROCESSING _______________ NEW YORK, June 28, 1994...IBM today introduced OS/2* for Symmetrical Multiprocessing Version 2.11, a new member of its award-winning 32-bit PC operating system family. OS/2 for SMP provides performance and client/server benefits to users of Intel 486 and Pentium multiprocessor systems while protecting their software investments in applications. OS/2 for SMP offers all the features of OS/2 2.11 and increases performance by distributing application processes or threads among processors to optimize the capabilities of a multiprocessor computer. Industry Standard, Supported by OEMs OS/2 for SMP will be available this summer. Several computer vendors announced support today for OS/2 for SMP, including Advanced Logic Research, AST Research, Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM, Intel, Tricord Systems, VTech, and Wyse Technology. OS/2 for SMP will also be available on future IBM PC-based multiprocessing servers. OS/2 for SMP is consistent with the industry standard Multiprocessor Specification Version 1.1, which means that multiprocessor computers IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 32 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM built on this specification can run OS/2 for SMP without changes to the BIOS, operating system or hardware interfaces. OS/2 for SMP features transparent support of systems with two or more CPUs, increasing raw computing power with a lower memory requirement than any other SMP operating system available today. For multiprocessing-enabled applications, customers will see substantial performance gains with each new processor added to their systems. OS/2 for SMP can support up to 16 processors on a single system. Cost-conscious organizations that want to expand their network resources can reconfigure server systems to handle larger and larger networks, or consolidate the functions of their uniprocessor servers on a single multiprocessor system running OS/2 for SMP. "OS/2 for SMP optimizes Intel-based hardware for enterprise-wide, scalable, mission critical applications," said Kevin Dugan, manager of systems development at the network management center of Cable & Wireless Inc., a $600 million long-distance telephone company based in Vienna, Va. "It is absolutely critical for businesses such as ours because we want to make sure that our systems and software will be able to grow with us as our business needs grow," continued Dugan. "With OS/2 for SMP's scalable performance, we can keep the same operating system and applications as we migrate from desktop workstations to multiprocessor systems. The end result is a substantial savings for us." Ideal Technology for Client/Server Environments Network server and high-end desktop workstation environments will benefit from OS/2 for SMP's scalable performance. Transaction processing and relational database applications on servers as well as compute-intensive applications such as CAD/CAM, forecasting, modeling or simulation programs on workstations will run faster and more efficiently on OS/2 for SMP. For example, when OS/2 for SMP and IBM's relational database manager, DB2/2* Version 1.2, are installed on parallel hardware systems, performance and scalability are significantly improved. Users may expect some query workloads to scale as high as 1.8 to 1.9 on a dual-processor machine. Applications such as Lotus 1-2-3** for OS/2 run faster with the new OS/2 for SMP, which also is supported by networking platforms such as IBM's OS/2 LAN Server 3.01. "Only OS/2 scales the range of computing power, from small notebooks to high-end SMP-enabled computers," said Dan Lautenbach, general manager for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "We've created OS/2 for SMP for the high-end server market where exceptional performance and mission critical reliability are important. Whether an organization adds more microprocessors to its computers or just wants to make the most of its current multiprocessor system, users will see a quantifiable performance boost with OS/2 for SMP." Measurable Performance Gains IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 33 GENERAL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IBM OS/2 for SMP intelligently supervises computing operations and allocates processing resources as necessary, improving processing capabilities. Application processes or threads are automatically dispatched to run on any of the available system processors. The end result is enhanced performance through a load-balanced system. Users can run multiple DOS, Windows** and OS/2 2.1 applications concurrently on a single system and benefit from performance gains. OS/2 for SMP is compatible with existing OS/2 and DOS/Windows applications. Even single-tasking DOS applications benefit, because OS/2's heavy use of threads allows overlap of systems services and application execution. Because multiple processors are dispatched, multiple DOS/Windows virtual machines can run faster with no modification. Native OS/2 applications will exploit OS/2's multithreading capabilities, providing even higher performance gains. In addition, OS/2 for SMP supports applications designed for uniprocessor computers. Power and Performance Available This Summer OS/2 for SMP will be available this summer. It will be supported on hardware from Advanced Logic Research, AST Research, Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM, Tricord Systems, VTech, and Wyse Technology. It is initially available in a U.S. English version only. For customers with a supported SMP-enabled computer, OS/2 for SMP can be ordered in July by calling 800-3IBM-OS2, (800-342-6672), in the U.S. or through local dealers and distributors in other countries. Suggested retail prices are: $395 for the 1-2 processor version, $595 for the 1-7 processor version, and $795 for the 1-16 processor version. Bryce & Associates, Inc. (MBA) has issued Release 1.2 of its "PRIDE" INFORMATION FACTORY, an OS/2 based product for managing information resources and Business Process Re-Engineering (BPR). Included is a new Graphics Facility providing input/output access to the FACTORY's IRM Repository. As analysts and designers draw diagrams and flowcharts, information resources and relationships are automatically recorded in the repository for use by other developers. This approach promotes system integration by sharing and re-using information resources throughout the enterprise. Further, the IRM Repository includes an import/export facility allowing information resources to be used and manipulated by other FACTORY utilities, as well as third party packages (e.g., CASE tools, spreadsheets, DBMS, and other dictionaries/repositories). The Graphics Facility supports a three tiered flowcharting scheme allowing analysts to decompose the structure of an information system from overall System Architecture, to Business Process Flows, to Job Stream Design. Flowcharts use ANSI symbols and include standard templates to quickly draw diagrams. Inputs, outputs, and files are also drawn on the flowcharts, along with vital timing elements for IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 61 ISV OS/2 APPLICATION NEWS processing. Analysts can click on any object on the flowchart and compose text to describe the object using normal text editing functions. Also included with the Graphics Facility are Hierarchy Charts, Indented Lists, Business Function Charts, Organization Charts, and Matrices, all of which interact directly with the IRM Repository. Printed copies of all graphics require a PostScript supported printer. Facilities are also provided to copy graphics to the OS/2 Clipboard for use by other graphics and groupware packages. Release 1.2 also includes a Computer Aided Design (CAD) tool to automatically design and document enterprise-wide systems, complete with business process flows, and software engineering specifications. Based on output specifications supplied by the user, CAD will automatically design an integrated system solution. CAD references the IRM Repository to seek-out existing information resources that can be re-used in the new system, thereby eliminating redundancy and promoting system integration. CAD is also suitable for documenting existing systems. Under OS/2, a user can execute CAD in one session and view the resulting flowcharts in another. This is a powerful tool for Business Process Re-Engineering (BPR) and complements a CASE environment using other application development aids. SPECIFICATIONS MBA's "PRIDE" INFORMATION FACTORY is operational either in a stand-alone environment, or in a client/server LAN environment. The FACTORY requires a 486 based machine (or higher) running OS/2 2.1. A site license is priced at $148K and includes training. The Early Experience Program, which will begin in August and support OS/2*, AS/400* and AIX*, aims to encourage development of TalAE-exploitive tools and applications. This program is designed to help a select group of corporate and ISV developers learn the TalAE programming model and develop an understanding of framework-based development. As Early Experience participants, the developers will receive code, documentation, and training for support of the TalAE on IBM's operating systems. "The Early Experience program offers developers a great opportunity to get a head start in the emerging marketplace for object-oriented applications," said Cliff Reeves, director of object technology, IBM Personal Software Products division. "With the TalAE technology, they can explore an exciting new development environment and start designing innovative new applications, as well as provide us with crucial user feedback." IBM intends to support the Taligent Application Environment on OS/2, AIX, and selected components on OS/400*, beginning in 1995. Users will also be able to access OS/400 data from within TalAE-exploitive applications developed in OS/2 or AIX. An open, portable application system for the enterprise desktop, TalAE will establish the basis for a new software development and deployment standard within the computer industry. Built with a rich, comprehensive set of object-oriented frameworks, it allows developers to program more efficiently by reusing both code and design. The scope of these frameworks spans the spectrum of functionality, including user interface, multimedia, networking, communications and data access programs. Developers can use these frameworks as they are or use them as the foundation from which they can create new frameworks to fit unique application needs. The TalAE is designed to run on 32-bit operating systems, including OS/2, AIX, HP-UX**, PowerOpen**, and future versions of System 7**. Applications that adhere to the TalAE programming model will be source compatible and easily deployed across these environments. Taligent provided IBM and its other investors, Apple and Hewlett-Packard, with the Application Environment reference release in June, when it also introduced the Taligent PEEK (Partners Early Experience Kit) early support program. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 70 OS/2 APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT NEWS Taligent is an independent system software company owned by Apple Computer Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM. Taligent, along with its investors, will license, market and support its software products worldwide. OLE is dead on the Mac (68% of the developers said they won't use OLE and almost 70% said they will use OpenDoc!!!!!). Winning the Mac is a major step toward winning the INTEL-space. WWDC at OpenDoc Survey Analysis This year, one of the strongest messages from the WWDC was OpenDoc. Most everyone on the OpenDoc team felt we succeeded in getting our IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 72 OS/2 APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT NEWS OpenDoc messages to developers. Here to try to quantify that feeling are the results of the OpenDoc team survey. The bottom line: These survey results confirm that we were enormously successful in getting our message to developers. Highlights: o In the overall conference survey, when asked what the two most important take aways from the conference were, almost 70 percent of the people who responded said OpenDoc. By comparison, PowerPC and Copeland were cited in approximately 20 percent of the responses. o 86 percent of the people who responded to the OpenDoc specific survey indicated they intended to build a sample part. o Most developers do not plan to support OLE. (68% said no to OLE support) o Over 60 percent of developers plan to start OpenDoc development now and 20 percent would like to ship at OpenDoc intro. o Edit in place, scripting, source code availability and Windows support were deemed the four most significant features of OpenDoc. DEVELOPER RESPONSE SUMMARIES Development Scheduling 61 percent of the respondents are planning to start development of their OpenDoc part editors and containers 'now'. Here's the breakdown of their responses to when they plan to start OpenDoc development: Now: 61% 6-12 Months: 28% 12-24 Months: 7% 24+ Months: 1% Never: 2% In terms of when their applications would be ready to ship, close to 20 percent responded "at OpenDoc Intro". Here's the breakdown of when they thought they'd ship OpenDoc product: At intro: 18% 6-12 Months: 34% 12-24 Months: 36% 24+ Months: 6% Never: 6% OLE Support Most developers thought they would not incorporate OLE. 68 percent indicated they did not plan to support OLE 2.0. Of those that planned to support OLE, more than half plan to ship within the next 12 months. Those interested in OLE seem to be planning to ship soon. Also, most of these developers appeared to be cross platform developers (As determined by those that highly valued the Windows feature of OpenDoc.) IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 73 OS/2 APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT NEWS Feature Prioritization When asked to rate a number of features of OpenDoc on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is not important and 5 is very important, several categories stood out above the rest as highly important features. Most likely, attendees that were attending OpenDoc sessions on the fifth day of the conference are serious about their interest in OpenDoc. The survey results about adoption rates are most likely biased favorably. Even with a healthy grain of salt, the results are still quite encouraging! There is certainly more analysis we can do with this data. This summary covers most of the descriptive statistics from the survey. The fact is, we have considerable momentum from the WWDC in these attendees minds. OpenDoc Evangelism will work to continue the momentum and hold these developers to their commitments to write and send in sample parts. Please feel free to link or call with questions. For more information on OS/2 Personal, please contact the publisher as indicated in the notice. Tampa Bay, Florida, 17th June, 1994 - International Business Machine's OS/2 has become the operating system of choice for individuals who want more power from their personal computers, and with the number of shipped units recently passing five million, Allen-Hamilton Publishing Corporation felt the time was right to launch a new kind of publication for these users. "We chose a Windows-based hyper-media format because just about everybody who has OS/2 has Windows and DOS installed." explained Mark Hamilton, Senior Editor for OS/2 Personal. "It also enables us to produce a magazine that is user-friendly, easy to read and is less damaging to the environment. We thought about using OS/2's INF format but if we chose this route, we'd eliminate current users of Windows who want to learn more about OS/2 before adopting it as their personal operating system." "Our audience are those who understand the power of OS/2 and also those who want more than Windows has to offer," Hamilton continued, "such as pre-emptive multitasking running more than one program at once," and better protection against data loss. Perhaps a user may wish to operate two or three copies of the same program -- something that is not efficient with Windows on DOS." To be published monthly, OS/2 Personal will offer news and reviews of software and hardware, provide tips, tricks and hints as well as a regular cartoon feature. The publication will also recommend books, review on-line services and report on issues that are important to OS/2 users. OS/2 Personal will publish its first issue on August 1, 1994 and will be available for download from a number of ftp sites around the world, including ftp.cdrom.com in the United States and Demon Internet in London, England; copies will also be available in the OS2USER Forum on CompuServe. This recognition came June 6 during the Software Publishers Association European Conference held in Cannes, France. Ziff-Davis Europe publishes seven information industry magazines for the European market. The Software Excellence Awards are designed to honor the best software products offered in Europe. Person-to-Person was developed by the Networking Software Division's Hursley Laboratory in the United Kingdom. It allows up to eight users in different locations to simultaneously view and annotate anything that can be placed on a workstation, even if the users have different communications protocols and operating systems. Discussions of the material takes place over telephones. The video option allows conference attendees to share stored images or live video in windows on their displays. Ziff-Davis Europe also recognized IBM's OS/2* for Windows 3.1 with it's Grand Technical Excellence Award. Both awards were presented during the four-day conference, which was attended by more than 600 developers, independent software vendors, software support organizations, software publishers and documentation publishers. "I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of IBM," said Scott Bohin, Networking/EMEA brand manager for Person to Person. "Although developed in Hursley, this product is being shipped worldwide and interoperates with Person-to-Person for OS/2. This acknowledgment of Person-to-Person by Ziff-Davis indicates a trust and understanding of IBM's strategy of building a sound base for collaborative working rather than hyping applications built on an inflexible base." IBM OS/2 IS "BEST OF SHOW" AT COMDEX/SPRING, WINDOWS WORLD __________________________________________________________ '94 ___ AUSTIN, Texas, June 1, 1994 . . . IBM's PC software star, OS/2*, won its 40th major award last week at COMDEX/Windows World '94 where the beta of a new version earned the top honor, "Best of Show." The award was presented by BYTE magazine and by show sponsors, The Interface Group, at a ceremony on the show's final day. In bestowing the honor, the editors of BYTE recognized the performance-tuned OS/2 beta for the impact it will have on the industry's future. OS/2 was singled out from more than 1,000 products demonstrated at the show, including offerings from Microsoft, Apple and Lotus Development Corp. "This is a particularly sweet victory for OS/2, coming at the major Windows** show of the year, where Microsoft's Chicago was demonstrated publicly for the first time," said Wally Casey, director of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "We are being recognized for what we are delivering -- a powerful, versatile operating system that can awaken the productivity of a wide range of hardware, from laptops to the biggest servers." The beta program will test a smaller, faster version of OS/2 in response to the needs of the expanding mobile and small business IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 79 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES market. Because it requires only 4 MB, the product will extend the same powerful features delivered by other OS/2 products to a much broader audience -- users with smaller and less powerful computers. "The OS/2 development team continues to deliver on every challenge it faces," said Lois Dimpfel, director, Programming Center, for IBM's PSP division. "What OS/2 will deliver for customers this time is an environment far superior to Windows which provides a practical alternative for the traveling or home worker, as well as for corporate productivity seekers." Like other OS/2 products, the beta will deliver pre-emptive multitasking, advanced 32-bit graphics, potent multimedia support, an object-oriented graphical interface, and the unique ability to run DOS, Windows and OS/2 applications concurrently. The beta boasts an updated interface that is scheduled to include animated icons, superior graphics and an easy dashboard utility. It also features PlayAtWill, which automatically configures and monitors PCMCIA devices in real time. Additional printer, CD ROM and PCMCIA support is included for multimedia and portable users. The OS/2 beta program is open to anyone who would like to subscribe. Interested participants can call (800) 251-2177 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT for a CD-ROM version at a price of $14.95. The code also can be downloaded from the IBM OS2FORUM Library (GO OS2BETA) on CompuServe and the IBM OS2BBS (OS2PERF1). MAY 1994 - COMDEX #42, #43 ____________________________ Background: IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 84 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES The Personal OS/2 beta (OS/2 for Windows Performance Beta 1 Version 2.99) was chosen by BYTE's editors as the overall Best Product at COMDEX in Atlanta at the end of May. Personal OS/2 from IBM, the beta of a 4MB version of OS/2 for Windows that is slated to ship this year, was named "Best of Show" and "Best System/Development Software Category" in BYTE magazine and The Interface Group's" Best of COMDEX/Spring and Windows World '94" award ceremony in Atlanta today. Candidates for the "Best of Show" award were the 12 winners of the individual categories. Personal OS/2 captured the award, surpassing Digital's Alpha microprocessor, Apple's PowerBook 500, and Microsoft's OLE Custom Controls, WinG and Windows NT. The Personal OS/2 Beta also won best of system/development category, beating out Microsoft's Windows NT Workstation, Windows NT, and Chicago, Microsoft's newest version of Windows (not yet released). Beta code normally does not receive such an honor. However, the editors were evidently so impressed with the quality and performance of this most recent version of OS/2 ((to be released officially later this year)) that they bestowed the award anyway, even when faced with offerings from Microsoft. "We were surprised," said Lee Reiswig. "This is the beta test version, and it doesn't contain all the capabilities and exciting parts, but it still managed to get best of show." When presenting the award Jerry Pournelle said it was because of the significant impact this product will have on the future of the industry. Wally Casey, IBM's Director of Marketing, said if you were going to Chicago from here, you have to set your watch back two years. The entire crowd broke out in laughter. 6 JUNE 1994 ZIFF-DAVIS (EUROPE) #41 _____________________________________ Software Excellence Award Grand Award for Technical Excellence Background: At a dinner on 6 June 1994 in Cannes, IBM OS/2 for Windows 3.1 was awarded the top prize in the Ziff Davis Europe Software Excellence Awards. OS/2 for Windows 3.1 won the Grand Technical Excellence Award. The other two finalists in this category were Novell Dos 7 and Stacker 4.0 for Windows and DOS from Stac Electronics. The Ziff-Davis Europe Software Excellence Awards honor the publishers and republishers of the best Software products in the European market. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 85 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES OS/2 for Windows was also entered into the Environment/Desktop category, but lost out to The Norton Desktop 3.0 for Windows. The other finalist in this category was Microsoft Windows NT 3.1. In the 1993 awards, OS/2 Version 2.0 won the Environment/Desktop category, but not the coveted top honor, the Grand Award for Technical Excellence. IBM Person-to-Person for Windows, developed at IBM Hursley in England, was awarded the prize for Best UK Product. (The OS/2 version has been available for some time, and other language versions are also now available.) 31 MAY 1994 PC MAGAZINE (USA) #39 ___________________________________ Editor's Choice Award -- 32-bit Operating System Background: The 31 May 1994 issue of PC Magazine gives OS/2 2.1 the "Editor's Choice" award in its review of the 32-bit Operating Systems on the market. OS/2 beat Windows NT, NextStep, and the various flavors of PC Unix. Now IBM can add the vaunted "Editor's Choice" insignia to the list of prizes in its OS/2 ads. The May 31, 1994 edition compares 32-bit Operating Systems. The key table from the article is as follows: ............................................................ . Suitability to task: . . Win NT OS/2 . . --------- --------- . . Application development Excellent Excellent . . Graphics and multimedia Good Good . . Business productivity Fair Good . . DOS/Windows emulation Excellent Excellent . . Networking/connectivity Good Excellent . ............................................................ A more complete extract from PC Magazine follows: PC MAGAZINE MAY 31, 1994 VOLUME 13 NUMBER 10 pg. 204 EDITORS' CHOICE, OS/2, Version 2.1 "If you're looking for a true 32-bit, multithreaded, multitasking operating system suitable for both desktop and server duty, look no further. OS/2 2.1 delivers a robust platform that offers a user-friendly desktop paradigm, flawless DOS and Microsoft Windows support and excellent connectivity to all classes of computers." IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 86 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES "Buying an advanced OS is like buying a house: You can't do without one, but even the nicest ones force you to live with compromises. Our choice goes to the operating system we feel currently offers the most on the plus side--with the smallest number of drawbacks. "Our Editors' Choice designation goes to IBM's OS/2, Version 2.1. This operating system impressed us with its stability, its true object-oriented GUI interface, and strong DOS and Microsoft Windows emulation. OS/2 is far less hardware-intensive than most of the other reviewed operating systems, running comfortably with 8MB of RAM, even on a 386. This and its low price make it a strong candidate as a corporate desktop standard. "Additional high points include OS/2 2.1's implementation of SOM, a powerful language-independent object model; and REXX, IBM's cross-platform procedures language...." The rest can be obtained from PC Magazine itself. SCO Open Desktop received an honorable mention, with Windows NT receiving a "we were impressed." statement. The other Operating Systems included in the "FACE-OFF" were: - Interactive Unix 4.0, - Nextstep 3.2, - Novell UnixWare 1.1, - Solaris for x86 2.1. 31 MAY 1994 PC WORLD (SPAIN) #38 __________________________________ PC World Special Award Background (from Jose Pedro Moro, IBM PSP Spain): The editors of PC World have voted to give to OS/2 their Special Award. That's how InfoWorld's Product of the Year differs; we give you a chance to tell us and the industry which products made it to the top. In January, we asked 100,000 InfoWorld readers to vote for best products in the software, hardware, and networking categories and1 the top overall product of 1993. The results are in and very interesting. In hardware, the IBM ThinkPad 720C beat the competition; and in both Software and Overall, OS/2 2.1 was the clear winner. For IBM it was a very good year. We have to declare OS/2 the Reigning Champion when it comes to our Product of the Year balloting. Version 2.0 ... won last year's overall category as well. Today's OS/2 both meets expectations and can run comfortably on the average new PC. At one time thought of as the Rodney Dangerfield of computer operating systems, OS/2 is getting plenty of respect from InfoWorld's readers." (InfoWorld Magazine, 28 Mar 94) "How well does an operating system get along with others on the network? The top grade went to OS/2 2.1. In the interoperability tests published in November, OS/2 2.1 provided the broadest native connectivity of all the operating systems tested. Network access integrates easily into the Workplace shell, down to the printer objects." Catapulting to the top of the competitive operating systems category, IBM's OS/2* captured WINDOWS Magazine's "WIN 100 Award." Named one of the best Windows** products of the year, IBM's award-winning, 32-bit operating system beat Windows NT for this year's recognition. The WIN 100 Awards are selected by the editors of WINDOWS Magazine annually, recognizing the top 100 Windows hardware and software products of the year. "IBM's desktop operating system comes of age in a version that provides performance equal to (and in some cases, better than) Windows 3.1 while running Windows applications," said Jake Kirchner, the magazine's executive editor. "It's not surprising that WINDOWS Magazine chose OS/2 2.1 for a WIN 100 Award this year. OS/2 supports Windows 3.0 and 3.1 applications in Standard and Enhanced mode and offers 32-bit processing." Wally Casey, director of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products division noted, "OS/2 has been designed as an integrating platform with capabilities to support DOS/Windows as well as OS/2 applications. OS/2's popularity continues to surge due to strong customer demand, especially with the recent introduction of OS/2 for Windows. By giving OS/2 the WIN 100 Award, the editors of WINDOWS Magazine acknowledge the industry-wide acceptance of OS/2 as the 32-bit operating system of choice, even among Windows users." OS/2, like Windows, is an operating environment for PCs. OS/2, however, not only runs DOS and Windows applications, but it runs several at the same time, and in many cases faster than in Windows. In addition, OS/2 allows users to run the latest 32-bit applications. OS/2 for Windows provides this same capability to users who already own Windows 3.1. JANUARY 1994 BYTE MAGAZINE (USA) #29 ______________________________________ Best Products of 1993 - Byte Award of Excellence Background: (IBM PSP USA Press Release, 16 Feb 1994) OS/2 WINS BYTE MAGAZINE'S 1993 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE February 16, 1994 IBM's award-winning 32-bit PC operating system, has snapped up BYTE Magazine's "1993 Award of Excellence,". OS/2 2.1 was the only software/operating system recognized as one of the three "top vote-getters," sharing the honors with the IBM/Apple/Motorola PowerPC 601 and Intel's Pentium processor. BYTE Magazine's 1993 Editorial Awards, which comprise Awards of Excellence, Merit and Distinction, recognize breakthrough products that set the standards for innovation and price/performance. According to BYTE, of the many computer-related products and technologies that debuted in 1993, only 71 earned the prestigious awards and, of those, only 16 are honored with Awards of Excellence. Jon Udell, BYTE's senior technical editor-at-large, lauded IBM's OS/2. "Running OS/2 2.1 on an 8 MB machine that hasn't a prayer of running Windows NT, I find that it delivers many of the same benefits: robust multithreading and multitasking, a comprehensive 32-bit API, an advanced file system, and support for Windows 3.1 software," Udell said. "Software developers have known for years that OS/2 is a far more productive environment than DOS plus Windows. With the polish and maturity of version 2.1, more and more users are discovering the same advantage." DECEMBER 1993 PC MAGAZINE (UK) #25 ____________________________________ 1993 Technical Innovation Award - Best Desktop Operating System Background (from PSP EMEA press release, 2 December 1993): IBM OS/2 2.1 has won another top industry award. The UK's "PC Magazine" has awarded it the "Best Desktop Operating System" accolade. The judges were trade journalists and product experts from the Ziff-Davis publishing organization. They rated OS/2 2.1 the best Desktop Operating System, beating competitors such as Windows NT 3.1 and MS-DOS 6.0. OS/2 2.1 was also one of the finalists in the overall "Product of the Year category (won by the Intel PCI bus). IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 90 TRADE PRESS NEWS ARTICLES The citation praises OS/2 2.1 for "its ability to run applications from other operating systems ((DOS and Windows)) to a standard that's as good as, if not better than, the native platforms", and calls it "a staggering technical achievement that all this power is actually usable on a 386DX with 6MB of RAM." NOVEMBER 1993 PC/COMPUTING (USA) #23 ______________________________________ MVP (Most Valuable Product) Award - Systems Software Background (IBM PSP US Press Release, 17 Nov 1993): IBM's OS/2 NAMED TOP PC OPERATING SYSTEM LAS VEGAS, Nov. 17... Industry acceptance continues to build for IBM's advanced 32-bit operating system, OS/2. For the second consecutive year at COMDEX, OS/2 was awarded PC/Computing's prestigious Most Valuable Product award in the Systems Software category. OS/2 2.1 was chosen over Windows NT 3.1 and Novell DOS 7.0 for the honor. The publication's December cover story recommended readers try OS/2 2.1 and not "sit around waiting for the next generation operating system. It's here now, and it works great... It is, in short, everything you'd want an operating system to be." "These awards aren't easy to win, and it's particularly pleasing because the team in our Boca Raton lab produced a great product in OS/2 2.0 and won this award last year" said Lee Reiswig, president of IBM's Personal Software Products. "Now they've produced an even greater product in OS/2 2.1 and won again this year against more competition. Congratulations are in order for all of the talented folks at IBM who made OS/2 2.1 MVP 1993." The award was presented during a spectacular ceremony held at Caesar's Palace on the eve of COMDEX. Paul Somerson, PC/Computing editor-in-chief, said "We look for technological innovation and ease-of-use above all else. Products must not only be the best in their category but also address a wide variety of customer needs," he said. "OS/2 has the most attractive user interface available on the PC and it's a true 32-bit, multithreaded operating system." When Al Unser, Jr. crossed the Indianapolis 500 finish line recently, it was IBM's DATABASE 2* OS/2* (DB2/2*) software that had tracked his performance for all 200 laps of the 500-mile race and clocked him in as the winner. This is the first time that the Indy 500 relied on database technology to track all of the statistics involved in this high-speed, high-stakes sporting event. Utilizing DB2/2 -- one of IBM's client/server computing solutions -- running on the IBM Personal System/2* (PS/2*), Indy 500 officials were instantly able to obtain actual times and speeds for each driver at 22 points along the 2.5 mile oval track. The IBM software also was able to record the vital statistics of each car and driver, including time spent off the track in the pit, real-time race positions and time intervals between the race leader and following cars. From each of the 22 points along the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, information was fed into IBM's DB2/2 database via an advanced cabling system embedded under the track. Installed within each car was a transmitter that was activated each time a car passed one of the points. Within a matter of seconds after a car passed a point on the track, DB2/2 queries could generate a report based on the data captured, allowing racing officials to monitor, for example, order and speed of cars during a yellow flag caution period (when speeds are reduced and passing prohibited due to a collision and/or debris on the track). Qualifying Runs For 16 days prior to the actual running of the Indy 500, 50 drivers in 78 cars ran more than 17,000 practice laps, seeking enough speed to earn a race day starting position. Only the fastest 33 drivers in four days of official four-lap qualification runs would compete on race day. During each of the qualifying runs, DB2/2 collected, organized and provided details on each driver's lap times, maximum straight-away speed and average corner speed. Each day, throughout the day, DB2/2 would generate reports that provided each team with details that they could use strategically to improve their performance. "IBM's DB2/2 software ran without a glitch," said Art Graham, director of timing and scoring for the United States Auto Club (USAC), the governing body of the Indianapolis 500. "We depend on IBM's database technology as a fundamental piece of our advanced race information system, which provides accurate and comprehensive car and driver information instantaneously." IBM has been a part of the Indianapolis 500 since 1927, when the company's founder, Thomas J. Watson, leased key punches and tabulators to USAC to track timing and scoring. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 100 MISCELLANEOUS OS/2 NEWS IBM products have also played a big role in the Olympic Games for the last 60 years and have served as official scoring and information systems for the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Tour, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and U.S. Open Tennis. DB2/2 is a 32-bit, OS/2-based relational database management system designed specifically for customers working in a client/server LAN environment who want to take full advantage of IBM's industry-leading database technology. "As an industry leader, we are dedicated to ensuring optimization of our servers for all key operating systems. This alliance with IBM will provide the framework for our continued efforts to support OS/2 on Compaq platforms." OS/2, IBM's 32-bit personal operating system, has won more than 40 industry awards for its industry-leading performance and technology. LAN Server, IBM's powerful multi-platform network operating system, was developed to take advantage of OS/2's rich client/server capabilities. IBM OS/2 Newsletter - Volume 1, Issue 3, June-July, 1994 page 101 MISCELLANEOUS OS/2 NEWS "We are pleased with the customer demand for OS/2 products that is leading hardware companies to take actions like this one by Compaq," said Dan Lautenbach, Assistant General Manager Personal Software, IBM Personal Software Products division. "This partnership gives customers another choice of platforms optimized for OS/2 and LAN Server." IBM OS/2 and LAN Server also will be supported by Compaq Insight Manager, a Windows-based network management tool which helps network administrators more efficiently manage Compaq server environments. Standard on Compaq Proliant and ProSignia servers, Insight Manager allows the server to intelligently monitor itself and its environment and alert the administrator to potential problems or changes in server status. Customers who purchase OS/2 or LAN Server via SmartStart will receive an activation key for Insight Manager and a key for Insight Management Agents for OS/2 at no additional charge. (Agents provide specific information about Compaq servers such as status of disk and memory subsystems, supported security features, and specific health information, such as error logs and temperature.) Future versions and upgrades of OS/2 and LAN Server via SmartStart -- including IBM's planned support for symmetrical multiprocessing -- will be fully supported on Compaq servers and available on SmartStart. Compaq and IBM have been working together to develop platform-specific drivers to support multiprocessing ProLiant servers, and a number of Compaq customers have been participating in a beta program to ensure full compatibility of Compaq products with IBM's future SMP products. CLIENT/SERVER ON THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY (INTERNET) Everyone is talking about the information highway, but how do you sort through the massive amount of data available on Internet? The answer is Gopher. Gopher is a distributed document search and retrieval tool and one of the primary means used to organize and look at information on Internet. Files are organized in menus and placed on Gopher servers, so Gopher clients can access them through a user-friendly interface. IBM now has an Internet gopher server dedicated to IBM Client/Server (C/S) information. Items in the C/S gopher include IBM newsletters (such as this newsletter), C/S product information, case studies (success stories), etc. CUSTOMER ACCESS 1. With a gopher client, the external name is csgopher.gpl.ibm.com (IP address 198.5.4.1). This newsletter can be found in the "Newsletters" menu. 2. Anonymous FTP to csgopher.gpl.ibm.com in THE NEWS directory. The userid is 'anonymous' and no password is required.
