APPENDIX I EDITING INPUT PROMPTS You will notice Vocal-Eyes has several input prompts. This is where you are asked to type specific information. Examples of input prompts would be file name, find string, speech rate, window coordinates, window to switch to, etc. If the prompt is only asking for a single character, you can simply press the character and that is that. However, our emphasis here is for those prompts which require more then one character. In our above examples of input prompts, window to switch to requires only a single key 0 through 9. However, all the others could accept two or more keys. As a simple example, enter review mode and press F for find. When Vocal- Eyes says "Enter pattern to find," type in "Mary had a little lamb" but do not press ENTER. Oops, Mary did not have a lamb, she had a tiger. Well, press the BACKSPACE character until you hear the "l" of lamb. The backspace key will erase each character that it backs up on. Now type "tiger". Oops, Mary doesn't have a tiger, Barb does. So press the left arrow until you hear the M of Mary. Unlike the backspace, the left arrow only moves the cursor but leaves all existing text alone. Once the cursor is on the M of Mary type "Barb". Now press ENTER. even though your cursor was after the b of Barb, the entire line "Barb had a little tiger" was accepted. Of course, Vocal- Eyes beeped at us because it could not find this string on the screen. That's okay, we are not really interested in finding text anyway. Now press F once again. Notice, Vocal-Eyes remembered what we last typed. This is called the default. If the default is what you want simply press the ENTER key. The entire string will remain as it was. However, if you start typing something new, Vocal-Eyes will clear the entire default and allow you to type from scratch. For example, type "test". Those of you who can see will notice as soon as the t of test is typed, the entire default string disappears. Now your string is simply "test". If you were to press ENTER now, this would become the default string. However, what if you made a mistake and wanted the previous string back? Well, if you press the ESCAPE key, Vocal-Eyes will cancel the current setting and forget all your changes. Go ahead and press ESCAPE now. Notice Vocal-Eyes did not beep because it did not try to find anything. You canceled the find. Now press F again. Notice the previous default came back. Now what if you want to change "tiger" back to "lamb"? Well, you can retype the entire line or you can press the right arrow until you are on the t of tiger. Go ahead and try this now. Notice, your default did not simply disappear the way it did before? If your very first keystroke is a right arrow, Vocal-Eyes will not clear the default. If you type any printable character, it will. Now that you are on the t, type "lamb" and press ENTER again. Press F again. Notice our string is not what we wanted? The word lamb is spelled "lambr." The r is left over from the word tiger. Remember, no matter where your cursor is, Vocal-Eyes will accept the entire string. Okay, we are not sure what Barb has, so let's only search for the string "Barb had a". Press the right arrow until you are on the space after the a. What would happen if you press ENTER now? That's right, Vocal-Eyes would accept the entire string. So how about pressing ALT-E? Vocal-Eyes will erase all characters under and to the right of the cursor. Now press enter and the string will be "Barb had a," exactly what we wanted. One last example. Press F to get the default string "Barb had a." What if we wanted to change the name from "Barb" to "Tim?" How about simply retyping it? Well, remember, as soon as you type the T of Tim, the entire string will disappear. This would cause you to retype the entire entry. You could do that but remember, we are trying to make a point here. So, instead of pressing T, start by pressing the right arrow. Therefore, Vocal-Eyes will not clear the string. However, we are not on the B of Barb. To fix this, press the left arrow. This defeated Vocal-Eyes' clear default feature since you started with a right arrow. Now simply type "Tim". Fear not, the rest of the string is still intact. In fact, too much of it. We still have the last b of barb left over. You can verify this by pressing the arrow keys. Make sure the cursor is on the unwanted b and press the DELETE key. Vocal-Eyes has removed the character and pulled all characters to the right one position to the left. Our string is now "Tim had a", exactly what we want. Although this example was done using the Find string, the same can be used for all the other prompts including the speech rates, volume, and even file names. Feel free to practice using these editing commands. We are sure these features will save you keystrokes from time to time.
