DATASTORM TECHNOLOGIES, INC -- TECHNICAL BULLETIN #47 REV. 11/4/94 PRODUCT: PROCOMM PLUS FOR WINDOWS 2.x TOPIC : CALLER ID PROCOMM PLUS for Windows is the first PC communications package to support Caller ID. This document describes how Caller ID works and how to configure PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.x to use it. WHAT IS CALLER ID? Caller ID is a phone service that allows telephony devices, including some modems, to display the originating phone number of any incoming phone call. For example, if someone at the telephone number 314.875.0467 calls you and you have Caller ID, your phone will display 314.875.0467 as the phone rings. This service allows you to identify the number of the person that is calling before you answer the phone. If you have a modem that is equipped with a Caller ID feature, PROCOMM PLUS for Windows 2.x has the ability to accept Caller ID information and display it on your computer screen. In order for you to use Caller ID, the following conditions must be met: The phone company servicing your area must provide Caller ID service. Some phone companies do not yet offer this. You must subscribe to your phone company's Caller ID service. You must have a modem that supports Caller ID. Not all modems support this feature. If you don't know if your modem supports Caller ID, type AT#CID=1 and press from the terminal window of PROCOMM PLUS. If the modem responds with OK, then your modem supports Caller ID. Some modems may use a different command, however. Check the modem's user manual or contact the modem manufacturer to find out if your modem supports Caller ID. You must configure PROCOMM PLUS to recognize Caller ID information. With Caller ID enabled, you have the ability to screen any incoming call (voice, data, or fax). As soon as the phone rings, you will be able to determine the number or name of the person calling (see Creating and editing the Caller ID database, below). Using the ASPECT script language built into PROCOMM PLUS, Caller ID allows you to create a record of caller information anytime the phone rings. See the Windows ASPECT Script Language manual for information on writing ASPECT scripts. CONFIGURING PROCOMM PLUS FOR WINDOWS 2.X TO USE CALLER ID PROCOMM PLUS can automatically configure some modems to use Caller ID. Other modems will require you to complete the following steps: 1. Start PROCOMM PLUS and activate the Current Setup window by clicking on the Setup icon or selecting Setup from the Setup menu. 2. Scroll through the Setup groups until you see the Data Modem/Connection button. Click on it and then select the Caller ID secondary feature button to access the Caller ID settings. 3. If all of the entries in this window are blank, PROCOMM PLUS did not automatically configure itself to use Caller ID. If this is the case, you will need to check your modem's user manual to determine the following information about your modem: The command to enable Caller ID support. The command to disable Caller ID support. The character(s) that your modem uses to prefix Caller ID information as it sends it to the computer. 4. Type the Caller ID enable command from step 3 into the Enable command: field in the Caller ID Setup window. Include an AT before the command and a ^M after the command. For example, a typical enable command is AT#CID=1^M. 5. Type the Caller ID disable command from step 3 into the Disable command: field in the Caller ID Setup window. Include an AT before the command and a ^M after the command. For example, a typical disable command is AT#CID=0^M. 6. Type the Caller ID prefix characters(s) from step 3 into the Caller ID Prefix: field in the Caller ID Setup window. The prefix characters are typically NMBR=. 7. Check the Use Caller ID box to enable Caller ID and click on the OK push-button. 8. Exit the Setup menu and select Initialize Data Modem from the Online menu. CREATING AND EDITING THE CALLER ID DATABASE With Caller ID enabled, the phone number of any incoming call will be displayed, as the phone rings, at the bottom of the PROCOMM PLUS terminal screen on the Status Line. PROCOMM PLUS also offers the option of having a name displayed on the Status Line instead of a phone number. To see names instead of phone numbers, follow these steps: 1. Activate the Caller ID Setup window. 2. Select [Create] from the DataBase File: list box. 3. A new window will appear that allows you to specify a name for your Caller ID database file. Enter any name that you want, then click on the OK push- button. 4. Click on the Edit push-button to edit your Caller ID database file. 5. Click on the Add push-button to add a new entry. 6. Enter a phone number as it appears when it is displayed by the Caller ID feature on the Status Line. 7. Enter the name of the person or organization that the phone number corresponds to and click on the OK button. 8. When you are finished adding entries, click on the OK push-button in the Edit Caller ID DataBase window. 9. Click on the Setup window's OK push-button.
