TESTCOM Serial Tester V.1.2 (DOS) TESTCOM can measure the performance of any asynchronous serial links, such as: - serial port adapters - modem links - serial ISDN adapter links - system performance bottelnecks This gives you a tool, to optimize serial communications throughput AND connect time charges or to localize sources of bottlenecks or communications errors. TESTCOM doesn't find the errors itself, it just gives you the tool you need to localize them or to measure the maximum speed. The only thing you need to use TESTCOM is the file TESTCOM.EXE, a serial link and/or a loop connector. The quickest way to do something meaningful with TESTCOM is the following: Take an isolated wire and short the transmit line TxD to RxD and the flow control line RTS to CTS at your PC's com port. On 9-pin connectors this is pin 2-3 and 7-8. On 25-pin connectors it is pin 2-3 and 4-5. Now run TESTCOM: TESTCOM (with no parameter, to see a short help screen) TESTCOM 115200 COM1 (to test COM1 at default IRQ4) This measures the maximum full duplex performance of your serial port in the given environement. It is calculated in characters received per seconds (cps). TESTCOM is very fast. It can run at more than 30'000 cps on a 486DX/50 in full duplex mode. This is only one simple application of TESTCOM, there are many more things you can test with TESTCOM. TESTCOM will not run on XT. It is a 80186 compiled version and runs on 286 CPUs or better. A 486 version is available. A german version is also available. The V.24 (RS232) interface is a platform independent international standard. This saves your investments into communications equipements. Serial ports will therefore continue to be important interfaces in the next years. If you plan to use this software, you must read the Textfile REGISTER.TXT and agree to the licensing conditions indicated in the file LICENCE.TXT. New versions of TESTCOM are available on CompuServe for retrieval in Lib 2 (Comm Utilities) of the PC communications forum (GO PCCOM). Online registration is also possible: GO SWREG and register items 4699 (Home) or 4700 (Business).
