Features: - Internal editor, text viewer, binary viewer - Internal .GIF viewer, .FLI and .WAV player - PKZIP V2 support - null modem file transfer - format, pack/unpack, change attributes, copy/dir copy, delete, rename, make/remove dir, move/dir move, append, print, sort. DEFINITELY READ "README.1ST" (coming with this package) AND THIS USER'S MANUAL TO AVOID ANY LOSS OF DATA OR FAILED FUNCTION. !!! I M P O R T A N T !!! THIS PROGRAM IS A PRODUCT FOR PROFESSIONALS. IT IS RECOMMENDED TO USE THIS SOFTWARE ONLY IF YOU ARE AN ADVANCED DOS USER AND KNOW THE BASICS OF COMMAND LINE FILE HANDLING UNDER TRUE DOS. AS THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS TO INCREASE SPEED BY DISABLING PROMPTS, THIS PRODUCT IS JUST TOO DANGEROUS TO BE USED BY BEGINNERS. 1. How AFP works ----------------------------------------------------------------------- AFP has a TWO TREE DISPLAY (SOURCE TREE and TARGET TREE). You are free to select any directory, on any drive, to show the contents on one or both tree displays. From within a tree display, you select file and directory to work and choose a command to be processed on the selected entry. The source tree is always the one where the highlight bar is. Moving the highlight bar to the opposite tree means switching source and target. If a command requires a target specification, the current target tree is the default. In other words: By choosing a target tree you select the destination for a file activity such as COPY, MOVE etc. Even though this sounds a little confusing, I'm sure you will find it very useful after a while. While most commands effect the source directory only (such as elete, iew etc.), others affect the target directory (such as opy etc.), or both (such as Mve etc.). Make sure that you have defined the target before you select a command that will affect the target directory. NOTE: Those commands that affect the target directory appear in . 2. Installation ----------------------------------------------------------------------- By running the AFP3xx.EXE file, you have already decompressed the AFP package. You will now find the following files: README.1ST - Very important information. Read this FIRST ! This file includes detailed info on system requirements and system settings. README.GER - README.1ST (German) AERROR.HLP - This error list is required to display detailed error messages. AFP.CFG - This is the configuration file of AFP for you to define default settings. AFP.COL - This color file (user defined colors) will be used if you define "BACKGROUND COLOR = -1" in AFP.CFG. Feel free to change the colors for a personal color palette. The default colors are defined for using notebooks or monochrome monitors. AFP.EXE - Executable file. AFP.ICO - Windows ICON for AFP. Combine the AFP.PIF file with this ICON to run AFP under Windows. AFP.TXT - This manual. AFP.GER - German manual. AFP.PIF - Windows PIF file for AFP. Make sure you have the right PATH to AFP.EXE in this .PIF file. Even though you are free to choose any name for your directories it is recommended to use a subdirectory of a directory named ATEC to store the files: C:\ATEC\AFP You will find this recommended directory as the default within this manual. 3. Configuration ----------------------------------------------------------------------- AFP.CFG is the configuartion file used by AFP. It has a certain form and style that may not be changed. In generell a given description is followed by an equal sign, which is followed by a parameter. The parameter column is the one you may change. During an AFP session you can always change the configuartion by selecting the Confi button. But before you start running AFP you should make sure that the "Standard editor" is set correct. Choose an editor you like and change this line in the AFP.CFG file. 4. AFP.CFG ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Before you start working with AFP, check/change the AFP.CFG file: (use your favorite ASCII EDITOR to edit the AFP.CFG file) - Screen saver [0..3600 sec.] = 300 0 turns off the screen saver; any other value is time, in seconds, before the screen gets blanked after no keyboard activity. - Mouse support = ON Turn OFF if no mouse is required or used. - Screen background color [-1..5] = 1 -1 = User defined colors (see AFP.COL) 0 = Black background 1 = White background 2 = Blue background 3 = Light Gray background 4 = Gray background 5 = Black background NOTE: If you choose -1, AFP will read the AFP.COL to use your preselected colors. You are free to change the color settings in AFP.COL, to create your personal palette, with your favorite colors. - Auto unselect = ON Turn OFF if you like entries to stay selected after an action. - Smooth scroll = OFF Overwrite screen instead of clearing the screen; Smooth scroll is a little slower but therefore it is more smooth. - Prompt before quit = OFF - Standard editor = Select your favorite editor here. Leave blank for ATEC internal editor. - Standard viewer = Select your favorite text viewer here; OR Leave blank for internal viewer. - Overwrite warning [-1:OFF; 0:Newer; 1:ON] = 1 With this option set to: -1: you will not be prompted before AFP overwrites a file. 0: you will only be prompted if a newer file will be overwritten. 1: you will always be prompted before AFP overwrites a file. - Prompt before action [OFF:Danger!] = ON With this option enabled, you will be prompted for you to OK (confirm) your choice, before launching a command. - Display any action [OFF:Fast] = ON With this option enabled, you will see any file activity on the main screen; otherwise, you will only see information in the status line. - Secure DELETE [OFF:Fast] = OFF If you turn this option ON, files will be overwritten with nonsense characters before they get deleted. NOTE: You should only turn on this option, temporarily, as it will dramatically reduce the performance of the deleting files. - Check free disk space before COPY = ON With this option ON, AFP will check the disk space on the target drive before a copy command will be processed. NOTE: This will prevent you from copying files, watching the progress bar and getting an #39 error message before the copy command is complete. - Keep file attributes with COPY = ON If you turn this option OFF, AFP will set the time and date of copied files to the current day -- instead of using the original file time/date. - Show error description [OFF: Fast] = ON With this option ON, you will get an error description instead of a simple error number, if any error occurs. - Transfer COM port [0..4] = 0 Define the COM port for null modem file transfer. NOTE: If you have no null modem cable, set this value to "0". - Baud rate (SEND) [1200..9600..115000] = 38400 Baud rate for sending files to remote PC. NOTE: Must be same rate as the RECEIVE rate on the remote PC. - Baud rate (RECEIVE) [1200..9600..115000] = 19200 Baud rate for receiving files to remote PC. NOTE: Must be same rate as the SEND rate on the remote PC. - Use internal ZIP feature (V2.0) = ON Use internal PKZIP V2 instead of external PKZIP. - Hexedit in int. viewer [ON: Danger!] = ON Supports changing bytes in BINARY display of internal viewer. Please use with EXTREME CAUTION! - ASU V7.0 dir. (ACD.EXE) = C:\ATEC\ASU Directory of ATEC-Software-Utilities V7 (ASU). NOTE: AFP will use the ACD-x.LOG files of ACD.EXE, if any. NOTE: If you do not have the ASU package - order it !, no, seriously, leave this line blank. For information on the ASU programs, please contact the author at CIS 100024,1436. By default, AFP use the standard editor and standard viewer to dit and iew files. However you can force AFP to use different editors and viewers with specific file extensions: +-------+-----------+-----------+ Ext Editor Viewer +-------+-----------+-----------+ .FAX = = ZVIEW .TGA = = SVGA .TIF = = SVGA .PCX = = SVGA .BMP = = SVGA .JPG = = CSHOW EXP: If you dit a .FAX file, AFP will try to use the standard editor, but if you iew the file, AFP will call ZVIEW to display it. NOTE: In this case, ZVIEW must be an external command. 5. Getting started, finally ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Run AFP.EXE BETA VERSION: The first thing you will see is the "BETA advice" screen. After a 3 second delay (or keypress), AFP will load. COMMERCIAL VERSION: - If you have not yet created an ID file, you will get the "ID input" screen. Enter your USER NAME and USER ID so that AFP can create a new ID file. (You will get your AFP ID with your purchased copy of AFP). - If you have already created an ID file, AFP will load. 6. Main screen ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The main screen is the control center and the heart of AFP. Some parts of AFP will run in text mode (special external commands, internal editor and viewer) but you will always return to the graphic mode afterwards. AFP is a real WYSIWYG application . There is no pull-down-menu. All you can do is, What You See on the screen. In other words: AFP will be controlled from within this main screen by using the button line commands. If there is a status or error message, it will appear in the status line until you press the next key. For user prompts, there will be no additional windows on the screen - simply answer the questions in the prompt line. Headline -> ATEC-File-Prof --------------------------------------------- Description -> Name Ext Date Name Ext Date --------------------------------------------- Main screen -> xxx xxx xxx ### xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx ### xxx xxx xxx ... ### xxx xxx xxx ### xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx ### xxx xxx xxx --------------------------------------------- Button line -> ### ### ### ### ### ### ### ### ### ### ### Button line -> ### ### ### ### ### ### ### ### ### ### ### --------------------------------------------- Status/Prompt -> --------------------------------------------- Footline -> ATEC-Info-Center While the headline and footline stay fixed --except Date/Time-- everything else can change depending on the current action. If you press the while the is on top of an entry, this will elect or nselect this entry. 6.2. Button Line ----------------------------------------------------------------------- While the and buttons represent actions on selected entries, the buttons represent independent actions. If you do not select an entry but choose a button, the current entry (highlight bar) will be the default. You can select a button by pressing the --highlighted -- or by choosing a button with your . 6.3. Changing trees and directories ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Changing trees and directories is one of the most powerful features in AFP. Now, you really gain control of this program! To toggle source and target drive, press or use the and keys to move the highlight bar. Within the directory structure, <.> brings you to the parent directory and <\> brings you to the root directory, while or on a directory entry takes you into that directory. The ".." within a directory equals the parent directory. So, if you select ".." and press or you will also get to the parent directory. 7. Buttons ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 7.1. Pck ----------------------------------------------------------------------- With this command, you add selected files to a compressed file in the target directory. You will be prompted to select one of the following compression techniques: .ZIP, .ARJ, .ARC, .LZH or .RAR and for a new filename (automatic extension). Unpac ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This is one of the most powerful commands in AFP. With this command you simply unpack compressed files into automatically created subdirectories in the target directory. The name of the newly created directories will be set automatically, based on the name of the compressed file. Afterwards you can jump into the new directory and check the file contents. ename or mve (DirMo<->) the new directory as you like. NOTE: If you do not want to be prompted before you Quit, change the settings in your AFP.CFG ! 7.18. emove ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This is another powerful command - but it is VERY DANGEROUS. With this command, you can remove directories, including their subdirectories and subfiles - with a single keystroke. Even if you will be prompted to confirm the deleting of the selected directories, you will NOT be prompted for confirmation on subdirectories or subfiles. Again, use with EXTREME CAUTION! 7.19. elect ----------------------------------------------------------------------- elect all entries matching a specific file specification.
