An example would be > the ULTRINIT driver for the GUS that simply resets the GUS then unloads > itself. > Thanks. The two config.sys drivers CTSB16.SYS and CTMMSYS.SYS are TSRs that chew up a whopping 26K of upper memory. These two are needed to support the dos utilities that come with the SB-16 or the AWE-32. They serve no other useful purpose. The stuff in autoexec.bat like DIAGNOSE.EXE and SB16SET.EXE for the SB-16 and AWE-32 are transient. DIAGNOSE /S inits the card and SB16SET /P sets up your DOS mixer to your favorite saved parameters. They take up no memory once done. If you have an ASP chip (the compression option) you get a third TSR in config.sys, CSP.SYS. This is a 5K driver that enables things like uLAW compression and Q-sound. The AWE-32 has a special utility AWEUTIL.EXE (in autoexec.bat) that inits the EMU chip and sets chorus and reverb in DOS. This is *not* a TSR but also inits and goes away. AWEUTIL does become resident if you execute it a second time to emulate General MIDI in DOS. So, inspite of all the confusion on the subject, if you have a SB-16 W/O the ASP chip you should have no drivers at all in your config.sys and only transient routines to init the card in autoexec.bat. If you add the ASP chip, you have to have a 5K TSR. Since the AWE-32 (not the value edition) comes with the ASP chip, you need CSP.SYS. If you have an AWE-32 and you want to emulate General MIDI, then you have another 20K TSR that can be loaded or unloaded at the command line (or in a bat file) just like MEGAEM for the GUS (works about as badly too :-) Unlike the GUS, though, you can plug in a wavetable MIDI daughterboard that does General MIDI in hardware so you never have to mess with software emulation. -- ======================== Sam eassa@earth.execpc.com ======================== ----------------- Date: Mon, 16 Jan 95 08:37 EET From: Juwan Subject: [INERTIA-TALK:898] Inertia Player support for the Turtle Beach Maui Anyone out there know if there are intentions to directly supposrt the Turtle Beach Maui in upcoming editions of Inertia Player? _ ___ _________ | | \ / | _ _ | __| | | | | | | | | | |____| /_\ |_| |_| |_| ----------------- Date: Mon, 16 Jan 95 15:38 EET From: "F. SB sucks. Let's take your points one at a time. 1. "RAM". You do not need 8megs for it to run. I used it with the stock 512= k=20 for a while and it worked just fine. I upgraded to 2 meg a while ago but=20 that does not add anything unless you want to load multiple .SBKs in=20 Windows or a different, bigger .SBK. 2. "Boot time" is longer only when going into Windows and you decided=20 to use a monster .SBK. It isn't all that long anyway (about 6 seconds for= =20 2Megs). 3. "Drivers". The AWE-32 needs no drivers. None, nada, zip to run. The=20 drivers that the install program puts in the config.sys are only required= =20 for the players that come with the software package (you know, those=20 awsome command line DOS programs to play and record .wav files). The only= =20 driver that is useful is CSP.SYS. It activates the ASP chip for real time= =20 audio compression. That driver is only 5K. You don't need it if you=20 aren't hot and heavy into audio compression stuff. BTW, can the GUS do=20 on the fly compression?. EMM386 works just ducky with tons of room to=20 load the CD-ROM driver and other misc. stuff all in upper memory. 4. "SB sucks". Well, what can I say. No! No! This IS a problem of (some) Intel chipset. I have the same problem, I have an ASUS PVI1.6 motherboard. All motherboards with the same chipset have this error! (=all ASUS PVI motherboards). If you upgrade to an ASUS SP3G, this problem will dissapperar, because it uses an older Intel chipset. (older but better...) You can't do anything, change your motherboard. Or don't use Iplay in graph modes (i do the 2nd one). If somebody can solve this problem, please tell us! Yes, I know the case you are talking about. It was the SB SDK. MediaVison sued and won. Now that we all agree that Creative is run by a bunch of stupid and greedy Marketing slime, how about the Engineers that tried to do a good job designing this thing. Could it be that they did a decent job designing the AWE-32? I'm an Engineer and I have had many cases where I was at odds with Marketing over similar issues. That does not mean that I am slime and my designs are no good? ALL of the SB-s (even AWE32) have ^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ ^^^^^ MODs and S3Ms are digital audio (very similar to .WAV) not FM. I had an AWE32 to test in Pixel's Studio Second reality "SUCK"s on a SB because Future Crew only put SBPro support in the demo. There is NO SB-16 support. So even though I may have a SB-16, I still have to put up with 22kHz sampling. 256x oversampling would have to be incorporated in the demo. It is not. Future Crew obviously did not put good SB support into 2nd Reality because they are GUS users and threw in the SB stuff so that a wider audience could at least have music of some kind. > here (vs. GUS/GUSmax) and the only big difference was in .MOD, > S3M playing. You don't need a Pentium to use Iplay and 256x even with 16 Channel S3Ms. I use it all the time on a 486SX/33 and a SB16. I can even shell out to DOS and do other things while it is playing. > GUS: about 0.5% CPU > good quality (no background noise like HD controllers) > SB-16 is *not* noisy. The SB and SBP have the noise you are talking about. ======================== Sam eassa@earth.execpc.com ======================== ----------------- Date: Tue, 17 Jan 95 21:45 EET From: Dylan Nicolle Subject: [INERTIA-TALK:937] Re: IPlay On Tue, 17 Jan 1995, Mika Peltomaa wrote: > I need Inertia Player for Linux. Depends, Midi sample loading is known to be a bit slow because it has to manage the files to load, how/if to shrink it to fit in GUS memory if there's isn't enough for them all and etc... which is expected. However average sample loading is slow if the program is doing it by poking, DMA is faster but is known to give problems. -Mr. Data / Continuum -----------------
