I saw Akoostik hookah in Ithaca, NY a few weeks ago. They are good, they seem to have a strong Allman Brothers influence. They are from Ohio. The albums are all very good (my personal favorite is Junta). Trouble is, they are so awesome live that even something as well done as Rift (like the crescendo in It's Ice) pales. What I think is the key is that they seem to enjoy themselves so much. That euphoria rubs off on all of us. I don't know how this whole thing got started - well, yeah i do - i mean, sure, phish has dead influence, but they are their own band. it's not fair to compare them to the dead. in my opinion, phish has the same amount of talent in songwriting that the dead has. sure, the dead has been around a lot longer. but the dead's style is more like bluegrass (at least originally). phish's basis is jazz. that's their main influence, and it really shows. phish's musical talent is phenomenal. they can play everything from jazz (magilla) to harder stuff (BBFCFM) to Frank Sinatra style nightclub stuff (Lawn Boy, Satin Doll) to bluegrass/hillbilly (Poor Heart, Nelly Kane, Old Home Place) to Acapella stuff (I Didn't Know, Sweet Adeline) to original instrumental jams (YEM) to flamenco style (Landlady) to happy happy fun listenin' songs (Sparkle, BRTR). Anyways, phish's talent in music and songwriting is amazing. they should not be compared to the dead all the time. they are not the same band. i don't even think they're similar. This guy wasn't kidding. We saw HMH at the Grog and Tankard Sat. night and they were AWESOME. Not too crowded, the band really jammed, and the crowd really got into it. A great bar show to go to, even if you never heard them before. If you've ever listened to any jazz and wondered where you can hear horns that really blow, this is the band to see! Check them out if you get a chance. They are HOokah. It is certainly a rumor. However, if you are looking for the same intensity AND quality of seeing Phish, you WILL be very anxious to check them out. They are all over the East Coast, as I am typing this, and they will be on the East Coast for a SHORT while. I am quite sure that they are playing at Granny Killians tonight for a Valentine's show, which is in Portland, Maine. Call the Hotline to confirm their appearances (614) 231-4889. This is my last comment about Hookah- I have little to no more room left in my little jamming body and soul because of how much room Hookah takes up, along with Phish. Oh my god. They are so special...enough said. take my word for it- a phishhead til the day I day loves ekoostik Hookah that much times 100 million.bye. ------------------------------ From: charbonniert@lucy.merrimack.edu Subject: Just saying hi Date: 13 Feb 95 19:36:24 EST I would just like to say hi to all the Phishers, it's great to know your out there! Ok, now to the good stuff: If you haven't checked out Solar Circus yet, DO IT NOW!!!! I caught them, Native, and Blue Miracle at the Lion's Den down in the Village last night for $6, and let me tell you it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Solar Circus is absolutely amazing. The influences are mainly Dead and Allman Bros. - these guys *jam*. The lead guitarist for Circus had Trey's speed and technical ability. I was just left dumbfounded as Circus jammed tune after tune with infectious grooves. Let me also mention that the keyboardist was also truly outstanding. Very Greggish in his style, the guy doesn't look older than 22. I talked to the bassist for a bit, he said he'd only been with the band for a month. Anyone with more info (members' names, place of origin, etc.) or tapes of live Solar Circus, please drop me a line. Have much to trade, including 130+ hrs. Phish, other assorted stuff, including Circus opening for GSW. Sharin' the groove, Tom ps - Native and Blue Miracle weren't too shabby either - just not as incredible as Circus. ------------------------------ From: mutnick@saturn.rowan.edu Subject: Please help me....
