In order to connect properly with those modems, your modem should have data compression disabled. Each manufacturer accomplishes this a little differently, but here are a few modem command strings which should be appended to the Visual Beeper default (under Setup/Comm Setup): Hayes V-series and Optima: &Q0S36=1S48=128 Megahertz (Rockwell chip): %C0 US Robotics Courier V.32 : &K0S27=32 Practical Peripherals : &Q0 I can't guarantee these will work in all cases, but I have tested VBeep with these types of modems. It's important also to try and set your baud rate to match that of the paging service. ============================================================================== What is Visual Beeper? ====================== Visual Beeper is an easy-to-use program to message your alphanumeric or numeric-only pagers. Rather than purchasing or leasing dedicated paging terminals, or paying for a human dispatcher to send your messages, all you need is a Windows-equipped PC and a modem to send your own. This system is geared towards support teams, repair staffs, or anyone who can take advantage of easy alphanumeric paging. Ever get busy on a project and forget to leave your desk for an important meeting? Let Visual Beeper be your secretary! Simply enter a page for each appointment or event with the Page Later option, setting the page time to a few minutes beforehand, and minimize Visual Beeper to the Windows or OS/2 desktop. At the appropriate time, it will wake up and send your page. Visual Beeper can even remind you of important birthdays or anniversaries! Requirements ============ Microsoft Windows 3.1 or IBM OS/2 2.1 An AT-command-set (Hayes(R) compatible) modem VBRUN300.DLL - available on most BBS's, Compuserve, AOL, etc. Installation ============ Visual Beeper is distributed in one of two forms: VBEEP.ZIP -- complete package, including all DLLs VBEEP_VB.ZIP -- for owners of Visual Basic 3.0 Professional - does not include DLLs or VBXs (significantly smaller) 1) Create a working directory such as C:\BEEPINST 2) Copy the ZIP file to that directory 3) CD \BEEPINST 4) PKUNZIP VBEEP (or VBEEP_VB, depending on which you have) 5) Start Windows and run C:\BEEPINST\SETUP.EXE The setup program will prompt you for a directory such as C:\VBEEP where you want the application installed. It will also create a Windows program group and the appropriate entries for Visual Beeper.
