Setup Cannot Install Some Files - May be related to VER.DLL in your Windows System subdirectory. Rename it VER.DL_ and run Setup again. Colors Are Wrong - May be related to THREED.VBX. If this file is in your Hebrew Calendar subdirectory, try copying it to your Windows System subdirectory. COMMDLG.DLL Warning - This file is being used by another and probably non-obvious program. Enter IGNORE. If problems persist, contact the Calendar Maven. DO NOT contact PsL, Compuserve or anyone else. UPGRADING/UPDATING FROM PREVIOUS VERSIONS ----------------------------------------- This version may be installed directly over previous versions since 7.0. If you are currently using an older version, delete all previous files or install to a new directory. Starting with Version 7.0, the format of HEBCAL.CFG and CITIES.DAT was changed. Older format files will not work properly with newer versions of HEBREW CALENDAR. This version will not overwrite HEBCAL.CFG, PERSONAL.DAT, HEBCAL.TXT or HEBCAL.CRD. UPGRADES AND UPDATES -------------------- An "update" corrects bugs and problems or makes some minor program improvements. An "upgrade" represents the incorporation of major improvements or features. Updates: At present, there are no plans to charge for updates. New versions are regularly posted to America Online (AOL), Compuserve (CIS) and Internet. Look for filenames with format HBCL*.ZIP: AOL: Keyword SOFTWARE CENTER, search JoeMKohn CIS: WINDOWS SHAREWARE Forum, search 74651,116 Internet: ftp oak.oakland.edu SIMTEL/win3/calendar If you prefer, a 3-1/2 inch floppy disk with the latest version may be ordered directly from the Calendar Maven for US$6 (cash, check or money order) to cover shipping and handling. If you have registered HEBREW CALENDAR within the past 60-days, the upgrade is free by contacting the Calendar Maven directly for a new ID number. DO NOT contact PsL or Compuserve. If you registered more than 60-days ago, the upgrade fee is US$10, add US$3 for a disk with the latest version. This payment may be made through the same methods as regular registration, see below. COPYING AND DISTRIBUTION ------------------------ HEBREW CALENDAR is distributed as shareware and may be copied and distributed without fee other than for nominal distribution costs. The distribution files must not be altered in anyway. You may give copies to your friends and any other interested parties. The distribution of the intact, unaltered ZIP file is encouraged! Feel free to upload to your favorite BBS, online service, or Internet FTP. If registered, you may NOT give your personal ID number to anyone. FREE EVALUATION --------------- As shareware, you can evaluate the program free of charge. If you find HEBREW CALENDAR useful and continue to use it, you must register and pay the required fee. LICENSE AND DISCLAIMER ---------------------- HEBREW CALENDAR is licensed for the personal use of the registered user on two computers, for example, work and at home. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of HEBREW CALENDAR, however, the Calendar Maven assumes no liability for errors, problems, or consequences due to its use. The Calendar Maven reserves the right to make changes, corrections and improvements without notification or obligation. HELP ---- The only form of help available within HEBREW CALENDAR are the ABOUT... buttons and the Help panels at the bottom of most of the Windows. The Help panels display context sensitive information relevant to particular controls or the location of the mouse cursor. QUICKDATE --------- QuickDate provides the means for direct date entry, either Common or Hebrew. This can be used for quick date conversion or as a "go-to-date" capability in the Calendars. From the Main Menu, QuickDate provides a miniature Window that can provide a convenient means of converting dates for use in other applications. As an option, QuickDate can be made to "float," staying on top of all other applications, or can be selected to startup immediately upon starting HEBREW CALENDAR. TORAH/HAFTARAH READINGS ----------------------- Shabbat readings are based on the annual schedule defined in Arthur Spier's "The Comprehensive Hebrew Calendar." Readings may be accessed from the Calendar and Readings Window using either the Readings button or clicking the right mouse button on a Saturday or holiday. MODIFYING HOLIDAY DESCRIPTIONS AND TORAH/HAFTARAH READINGS ---------------------------------------------------------- The descriptions and readings are contained in separate text files, HOLIDAYS.DAT and READINGS.DAT, respectively. This allows SKILLED users to make changes to match preferences. Instructions are noted in each file. DO NOT attempt to make changes unless you are familiar with text file formats and editing. Since weekly readings may draw from several different selections, the user is cautioned when any making changes. The most common changes might be to edit selections showing optional Sephardi and Ashkenazi rituals to indicate one's specific preference. ANNIVERSARIES ------------- You may determine both birthday and yahrzeit anniversaries, which have slightly different rules. The birthday feature may be used for general anniversaries as well. COMMON YEARS AND THE GREGORIAN CALENDAR --------------------------------------- As used in HEBREW CALENDAR, the Common dates follow the classic Gregorian calendar devised in 1582. The Gregorian calendar was NOT universally adopted. For example, the United States and United Kingdom did not make the change until 1752. Therefore, users are advised to determine what calendar rules apply in different countries, especially when researching older dates. SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES -------------------- HEBREW CALENDAR uses a new improved algorithm which appears to be accurate to within a minute or two at sea-level. If you find that the sunrise/sunset times are not accurate enough for your requirements, you may need to input the elevation for your location using Location Setup from the Main Menu. Your local elevation above sea-level, can be obtained from local weather bureaus, maps, or airports. With elevation correction, the algorithm should provide sea-level accuracy at your location. SHABBAT CANDLE LIGHTING AND ENDING TIMES ---------------------------------------- HEBREW CALENDAR provides default times of 18 minutes and 45 minutes, respectively, for candle lighting on Friday and the end of Shabbat on Saturday. These defaults may be changed in Preferences from the Main Menu. Recognizing that local customs may vary, these times may be set independently for each location using Location Setup from the Main Menu. For example, Jerusalem candle lighting can be 40 minutes without changing the 18 minute candle lighting in New York City. CITY LIST --------- The city list for sunset setup has been greatly expanded through the help of Joseph Lattke (Gateshead Ltd.). 'Yosef' is affiliated with LUACH (Calendar), a Jewish BBS. You can login to LUACH at 1-201-656-3942. Except as noted, all cities in the supplied database use a default elevation of 0 meters and the default Shabbat times. Jerusalem has a candle lighting time of 40 minutes. Canton, Ohio has an elevation of 366 meters.
