Well, I'm put back into the spotlight this one last time, so who ever is reading this gets to see my final words of wisdom. ;) Anyways, we seem to be keeping up with the deadline, even though some of the issues haven't been 'packed' as much as I had hoped. If the issues remain thin, then we may have no other choice than to go back to a bi-weekly schedule. I'm thinking though -- wouldn't it be better to see Comicunications and CSNsider on a weekly basis? I'm for it! Now's your chance to speak up about it... our address is: ComicBkNet@aol.com, so blast those e-mails out to us or we'll assume you want to see us on a bi-weekly schedule. Have you noticed reviews are really lacking? We need 'em, if you have them, send them our way, we'd love to publish them. Here's something worth while to some of you folks that don't have local access to a bulletin board linked into the great Comic Book Network. If you have a internet address and wish to participate in CBN.. I think I've found a solution. There are a couple things... first, you need to understand how a QWK reader works, once you got that down pat, then we can go into the next stage. Stage two, you need to understand uuencoding and decoding, as that's the way the .QWK packets will be interchanged to and from the network. If this is something you understand and want to try out, drop me e-mail at ed.dukeshire@ecis.haverhill.ma.us and we'll work out the details. There will be some requirements: 1) You must have a mailbox that allows large uuencoded mail. Some of the QWK packets could get rather large. 2) You must also be active in the message bases, we don't want to pass out the .QWKs if you're just going to read them and never converse with the others. Reason being, I still have to manually set up an account for you on my bbs, grab the .QWK packets, then send them to you using my internet address. This could end up being loads of work on my end, so I just want to make sure I'm doing it for a reason. Well, that's it for me. Ryan Brewster is next in line. The headline should have read: "DC Slashes Titles!" Again, the books were: Primal Force New Titans Damage Hawkman Manhunter Justice League Task Force Outsiders Darkstars Deathstroke Fate Rebels These books are believed to be on the list at DC for cancellation. Some may be revamped later. DC And Capital City Settle: [Source: Bob Wayne] 5/5/95 - Paul Levitz, Executive Vice President & Publisher of DC Comics, and Milton Griepp, President of Capital City Distribution, have announced that they have resolved Capital's recent lawsuit against DC Comics. The terms have been kept confidential. Capital will continue to have the right to distribute DC Comics through August shipping. Capital will no longer carry DC Comics beginning in September. Asterix Hits the Big Time: [Source: Thomas K. Bischoff] 5/11/95 - Asterix, star of several graphic novels by European comics creators Goscinni and Uderzo, may star in a new movie by Claude Berri. Malibu Cancels The Strangers: [Source: Comic Buyers' Guide] 5/12/95 - Malibu Comics has cancelled one of its longer-running comic books, The Strangers. Time Warner releases 52 Spirit Stories: [Source: Nicola] 5/11/94 - An interesting new CD-ROM title from Time Warner (of which DC Comics is a subsidiary) contains 52 (perhaps all?) stories of Will Eisner's popular The Spirit comic strip. The MS-DOS CD-ROM contains every Spirit Story since 1947, and retails for $39.95. This is only the first of a possible series. Manhunter's Hunt Ends: [Source: Steven D Grant] 5/12/95 - Steven Grant has announced that issue #12 will conclude DC's retroactive Manhunter maxi-series. Sales were not cited as the reason for the cancellation, though they haven't been great. Manhunter writer Steven Grant felt that he was 'butting his head against a brick wall'. The book simply wasn't working out. Manhunter artist Vince Giarrano had originally intended to leave the title with #11, but was convinced to stay and finish the series. A new Manhunter will meander about in the DC Universe once the series is over, and he won't be Chase Lawler. Marvel Character to be Published by Malibu: [Source: Vantage Picks & News] 5/2/95 - Marvel editor Mark Gruenwald has announced that "One character that Marvel is publishing, Malibu will be publishing by August!". Malibu reps have confirmed, and have said that the character currently has his own book at Marvel, that he'll be moving to the Ultraverse and have his own Malibu book, and that he was created in the 1960's. Price correction for Hardware #29: [Source: DC Comics] 5/12/95 - Milestone Media, an imprint of DC Comics, wishes to notify comics fans and retailers that on May 10, Hardware #29 was shipped with a misprint in the price box. While the price in the price box is $2.50, the book is in fact priced at 99›. Super-Hollywood: [Source: Premiere] 5/5/95 - The following big-screen adaptation of comic book characters are either currently in production or are in discussions: Black Panther, starring Wesley Snipes. Blade, starring Wesley Snipes. Concrete, starring Bill Murray Daredevil, written by Chris Columbus & Carlo Carlei Doom's IV Prophet Elektra, executive produced by Oliver Stone Fantastic Four, directed by Chris Columbus Luke Cage, directed by John Singleton Sgt Rock, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, produced by Joel Silver Superman, produced by Jon Peters Watchmen, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, produced by Joel Silver, with script drafts by Terry Gilliam and Sam Hamm X-Men, produced by Richard Donner Gold Stamps Not Required: [Source: Comic Buyers' Guide] 5/13/95 - Malibu Comics announced that readers will not have to collect the Gold Stamps included with Edge #4 and Star Slammers #5 in order to redeem their Bravura Stamp cards. All rules on the back of the redemption cards still apply, but Edge #4 and Star Slammers #5 stamps do not need to be included. Paul Grant to Babble in Shi: [Source: Paul Grant] 5/6/95 - Paul J. Grant will be writing a text piece on Japanese Martial Arts philosophy for the first issue of Crusade's Shi: Shenryaku. The piece will be based on the 36 Principles of Warfare. Payment for the writing will be donated to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Marvel Stands Defiant: [Source: Vantage Picks & News] 5/2/95 - A Marvel Comics representative has announced that Marvel has no plans to take a price increase. Also, Marvel promises less "collectors" covers on regular books. Such covers will be reserved instead for special books, like Alphas. Harlan Ellison is Politically Incorrect! [Source: Peter David] 5/9/95 - Science Fiction and Comic Book Author Harlan Ellison recently taped an episode of Comedy Central's popular talk show, Politically Incorrect. Politically Incorrect is broadcast weeknights at 11:00pm. Visitor & Timewalker on hiatus: [Source: Derek Santos] 5/11/95 - Timewalker has been put on hiatus as of its July issue, and Visitor #13 will be the last issue of that title for now. Visitor #13 will feature the unmasking of the Visitor. These books' return will depend entirely on fan feedback. Valiant's address is: 275 Seventh Ave., New York, NY 10001. Also, Kevin VanHook will be leaving Bloodshot this summer. Mark Moretti will be taking over, and has some pretty drastic changes in mind. Mark created Valiant's ninja-character Ninjak, and took over Eternal Warrior when VanHook left it. Spider-Man Script Completed: [Source: CBG's Clipping Service (CBG #1123, p52)] 5/13/95 - Big-screen master James Cameron has completed a film script for _The Amazing Spider-Man_. Stan Lee, Spider-Man co-creator, said that the script had fewer dark elements than the Batman movies and and a greater emphasis on "satire and irony". Spider-Man Secrets Revealed: [Source: Comic Buyers' Guide #1123] 5/13/95 - In an interview in a recent issue of Comic Buyers' Guide, former Spider-Man editor (who was _still_ the editor at the time of the interview) revealed some of the more commonly answered questions about the Spider-Man Clone Saga. <<<<>>>> - First off, Ben Reilly is the _real_ Peter Parker, and Peter Parker is the clone. This has been a running theory in fan discussions, but in fact seemed a bit gutsy for Marvel... It was emphasized that this is THE TRUTH. Said Fingeroth, "Peter will not wake up, Aunt May will not come out of the shower." - _One_ will be left in New York to resume his life as Spider-Man. - Ben Reilly's adventures from the past 15 years will be the premise of Spider-Man: The Lost Years, by JM DeMatteis & John Romita, Jr. The story will contain all the events that happened that lead to his being hunted for murder, the woman Ben loved when he was on the road, one of his early meetings with Kaine and some big changes in Kaine's life. __________________________________________________________________________ Legal Stuff: Copyright (c) 1995, Ryan Brewster. It is reproduced in its entirety with the expressed permission of COMIC SHOP NEWS. Don't expect to see Bone joining Team 7 any time soon, but you can expect to see the Image "i" on the cover of each issue of Bone in the near future; Jeff Smith has reached an agreement with Image to have his acclaimed book distributed by Image. As out-of-print back issues of Bone are reprinted, they too will carry the Image logo... SkyBox may not have the Batman Forever card license, but they will make Batman Forever a centerpiece of their SkyCaps relaunch, with both cardboard POGs and brass slammers offered as a part of the line... A GI Joe comic is indeed in the near future -- but will it carry the Dark Horse logo instead of the Image "i"?... Jae Lee is making plans for a second Hellshock limited series; look for it to debut this fall... Superman toys are a little bit nearer to your local toy racks; an agreement looks very likely, and a variety of Superman toys could be available by the end of the year or early '96... Dark Horse will issue a collection of Bryan Talbot's The Tale of One Bad Rat in September to satisfy the high demand for the sellout series... Caliber is launching a new imprint, New Worlds, with the release of Raven Chronicles, a mystery-suspense title that features a team of investigators who specialize in the paranormal (shades of X-Files!)... Magic: The Gathering Fourth Edition starters and boosters sneaked into comic shops in early May; Wizards of the Coast plans to issue a steady supply of the new cards over the next few months. The Fourth Edition boosters contain no land, meaning that new players will have to have a starter set to begin play... Readers can expect to see much closer ties between the Ultraverse and the Marvel Universe this fall... Fox is definitely looking at one X-Files spinoff -- and possibly two -- for next year... The winners of the most recent Xeric Foundation grants (created by Peter Laird to offer financial assistance to self-publishing comic book creators nationwide) are Mike Macropoulos (Super Soul Puddin' Comics), Andy Hartzell (Bread and Circuses), Kris Dresen & Jen Benka (Manya), Randy Reynaldo (Adventure Strip Digest), and Scott Gilbert (It's All True!)... David Finch is taking over as artist on Cyberforce beginning with the fifteenth issue while Marc Silvestri works on a secret project and on the Cybeforce animated series... Widow, the series previously published by Ground Zero Comics, will be moving to London Night, where creator Mike Wolfer will launch a new full-color series in August... Scimidar, RA Jones' creation that was previously published by Eternity Comics, will find a new home at CFD Productions beginning this fall; Jones will write the new series and Tom Derenick will handle the art honors -- and the formerly adult series will be toned down to mature-readers level so that more fans might have access to the book. CSN #414 features a cover feature on ComicsLit Magazine from NMB, as well as more news, the CSN Charts and a special feature on non-superhero comics. The only way to get Comic Shop News is to visit a shop that carries CSN. The publication costs the shops just 10 cents each and is generally free to customers.
