Compatibility between version 2.0 and 2.1 IMPORTANT: UPGRADING from v2.0 to v2.1 Version 2.1 is backward compatible with version 2.0. Users of version 2.0 can install 2.1 in the 2.0 directory and the front end will automatically preserve all information stored in the filing cabinet. This release of GEnie for Windows (v2.1) resolves the 32k size limit of individual messages on the screen but the Filing Cabinet truncates messages over 32K. Contact the GEnie for Windows Support RoundTable staff if you need further details. In the meanwhile, we are currently planning a fix for the 32k message limit in the filing cabinet. 2. Potential problems with 14.4 modems A modem configured for 14.4 (57600) and connecting to a 9600 service may cause problems similar to the flow control problems (see below). While we are investigating this, the best solution is to manually set the speed for 9600. 3. Modem Flow Control Problems: There is a problem related to the modem initialization string settings that may be causing the following types of errors: 1. Can't receive all of your mail because the list hangs (especially if their are many items) 2. Headings for listed mail items are garbled 3. The text of one message shows up in the body of another message 4. Receiving error messages related involving STX in the message 5. Mail sent to others may have lines truncated 6. General Protection Fault with the filing cabinet 7. Non-terminating smoke from the lamp (where the front end is automatically saving all bulletin board messages for you, or your saving many messages to the filing cabinet at once) These errors may be occurring because the modem does not have the software flow control on. Ways to solve the problem would be to: 1. Look at the modem list supplied in the help file 2a. If your modem is on that list, then type the initialization string into the connection preferences 2b. If your modem is not on that list, then look at your modem manual and find the command for initializing software flow control (XON/XOFF) 3. Then try to log on and see if you experience the same problems listed above 4. How to get further assistance For further assistance, navigate to the GEnie for Windows Support RoundTable (page 1455). It is free of the standard connect charges and the support staff can offer you further assistance.
