****************************************************************************** * Q (version 2.0) Copyright (c) 1995 - Matt Page's quicker CD command * * THIS IS SHAREWARE, NOT FREEWARE. READ LICENCE BEFORE USING THIS SOFTWARE! * ****************************************************************************** WHAT IS Q? ========== Q is a quick, convenient alternative to the DOS CD (change directory) command. For example: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ C:\USR\JOHN>cd \windows\word\doc\personal\sally Invalid directory C:\USR\JOHN>cd \windows\word\docs\personal\sally C:\WINDOWS\WORD\DOCS\PERSONAL\SALLY> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ now becomes: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ C:\USR\JOHN>q sally C:\WINDOWS\WORD\DOCS\PERSONAL\SALLY> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Using Q results in: * Less typing - no need to specify long pathnames exactly - quicker change to the new directory * Less hassle - no need to remember how to get to a directory - no need to remember which drive the directory is in - no need to type the directory exactly (see Smart Wildcards) FEATURES ======== * Speed The latest version of Q uses a new compound table structure, with electrifying results - Q now flies like a greased pig! * Smart Wildcards A superset of DOS wildcards - just as wildcards were always meant to be! See "USING Q" below for details. * Multi-drive support Q is multi-drive "aware" and does not work on a per-drive basis. Do you work with two or more drives (e.g. local & network)? No problem, Q jumps straight to the right directory AND the right drive. * Local configuration file All the table information is held in the configuration file Q~TABLE~.CFG This file is now created in the same directory as Q itself. No unnecessary configuration files hanging around in the root directory. USING Q (type Q /? for a summary of usage) ========================================== Before using Q, you need to specify which drives you will be using with Q. For example, if you want to use Q with drives C and F then type: Q /CF Q will scan the specified drives, making a table of all directories on drives C and F. This table is stored in a configuration file called Q~TABLE~.CFG. You are now ready to use Q instead of CD! For example: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ C:\USR\JOHN>q pacman D:\GAMES\PACMAN> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Note: if you create a directory AFTER making the initial directory table, then Q doesn't know about the new directory and will not be able to find it. For example: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ D:\GAMES\PACMAN>mkdir savedpos D:\GAMES\PACMAN>q savedpos No matching subdirectories found - try q /drive(s) D:\GAMES\PACMAN> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tell Q to re-scan all the specified drives as during initialisation. If there is more than one possible directory, these are listed as a simple menu. Type the letter of the directory you want. For example (typing B): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ C:\USR\JOHN>q docs A c:\docs B c:\windows\word\docs C:\WINDOWS\WORD\DOCS> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The directory name(s) can also be specified using Smart Wildcards: * to reduce typing * if you're not sure of the exact directory name * to locate all directories with a similar name These are similar to the DOS wildcards, with symbols: * - matches any number (including zero) of any character ? - matches exactly one occurrence of any character For example: WIN* includes WIN, WINDOWS, WIN31, WINDOWS.OLD etc. PROJ? includes directories PROJ1, PROJ2, PROJS, etc. *.BAK includes all directories ending with ".BAK" However, Q's Smart Wildcards are more powerful than DOS wildcards: * no wildcard is ignored * no restriction on number used For example, comparing Q and DOS wildcards: Q : *TMP* - directories TMP, TMP_ONE, ONE.TMP, PROJTMP1, etc. DOS: *TMP* - ALL names Q : P*3 - directories P3, PACMAN3, PROJECT3, POWER.003, etc. DOS: P*3 - all names starting with "P" Q : A*?E* - includes ARCHIVE, ARCHIVE.OLD, ATE etc. but not AE DOS: A*?E* - all names starting with "A" THIS IS SHAREWARE, NOT FREEWARE. READ THE LICENCE BEFORE USING THIS SOFTWARE! ============================================================================== Many people nowadays choose to think that "shareware" = "freeware", and calmly amass vast collections of software without regard to licence restrictions. "Everyone else does it!" This is the classic circular argument - it can be used to justify anything. "I don't use it regularly!" Then why d'you keep it on you hard disk? ANY unregistered use beyond the 30 day trial is an infringement of the licence. "It's only shareware, it's not proper software!" But it's 'proper' enough for you to want to use it. Besides, you're not being asked to pay the price of a commercially packaged and marketed application. By using this software you are implicitly accepting the terms of the licence, but at the end of the day, the decision is with you and your conscience. If you use the software then read the licence and register! ****************************************************************************** SOFTWARE LICENCE AGREEMENT / COPYRIGHT ****************************************************************************** INTRODUCTION Please read this Agreement carefully before using the software.
