  An android with a positronic brain, Lieutenant Commander Data
  is perhaps the premier machine that Starfleet has under its protective
  umbrella.  The loss of Data would be deemed a breach of security
  by Starfleet and would deal a severe blow to Starfleet scientific
  progression.

  Data was an honorary graduate of Starfleet Academy.  He was never
  admitted on grounds that he had an unfair advantage.  Since disproving
  any doubts about his sentience, Lieutenant Commander Data has
  actively pursued further knowledge.  His curiosity and desire for
  knowledge is unmatched anywhere in the galaxy.
