LAN Manager servers MICROSOFT LAN MANAGER 2.1 SERVER INSTALLATION NOTES: FOR THE INTEL EtherExpress(tm) 16 FAMILY OF NETWORK ADAPTERS ============================================================ This document applies to the EtherExpress(tm) 16, 16/TP, 16C, MCA, and MCA/TP. It contains notes for installing the NDIS driver in a LAN Manager server or OS/2 workstation. It does not explain how to configure an EtherExpress board. For instructions about configuring the board, see either the Expert's Guide or the Complete Guide for your board. This document is also available on FaxBACK. Document #6404. FOR A NEW SERVER OR OS/2 WORKSTATION: ------------------------------------- 1. To use the EtherExpress card in an initial LAN Manager Server installation, follow the standard installation procedure (Using the SETUP utility). An EtherExpress driver is included with LAN Manager 2.1, but you MUST update that driver with the on the EtherExpress disk. 2. Once you exit the SETUP utility, do NOT shutdown the computer. Verify that the I/O address in the Protocol.ini matches the I/O address of the board. Refer to the "EDITING PROTOCOL.INI" section below for instructions on changing the I/O address. 3. After exiting SETUP, reboot the computer as described in the manual. If an error message is displayed, ensure that the board is installed properly and the I/O address in PROTOCOL.INI matches the board. You may also run the Intel status-checking utility (described at the end of this file). FOR AN EXISTING SERVER OR OS/2 WORKSTATION: ------------------------------------------- These instructions assume that the LAN MANAGER operating system has already been installed on the server or workstation. 1. To install the EtherExpress adapter in an existing Server, use the LAN Manager SETUP utility and choose EtherExpress as the network adapter. An EtherExpress driver is included with LAN Manager 2.1, but you MUST update that driver with the on the EtherExpress disk. 2. Once you exit the SETUP utility, do NOT shut down the computer. Verify that the I/O address in the Protocol.ini matches the I/O address of the board. Refer to the "EDITING PROTOCOL.INI" section below for instructions on changing the I/O address. 3. Reboot the computer as described in the manual. If an error message is displayed, ensure that the board is installed properly and the I/O address in PROTOCOL.INI matches the board. CONFIGURING THE DRIVER FOR MULTIPLE BOARDS: ------------------------------------------- If you're putting multiple boards in one computer, be sure that each board has a unique I/O address. Use the NOS's SETUP utility to update the LAN Manager configuration to include the additional boards. After exiting SETUP, you must edit the PROTOCOL.INI file to change the I/O address parameters to match the boards. Refer to the "EDITING PROTOCOL.INI" section below for instructions on changing the I/O address. EDITING PROTOCOL.INI: --------------------- LAN Manger uses the PROTOCOL.INI file to ensure that the driver and the board are configured to work together. Our driver requires only one parameter, and its purpose is to ensure that the driver and the board are configured to use the same I/O address. The parameter's name is IOADDRESS. If a board is using an I/O address other than 300h, you must edit the PROTOCOL.INI file located in the directory \LANMAN to change configuration of the driver. 1. Using an ASCII editor, locate the EtherExpress section shown below: [EXP16_NIF] ; Intel EtherExpress(tm) 16 Ethernet Adapter. IOADDRESS=0x300 DRIVERNAME=EXP16$ 2. Replace the I/O address with the address you selected when you ran SOFTSET for the EtherExpress 16 or the System Configuration utility for the EtherExpress MCA. 3. Save the file and exit. The network driver now matches the configuration of the board and you should continue with the rebooting of the computer. STATUS-CHECKING UTILITY: ------------------------ We provide a utility, EXPSTAT.EXE, that allows you to check the status of the driver. The utility is located in the root directory of the EtherExpress disk: EXPSTAT will display: - The configuration of the board. If there are errors, the following information will be included: - The current status of the driver. - A list of all the types of errors, if any, that the board has experienced since the system was last booted. To erase the record of error types, reboot the system.
