UNIXWARE(TM) LAN ADAPTER UPDATE RELEASE NOTES ================================================================== These release notes acquaint you with the contents of software drivers available for new LAN adapters that have been certified for UnixWare Release 1.0 of the Application Server and the Personal Edition products, explain undocumented changes, discuss software notes and recommendations, and specify how to get information and support for your UnixWare products. PACKAGE CONTENTS UNIVEL offers UnixWare LAN Adapter driver software on the UnixWare Network Support Encyclopedia Volume Two CD-ROM, and various on-line services. These drivers are also available through UnixWare reseller channels. UNIXWARE NETWORK SUPPORT ENCYCLOPEDIA If you received UnixWare LAN adapter software on the UnixWare Network Support Encyclopedia Volume Two CD-ROM, you received IHV format software and UnixWare driver packaging software install scripts. In addition, reseller information and tools are available on this CD-ROM. To load the updates from CD-ROM, follow the instructions in the insert followed by reading the UNIVEL Update Manager User's Notes located on the CD-ROM. ON-LINE SERVICES If you retrieved LAN adapter software from a Univel on-line service, you should have retrieved one self extracting archive file named LANEL3.EXE. Execute LANEL3 through a DOS window on the UnixWare Desktop. This will unpack two documents containing both regular text and PostScript(R) versions of the release notes, a mkETHflp script for creating the IHV diskette, and a compressed cpio archive containing the driver software. Please read these notes before attempting to install any drivers. Each driver will require one 3.5-inch 1.44MB floppy diskette or one 5.25-inch 1.2MB floppy diskette. #chmod 544 mkETHflp The mkETHflp script can be executed either from the command line or by double clicking on the mkETHflp icon. #./mkETHflp Follow the installation instructions in this document for installing your UnixWare LAN adapter software from floppy. If you received an LAN Adapter Update from a UnixWare authorized reseller, you received either one 3.5-inch 1.44MB floppy diskette or one 5.25-inch 1.2MB floppy diskette for each driver that you wish to install on your UnixWare system. FLOPPY DISKETTE PACKAGE To load an LAN driver from floppy, follow the installation instructions located in this document. DOCUMENTATION Contained within each package is a regular text file containing the UnixWare LAN Adapter Update Release Notes. This document is automatically mailed to the system owner's account and displayed on screen at the time of installation. Please read this document and note any restrictions or dependencies. The following list of additional support documentation is available on the CD-ROM, or on a Univel on-line service: * UNIVEL Update Manager Users Guide, which guides you through the installation, maintenance, and redistribution of UnixWare updates. * UNIVEL UnixWare Hardware Compatibility Handbook, which provides information on any newly supported hardware certified for UnixWare 1.0. * UnixWare LAN Adapter Update Release Notes, which provides information and installation of any new LAN adapters certified for UnixWare 1.0. * UnixWare Host Bus Adapter Update Release Notes, which provides information and installation of any new Host Bus Adapters certified for UnixWare 1.0. * UnixWare Application Notes, which provides application instruction requirements for third party software applications. * UnixWare Top Issues, which contains current support information in a Question and Answer format. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR UNIXWARE LAN ADAPTER UPDATE This section provides step-by-step procedures for installing a UnixWare LAN Adapter Update. In addition, pre-installation requirements have been provided: INSTALLING AN LAN ADAPTER UPDATE FROM THE UNIXWARE DESKTOP NOTE: If an adapter has previously been configured for a different board, and you are installing a new board to be used as the first lan card, then you will need to remove the LAN Hardware Support Package using the pkgrm command before attempting to install a new driver. 1. Double-click on the Application Setup icon. (See "Using Application Setup" in Chapter 11 of the User Handbook for more information.) 2. After the system has finished cataloging the contents of the media, a list of packages is displayed in icon format. In this example the el3 package is the only icon that is displayed. 3a. Click on the el3 adapter package icon. 3b. Click on the Application option in the menu bar. 3c. Click on the Install menu item. The Add Application: screen is displayed, and the installation is in progress. 4. A brief message is displayed providing you with instructions for reading and exiting the UnixWare LAN Adapter Update Release Notes screen. The release notes will be displayed next. At this time either press the key to continue paging through the release notes or enter "q" at the colon prompt to exit the view. After one of these two steps have been taken, the installation process will continue. 5. The next screen displayed will prompt you to place the media into the drive. The installation process will detect if media has been inserted, and will continue to display the appropriate menu screens to aid you through the installation process. On-line help is also available throughout the installation process. 6. The Adapter Selection Menu screen will prompt for the number of boards to be configured of the selected bus type. 7. The Parameter Selection Menu screen will prompt for the interrupt vector by providing a list of available interrupt vectors. This screen is displayed on a per-board basis. The next field will prompt for either the I/O address for ISA systems, or the slot # for EISA based architectures. For EISA based systems, the I/O address is automatically configured from the slot number where the board has been installed. If the adapter supports multiple connectors such as AUI, BNC, or TP, the cable type selection field is then displayed. 8. Once the adapter selections have been responded, the installation of the driver software will continue. Once the files have been installed, the installation process will send notice to the installer the shut the system down, and execute a reboot in order to rebuild the kernel, and incorporate the new changes. INSTALLING AN LAN ADAPTER UPDATE FROM THE COMMAND LINE 1. Double-click on the Accessories icon located in the Desktop folder. 2. Double-click on the Terminal icon in the Accessories folder. A terminal window is displayed. 3. Insert the LAN Adapter diskette into a 3.5-inch floppy or 5.25-inch floppy drive. You need to be superuser (id=0) to execute the following command: 4. Mount the diskette as shown below: #mount -Fs5 -r /dev/dsk/f03ht /Disk_A (1st 3.5-inch floppy drive) #mount -Fs5 -r /dev/dsk/f13ht /Disk_B (2nd 3.5-inch floppy drive) #mount -Fs5 -r /dev/dsk/f0hht /Disk_A (1st 5.25-inch floppy drive) #mount -Fs5 -r /dev/dsk/f15ht /Disk_B (2nd 5.25-inch floppy drive) 5. LAN DRIVER NOTES AND RECOMMENDATIONS 3COM EtherLink III This driver package includes hardware support for the 3Com EtherLink III Parallel Tasking adapters. These adapters include the 16-bit ISA and 32-bit EISA adapters for both coax and 10Base-T connections. The EtherLink III adapters connect your PC to an LAN network wired with IEEE 802 standard 10Base-2 or 10Base-5 coaxial cable, or 10Base-T twisted-pair cable. The driver can be installed on systems that contain either the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus for the 3C509 adapters or the Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA) bus for 3C509 or 3C579 adapters. Models 3C509 and 3C509-TP are 16-bit adapters that can be installed in either ISA or EISA systems. Models 3C579 and 3C579-TP are 32-bit EISA adapters that only fit in EISA systems. The 3C509-TP and 3C579-TP adapters support the 10Base-T specifications. The 3C509 and 3C579 adapters support coaxial cable specifications. RESTRICTIONS The maximum number of adapters supported on a per system basis is 4. The EtherLink III Combo board is currently not certified for UnixWare along with the EtherLink III adapter for Microchannel (MCA) architectures.
