=========================================================================== DeskMan/2 Update Information File =========================================================================== ___________________________________________ Table of Contents ___________________________________________ Introduction: First time installation: Upgrading DeskMan/2: Change History: ___________________________________________ Introduction ___________________________________________ Development Technologies, Inc. (DevTech) is proud to announce DeskMan/2, the first and only tool designed to manage the OS/2 Workplace Shell; the potent new object oriented user interface that helps put OS/2 years ahead of its competition! For the first time, the Workplace Shell desktop can be backed up, restored, migrated and otherwise managed, all by using a simple Drag and Drop interface. This can be done with one or more individual Workplace Shell objects, or on the whole desktop, with a single command. DeskMan/2 is fully functional on all versions of OS/2 from OS/2 2.0 plus SOMFIX through OS/2 2.0 plus ServicePak and up to OS/2 2.1 GA. It will not only provide forward compatibility, but also backward compatibility, as necessary. It is CUA-compliant, providing the OS/2 user with a familiar user interface. DeskMan/2 is fully functional on both FAT and HPFS systems, although HPFS systems do naturally operate at faster speeds. DeskMan/2 is THE product for managing the Workplace Shell. Just consider how YOU might use DeskMan/2: You are an OS/2 user with a single Workplace Shell desktop. Backup and Restore your Workplace Shell desktop. Share Workplace Shell objects with other users. Create a library of icon files for every object on your desktop. Delete objects which the built-in Shredder will not delete. Query objects for their settings to learn more about them. Create REXX scripts to completely recreate almost any object. Query and replace object ID's for almost any object. Replace any object's icon:elink. with other object's icon. Change an object's styles, temporarily or permanently. Use Drive mapping when changing the locations you access on your system. Will neither save nor restore Minimized Window Viewer or its contents, allowing DeskMan/2 to be used regardless of other objects in use. You are an OS/2 user with multiple copies of OS/2 on a single machine. Permits any or all objects to be saved, restored, or migrated between desktops easily. If DeskMan/2 files are stored in a data partition and not an OS/2 boot volume, then Formatting and Reinstallation of new versions of OS/2 becomes a minor inconvenience instead of a major project as the desktop configuration can be easily restored. This is especially useful for those using beta versions of OS/2 who wish to upgrade to OS/2 2.1 GA, as IBM technical support personnel have said that such users will need to reformat their OS/2 boot volumes. Will not replace the Desktop object, DeskMan/2 itself, nor Printer objects, allowing for system specific versions of these objects. You are an OS/2 user with multiple machines, such as at home and at work. Permits any or all objects to be saved, restored, or migrated between desktops easily. Will not replace the Desktop object, DeskMan/2 itself, nor Printer objects, allowing for system specific versions of these objects. On most systems, will allow for the DeskMan/2 object description files and the full icon library to fit on one 3.5" 1.44MB diskette, or two 770K diskettes. You are an OS/2 administrator with multiple machines on a network. Network and CID enabled, including remote installation/configuration. Allows easy backup and restoration of OS/2 desktops, cutting the installation time for OS/2 2.1 GA upgrades by a significant factor. Allows easy setup of both personal and standardized desktops that can be accessed from any workstation. Full administrative control of features available to individual users. ___________________________________________ First Time Installation ___________________________________________ If you are installing DeskMan/2 for the first time, please use the following simple procedure, for best results. In the examples below, the diskette in Drive A: is a copy of the original DeskMan/2 diskette, and the product is being installed on Drive C:. 1) Make sure the original program diskette is locked - the sliding tab is up, and the hole is clear. 2) Make a backup copy of the original program disk. Store the original distribution diskette in a safe place. For example: DISKCOPY A: A: 3) Using the copy of the DeskMan/2 diskette, copy all of the files present on the diskette into a directory on the hard drive, whether temporary or not. For example: MD DESKMAN2 COPY A:\*.* C:\DESKMAN2\*.* /V 4) Install DeskMan/2 on the local system. Additional information on this may be found in the DESKMAN.INF file. To review it, type VIEW DESKMAN at an OS/2 command prompt, while in the proper directory. For example: CD \DESKMAN2 VIEW DESKMAN2 INSTALL 5) After running the INSTALL program, selecting INSTALL, and entering your customer name, DeskMan/2 should now be installed. Double-click the small icon in the upper left corner of the installation window to terminate the installation process. You should now have two new icons on your desktop. The first is the DeskMan/2 icon. The second is the DeskMan/2 User's Guide. If there are any additional questions about DeskMan/2, the User's Guide should provide the answers. It is strongly suggested that users read through the Introduction, Getting Started, and Online Tutorial sections. NOTE: If you are using OS/2 2.1 GA, please make sure that you have applied all available OS/2 patches and fixes before installing DeskMan/2. This specifically includes the fixes contained within 21WPSF.ZIP found on CompuServe, OS2BBS, and elsewhere. ___________________________________________ Upgrading DeskMan/2 ___________________________________________ This procedure assumes that you are upgrading from DeskMan/2, version 1.00 or version 1.01, to version 1.10. It further assumes that you still have your original program diskette, plus an archive called DM2110.ZIP, which contains a copy of this file, as well as the appropriate patch files to update your current version of DeskMan/2 to the latest version of DeskMan/2. If you know which version of DeskMan/2 you are currently using, you could substitute a smaller, version specific archive, such as DM2100.ZIP (1.00->1.10) or DM2101.ZIP (1.01->1.10), in place of the larger, more general DM2110.ZIP. This procedure will update your DeskMan/2 master files, but will not affect any DeskMan/2 files in use, until you reinstall DeskMan/2 in step 6. It may be necessary to shut down and restart the system in step 6, if DeskMan/2 has been used after the system was last booted. 1) Create a directory on your hard disk. For example: MD C:\DESKMAN2 2) Copy all the files from your diskette into this new directory. For example: COPY A:\*.* C:\DESKMAN2\*.* /V 3) Place the archive, DM2110.ZIP, into the new directory. For example: Download DM2110.ZIP into C:\DESKMAN2 4) Unzip all files in the archive. For example: PKUNZIP DM2110.ZIP 5) Apply the update. For example: UPDATE 6) Your new directory now contains your updated DeskMan/2 files. Please back them up and reinstall DeskMan/2. For example: COPY C:\DESKMAN2\*.* A:\*.* /V INSTALL NOTE: If you are using OS/2 2.1 GA, please make sure that you have applied all available OS/2 patches and fixes before installing DeskMan/2. This specifically includes the fixes contained within 21WPSF.ZIP found on CompuServe, OS2BBS, and elsewhere. 7) After installing the new version of DeskMan/2, please check the settings notebook to verify that your settings are set as desired. We recommend that all REXX generation be turned off unless required, and that both icon and data-file saves be enabled. We STRONGLY recommend that you set aside one or more directories for use solely by DeskMan/2's save and restore features. Close the settings notebook. IMPORTANT! File references were changed from version 1.00 to version 1.01, so please follow the next steps carefully: 8) Change your directory to the directory that contains your saved object description file(s). For example: CD \DESKMAN 9) Verify that you have only DeskMan/2's .DRC saved object description files and other internal files in your directory. To do this, you can compare the files you see on a directory listing with the files referenced by the pathnames in the DeskMan/2 notebook settings. If you see only DESKMAN.DRC, or that plus any of the following: DESKMAN.IRC, DESKMAN.CMD, DESKMANI.CMD, or DESKMAN.LOG files; along with a bunch of files that look like the names of objects which you see in your Templates folder, you're fine. Go to step 10. If you do not see this, open your DRIVES folder, open the drives object that contains the directory where you have your saved object description files, and examine that directory through the graphical interface. If you see the files mentioned above, then continue with step 10, otherwise skip to step 11. 10) To make sure that you start out with a clean system, we're going to delete your .DRC, .CMD, and data-file files from this directory. Be sure to delete these files only if you are not using this directory for any other purpose than storing DeskMan/2's various storage files. If you are storing your icons in this directory, go ahead and delete them if you wish. If you are storing your icons in a subdirectory, go ahead and delete them from that subdirectory too, if you want to remove the saved icon files. Note that this has no effect upon existing objects' icons, only upon saved icons and icons not in use that are saved in the same directory. Please note that using the CLEANUP.CMD file to remove non-referenced data-files and icons can also remove icons stored with DeskMan/2's saved icons in order to merge icon libraries. If you have merged icon libraries, it is suggested that you back them up before using CLEANUP.CMD. 11) Save your desktop, automatically recreating your saved object files and placing copies of your icons and data-file objects into the appropriate sub-directories. 12) Congratulations, you're now using an updated version of DeskMan/2! =========================================================================== Change History ________________________________________________ What's Changed from Version 1.00 to Version 1.01 ________________________________________________ Changed: Drag & Drop restore no longer leaves DESKMAN.### temporary file. Changed: Opening DeskMan/2 no longer brings up an empty restore container window if the help file is not available. Changed: Does not trap when saving on systems with Screen Reader installed. Changed: Install window properly minimizing upon request. Changed: CLEANUP.CMD removes saved data files. Changed: INSTALL.EXE now defaults to setting icon files to ..\ICO. Changed: INSTALL.EXE now defaults to setting data-files to ..\DATA. Changed: ICONFILE only used if the icon changes in .INI files. Changed: Open Settings on Drop special function now functional. Changed: Recreates original objects before shadows of them, where possible. Changed: Removed .ICO file left after Query object settings on drop. Changed: REXX generation switched off by default during processing. Changed: DeskMan/2 icon can now be replaced either by changing DESKMAN2.ICO before a reinstallation or through the regular settings operations. Of course, it can also be done through DeskMan/2's Assign icon on drop special function. Changed: Data-files settings added to the third page of the notebook settings for use with DeskMan/2. Note that when propagating a system from one desktop to another, any data-file objects referred to in the .DRC must be copied onto the other machine before the objects can be attempted in a restoration. If these objects' names change during transit, such as from an HPFS to a FAT to an HPFS file system, you must NOT USE COPY or XCOPY! Use the Drag & Drop routines from the Drives folder, because otherwise the information on the long file names will not be retained. Changed: The drive mapping capability now includes the ability to map both icons and data-files when mapping from one drive onto another. Both are off by default. Changed: The directory file path for the saved Data-file objects has now beed added to the installation program. It has a default of ..\DATA. Changed: The remote install program and sample configuration file have both been updated to incorporate the above changes to the installation. Changed: REXX code to recreate DeskMan/2 itself is now functioning. Changed: "Device not ready" problems resolved with removable media. Changed: Memory is now properly handled, and proper deallocation occurs when processing Shadows' icons, no longer causing an out of Memory error. Changed: Current release/version changed to 1.01 Changed: DeskMan/2 should now be NLS enabled (resources, messages) except for any debug messages. Changed: Stack size changed for processing threads to avoid 64k multiples due to a KERNEL bug. Changed: Fixed difficulty with query settings trap due to stack issues. Changed: Saves data files, setting added to the 3rd Save settings page. Save data files is set to YES by default. Changed: date/time format in the restore window changed to reflect the current country setting. Note: for INI.RC file the date will show 0-0-0 and time 12:00:00 AM. Changed: Excessive strings no longer generated by Generate REXX in restore cointainer. Changed: The Find function now scrolls to the first object found. Changed: Displays a blank instead of multiple zeroes for any date or time that does not exist. Changed: Data files directory on INSTALL will default to the same parent directory as ICO, i.e. if ICO is: x:\DESKMAN\ICO, DATA will be assumed as x:\DESKMAN\DATA, if not found to be otherwise in the INI file. Changed: Change Loc push button changed to Set Path button. Changed: Does not reset the file names when user selects Set Path on INSTALL. Changed: Does not dismiss INSTALL dialog if the directory selected does not exist, and user does not want to create a new directory. Changed: Completed final stack adjustments. Corrected the Trap in the Generate REXX function from the DeskMan/2 window. ________________________________________________ What's Changed from Version 1.01 to Version 1.10 ________________________________________________ - This information file created. - the DeskMan.CFG file contains a complete set of setup strings which can be used to install and customize DeskMan/2 (using DeskManR.CMD). - the DeskMan.CF1 file contains setup strings which allow one to change all DeskMan/2 settings and customize functions available for an existing DeskMan/2 object (using DeskManS.CMD). - the DeskMan/2 special function, Assign ICON on drop, will now assign a single icon to multiple objects in a single action. - the Perfxx.CMD files can be used to perform command line operations on the DeskMan/2 object: - PerfSD: save the desktop. - PerfRD: restore the desktop. - PerfSS: save system settings. - PerfRS: restore system settings. - PerfSO: save object(s). - PerfRO: restore object(s). - PerfDO: destroy object(s). The CMD files contain a comment section explaining the format of paramaters. - AllowCancel setup string added. Changed: file name created incorrectly when dragging from restore window to EPM. Changed: If any Special function is selected and then selected again, then this function is deselected, and Save objects is made active. Changed: DeskMan/2 will run automatically a check on duplicate object IDs existing on the desktop. The duplicates will be changed to be unique. The check is always run during the installation process and after selecting Save desktop. If duplicates are found, a message is displayed: "DeskMan/2 detected and corrected duplicate object IDs!" Note: the default WPS object IDs () will NOT be changed. Note: WPS has a bug and will create duplicate object ID even without DeskMan/2's participation. Example: create a folder, select another folder which contains other folders. Verify that the object selected has an object ID and the one contained in it has one, too. Copy the selected folder to the one newly created. Verify object IDs. On GA+SP the copies and the originals will retain their object IDs. In 2.1 GA, the folder copied will loose its object ID but the folders contained in it, will still have their old object IDs. Changed: PerformSaveSettings setup string added. Current DeskMan/2 settings will be saved. This is usefull when performing remote operations - the settings can be changed by using the setup strings. They will be restored to their previous values after the system is re-booted. To save them, PerformSaveSettings can be used. Changed: restore code changed to remove the restored object if it already exists and the Restore if exists option is used. This will allow to avoid most of the duplicates. Of course, it works only if used online. Changed: Map Drives window painting adjusted. =========================================================================== We thank all those whose efforts and suggestions helped us to create this latest version of DeskMan/2.
