Although I like Wildcat, I have found a number of little "annoyances" that there seem to be no way to change in Wildcat. One of the things I disliked the most was WC asking the caller if he/she would like to view the Newsletter after it has been updated. I wanted to make SURE the user would see it, not offering the caller a chance to say no. I've tried a few different ways to do this, starting by copying the NEWSLTR.BBS file to HELLO9N.BBS. This worked, except it would still ask the user if they wanted to view it at log-on. So, I then changed the date of NEWSLTR.BBS to 01/01/80 after it had been updated and copied to HELLO9N.BBS. This was good, except Tomcat users would never get it as updated news. So, finally, I realized the only way to accomplish exactly what I wanted to do would be to change the prompts in Wildcat. This was actually pretty simple. Here's what you do - Go in to MKWCTEXT and load your prompts. Change Prompt #508 from -------- | "Would you like to view it?" | | TO | | "@0E@Press [@0F@ENTER@0E@] to continue?@00@" ------- Next, edit prompt #500 - "The Newsletter Has Been Updated" Simply change this to all blank spaces. This procedure will appear to the caller as the regular "Press [ENTER] to continue" that they see in many other places on your board. When they hit enter, they'll be shown the Newsletter (since they REALLY are selecting the default "Y" answer to the question that you changed). It is important to include the @00@ after the question mark in Prompt #508, if you don't they'll get a prompt that shows them the [Y] (default answer), and more experienced users may pick up on this and hit N, thus avoiding the newsletter. For the above mentioned reason, this is not foolproof. Even though the prompt doesn't APPEAR to be a yes/no question, it still is (this is apparantly hard-coded into Wildcat). Most users, however, will see this as the regular prompt and just hit [ENTER]. If you haven't updated your newsletter, the user will not get to this prompt, and therefore not see the news. Tomcat will send the news with the caller's QWK packet. This procedure will NOT affect your users who call with Robocomm, or a similar automated utility, since we used a prompt that is identical to another of Wildcat's built-in prompts.
