Following is a short thread which I started, and then captured all the replies. It is regarding 9600 baud modems, and is self-explanatory. Uploaded in the hope that it provides those considering purchases with some additional information when making their choice. 22 Sept 90 ........................................................................... #: 36897 S7/Modems/Comm Hdw [C] 21-Sep-90 08:06:55 Sb: #9600 Baud Modems Fm: Tom Murdock 76424,3544 To: Earle Robinson 76004,1762 (X) Earle... Have watched your messages on this forum long enough to recognize you as a card-carrying, certified expert on data communications. Could I borrow some of your expertise for a moment, please?.... I am considering the acquisition of a 9600 baud modem, and would like to know if you have any recommendations. At present, I am tending to favor either Hayes or USR, both of the V.42bis variety, but have heard that there is a new offering from Practical Peripherals at a most attractive price. My objectives, besides being able to transmit files at a zippy pace, is to select a modem that has as wide a range of compatibility at as high a speed as possible with as many different modems as possible. ............................................................................ #: 36923 S7/Modems/Comm Hdw [C] 21-Sep-90 12:32:41 Sb: #36897-#9600 Baud Modems Fm: Earle Robinson 76004,1762 To: Tom Murdock 76424,3544 (X) I'm flattered, but I'm neither certified nor expert, nor do I have yearnings for mother! I've not tried the new ppi, nor the intel v.32, also announced for imminent release. Both modems will be cheaper than either the hayes or the hst dual. Assuming budgetary restraints, I'd be inclined to go for the ppi or the intel, once released, AND once it is certain they have any teething problems resolved. As in software, version 1.0 is always a risky purchase, even if the mfr will make the exchange and upgrade later. Between the hayes and the hst dual I prefer the hayes. Let me set out a table that might be a little more meaningful than a lot of words: Hayes HST Dual connect to other v.32 easy difficult connect to 2400 remote better requires more parameter changes modulations all all but v.23 busy signal aware better poor (mainly due to the uk) X.25 access yes no Manual awful reasonably good CIS Support yes, limited none BBS yes, 800 number yes Phone support yes, no 800 yes, 800 number Volume control none, except M0 yes Case robust flimsy I prefer the hayes. -er ........................................................................... #: 37043 S7/Modems/Comm Hdw [C] 22-Sep-90 11:04:27 Sb: #36923-#9600 Baud Modems Fm: Peter Schulz 70216,174 To: Earle Robinson 76004,1762 (X) Have you really had problems connecting to other V.32's with the HST DS? I do it all the time with no problems whatsoever - Hayes Ultra, Microcom, etc. I do have the latest version of the DS (with V.42) and I heard they cleaned up a lot of existing problems when they add the V.42. They also seemed to have removed the speaker volume control (L0-3). It's no longer documented, the modem accepts the command but ignores it. I also have no problem connecting to 2400 baud modems. I run my DS locked at 38400 for ALL operations and make no parameter changes to call 2400. I'll admit I've not tried it with the stateside v.32's since installing the new proms for v.42/v.42bis, but I do find it is problematic when calling the states even for an hst connection, at least to some areas. As for the volume control, I think the knob is better anyway. I curse those mfrs who don't have such a volume control, merely to save a few cents, especially for the more expensive modems. -er ............................................................................ #: 37138 S7/Modems/Comm Hdw [C] 23-Sep-90 10:20:49 Sb: #37062-9600 Baud Modems Fm: Peter Schulz 70216,174 To: Earle Robinson 76004,1762 Too bad you've got these problems! Is it just the circuits over there? I wish the DS had EITHER a know or implemented the L command. SInce it has neither I just set M0 and watch the lights. Peter /end/ ÿ
