INSTALLING YOUR SUPRAFAXMODEM ROM UPGRADE Congratulations! The enclosed ROM upgrade will increase your modem's capabilities to provide even better performance than you've experienced so far with your SupraFAXModem. To upgrade your modem, please follow these instructions carefully. IF YOU ARE UNEASY ABOUT PERFORMING THE UPGRADE YOURSELF These instructions have been designed and tested to make the upgrade a fairly simple task, even for someone who has never replaced a chip before. Our hope is that with these instructions in hand, you can install the new ROMs quickly and easily, and be using your upgraded modem in a very short time. However, if you are uneasy about performing the upgrade yourself, you also have two other options: Take the modem and the enclosed upgrade kit to the dealer you purchased it from, and ask them to install the upgrade. Have Supra perform the upgrade. If you want Supra to perform the upgrade, follow these steps: 1. Pack the modem and the enclosed upgrade kit in a sturdy shipping box. 2. Send the box, via UPS or a similar carrier, to: Supra Corporation ATTN: Modem Upgrade 7101 Supra Drive SW Albany, OR 97321 USA Upon receiving the box, we will install the upgrade and return your modem via UPS within a few days. The upgrade and shipping back to you will be free. If you need further information, please contact Supra Technical Support as described on page 4. BEFORE YOU START UPGRADING YOUR MODEM NOTE Ä In these instructions, LEFT and RIGHT assume you are looking at the front of the modem. 1. Discharge static electricity by touching something grounded, like a sink faucet or a metal computer case Ä touching the modem case is not enough. Then until you complete the installation procedure, be careful to minimize static electricity; for example, don't rub your feet on carpet during the installation. Like any chips, your new ROM chips can be ruined by excess static electricity. 2. Make sure you have everything. Everything you need for the upgrade should be included in your ROM upgrade kit: 2 ROM chips combination phillips/flathead screwdriver these instructions 3. To avoid confusion, leave the NEW ROM chips in the packaging they came in until after you have discarded the OLD ROM chips. 4. Turn off the modem and disconnect all the cables connected to it. OPEN THE MODEM CASE 5. Use the provided phillips screwdriver to remove two screws from the bottom of the modem case. 6. Unscrew and remove the ON/OFF button from the front of the modem. 7. Remove the black plastic bezel from the FRONT of the modem, as follows: a. Slide the provided flathead screwdriver under the edge of the bezel on one side of the modem. b. Push the bezel slightly off the front of the case. c. Slide the screwdriver under the bezel on the other side of the modem. d. Slide the front bezel off the case and set it aside. 8. Carefully slide the modem board all the way out of the case. Once it's out of the case, hold the board by its edges as much as possible. CAUTION Ä Be very careful not to damage the board when handling it. REMOVE YOUR OLD ROMS 9. Locate the old ROM chips, labeled "87-3F" and "87-4F." If you have earlier ROMs, the chip label may say A, B, C, D, or E in place of the F. 10. Note the relative location and orientation of each of these chips. You'll need to know their location and orientation when you install the new ROM chips: "87-3F" is closer to the back of the modem, and "87-4F" is closer to the front. Note a small notch on the top of each chip. This notch is toward the LEFT of the modem (assuming you are looking at the front of the modem). 11. Use the flathead screwdriver to carefully lift and remove both of these chips Ä for best leverage, slide the screwdriver all the way under the chip, and tip the screwdriver from side to side to lift the chip. Note that you now have two empty sockets in which to install the new chips. INSTALLING YOUR SUPRAFAXMODEM ROM UPGRADE 2 12. Set the old chips aside, being careful not to confuse them with the new ROM chips. Wait to discard them until you have installed the new ROMs and know that your modem is working. INSTALL YOUR NEW ROMS 13. Remove the new ROM chips from their packaging. 14. If necessary, gently press the pins on one or both sides of the chip against a table top Ä as shown at right Ä so that the pins are perpendicular. This will allow the pins to slide into the socket. 15. READ THIS ENTIRE STEP CAREFULLY BEFORE DOING IT. CAUTION Ä Correct chip location and orientation are ESSENTIAL. If you place the chip in the wrong socket, or orient it incorrectly, the modem will not work. LOCATION "87-3" must be closer to the back of the modem, and "87-4" must be closer to the front. ORIENTATION Note a small notch on the top of each chip. This notch must be toward the LEFT of the modem (assuming you are looking at the front of the modem). After reading these steps, you will install the first chip as follows: a. Hold the new chip labeled "87-4J" over the empty socket that is closest to the FRONT of the modem. NOTE Ä If you did not choose the Caller ID option, this ROM chip is labeled "87-4H." b. Make sure that the small notch on the top of the chip is toward the LEFT of the modem, away from the ON/OFF button. c. Carefully line up the chip's "feet" (pins) with the corresponding socket holes. Make sure none of the pins are bent. d. With the chip fairly level, use your fingers to carefully push the chip into the socket until it is snug. When the chip is installed correctly, it is level, and the top of the chip is at the same height as the large chip labeled "Rockwell." e. Now that you've read the instructions for Step 15, go ahead and install the chip. 16. Repeat step 15 to install the second chip, "87-3J," but install this chip in the socket that is closest to the BACK of the modem. If you did not choose the Caller ID option, this ROM chip is labeled "87-3H." INSTALLING YOUR SUPRAFAXMODEM ROM UPGRADE 3 Replace the Modem Case 17. Slide the modem board back in the modem case, making sure the phone jacks and other sockets go in first, so they are at the BACK of the modem Ä if the modem does not slide in easily, a small component on the BOTTOM of the modem board, called a "heat sink" may have caught on the case. If so, gently press on the heat sink until the modem board will slide into the case easily. Do not push the heat sink any farther than necessary to slide the board. 18. Carefully snap the black plastic bezel back onto the front of the modem. Getting the bezel to fit well is tricky; you may need to experiment a little to get it to fit. 19. Screw the ON/OFF switch back on the modem. 20. Screw the 2 screws back into the bottom of the modem. TEST THE INSTALLATION 21. Reconnect the modem and turn it on. After about 20 seconds, the modem display should say "OK." If it does, your upgrade is complete. Enjoy your modem! If the modem display does NOT say "OK," consider that one or more of the following may be causing a problem. If these solutions don't help, try the additional suggestions in the SupraFAXModem Reference Manual. The modem is not connected properly. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the modem, making sure that all connections are secure. One of the ROM chip pins is bent. After trying these suggestions and those in the SupraFAXModem Reference Manual, try to reconnect and turn on the modem. The upgrade is complete when the modem display says "OK" within approximately 20 seconds after you turn it on. If you need further assistance, please contact Supra Technical Support.
