Now that you have downloaded and un-ARCed the package what do you do with it? PCALL.EXE is a program that will simplify using external file transfer protocols such as Zmodem. The actual file name of this protocol is DSZ.COM. Both of these two programs are very well done and bug free, as far as I can tell. Their soul shortcoming, in my opinion, is that the sparse documentation in these shareware packages made it next to impossible to fairly evaluate them. Hopefully, this combination of files and my instructions will make things a little easier for newer users like myself and, at the same time generate satisfied customers for the producers of these programs. *** Please be sure to read the shareware license agreements for these packages!*** Let's do it! First make sure that PCALL.EXE and DSZ.COM are on the same default directory as your Procomm program. Use the general setup menu in Procomm to configure Alt-A (the editor key) to call up PCALL.EXE. Configure PCALL.EXE to your system, following the directions in PCALL's doc file. The default setting will use COM 2. Change this if you are using COM 1 or COM "whatever". The download command for ZMODEM will download the file you selected from the other system to C:\procomm\dl. You probably have a different path and directory for your d/l files so change this one if you need to. Now, DSZ.COM also needs to be configured to your system but PCALL will do it for you if you have things set up right in PCALL. Neat, huh? So, your all set up, your on line with "THE DONOR ORGAN BBS" and have selected a file to download via Zmodem because its faster and more reliable than most other protocols. The screen says ready to send file or something like that. Whack that Alt-A key sequence. This will run PCALL which will ask what you want to do. We want to download this time so select that option with the Pg Dn key. Now the protocol menu appears. Select Zmodem since that's what the host is expecting. The remainder of the process is automatic and will dump you back into Procomm when you are done. This should give you a good handle on how to use PCALL to get ZMODEM to work for you from within Procomm. You could use the DOS gateway and talk to DSZ.COM directly. But for most users I think this is the simplest way. If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave me a note here.
