FWKCS(TM) Contents_Signature System, Version 1.17. 1992 Feb 12. (C)Copyright Frederick W. Kantor 1989-1992. All rights reserved. For use with IBM/MS DOS 3.30-5.00; preferably at least 380 K free memory. This zipfile, FWKCS117.ZIP, contains the complete FWKCS(TM) Contents_Signature System, Version 1.17, including executable assembly_language programs, documentation, and supporting human_interface programs, with additional programs to carry out the installation procedures. FWKCS provides many valuable functions, including finding duplicate files, automatically screening files uploaded to an electronic bulletin board system, and remote searching for files. It provides a pair_wise statistical error rate typically less than one part per trillion. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As a BBS user, would you like to get the remote Lookup capability to help you find files and avoid duplicate uploads? If you do not wish to install the FWKCS system on your own computer at this time, you can do these two steps: PKUNZIP FWKCS117.ZIP , and then GETLOOK . After that, for direct help, type LOOKUP /* and RCROSREF /* . More detailed information is given in LOOKUP.DOC. See REGISTER.DOC for information about registering your copy of FWKCS(TM) and about how to get new versions. To do the full FWKCS system installation, see the instructions, below. To Replace FWKCS Ver. 1.12 Or Later: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you are replacing an existing FWKCS system, Version 1.12 or later, which is in good working order, copy FWKCS117.ZIP into an empty directory, go there, unzip FWKCS117.ZIP, and run REPLACE. Important: run REPLACE in the same directory with FWKCS117.ZIP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- How to Install the FWKCS(TM) Contents_Signature System, Ver. 1.17. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To run the installation procedure for the FWKCS(TM) Contents_Signature System, Version 1.17, you need on your PATH at least the following ("*" denotes shareware; if you are missing any of the * pieces, see Note 2, below, for a way you might get them as no_fee downloads): * Phil Katz's PKUNZIP(R), Version 1.10 or later * Ben Baker's QSORT, Version 3.20 And, if you are replacing version 1.12 or later of FWKCS, and wish to keep the old macros, you need a version of QBASIC, GWBASIC, BASICA, or BASIC, suitable for use on your system. If your operating system permits you to defragment files, you may benefit from running a file defragmentation program after installing FWKCS, e.g., Peter Norton's Speed Disk. And for use later, you should have also * Phil Katz's PKZIP(R), Version 1.10 or later * McAfee's SCAN * Vernon Buerg's LIST Before intalling FWKCS for the first time: to prevent accidental double_counting of files, go over your system carefully and make sure either (easy way) that there is no case in which the same physical file is reached by two different paths (check all your ASSIGN and SUBST commands), or (this is more complicated) that you know of all such cases: if you need to use duplicate paths, see Note 1, below; then do: PKUNZIP FWKCS117.ZIP INSTALL and then follow the instructions on the screen. INSTALL is used in the same directory with FWKCS117.ZIP. Note 1: if you need to have extra path(s) to the same file(s), then later, when you get to the screen which says "Menu for installation" in the upper left corner, use option 5; when S_SETUP is turned over to you for use, study the screen carefully, and leave out (or exclude) the extra path(s) when you specify what to include in the search. INSTALL will do preliminary setup steps, bring out the GO installation program, and then start GO. GO is an interactive program. Take your time. Read each screen slowly and carefully. Follow the instructions for making a printed record. The "Menu for installation" screen is part of GO. After the automatic installation has finished running, the printed record will tell you how and where to get on_line help. On a large system, the automatic procedure can take hours to run. If you are using drives which have slow access to files, it can take many hours. The special .BAT programs to help you find duplicate files are installed in the \CS directory. You can go there and type CSM , to bring up the CS on_line_help Menu. The general_use programs are installed in the \CSA Contents_Signature Activity Place; you should put the \CSA directory on your PATH. You can go there and type CSAM , to bring up the CSA on_line_help Menu. Be patient, Have fun, and if you need help, please ask. P.S.: After you have tested this software for up to 30 days, register your copy of FWKCS as explained in REGISTER.DOC, which normally will be available in your \CSA directory. And, please do not remove Dr. Kantor's Authenticity Verification stamp from the FWKCS117.ZIP zipfile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note 2: If you are missing any of the shareware programs marked with an asterisk (*) above, you can get them as no_fee downloads from The Invention Factory BBS on your first call.
