This issue we will cover Amazon, a PC game for RPGers out there, DOS's DoubleSpace and much more. **GONZO'S GAMES** AMAZON is a light-hearted role-playing game. You are a young scientist who must rescue his brother who is trapped in the Amazon. The play screen is much like the Kings Quest games, with icons and a mouse cursor to interact. AMAZON has the look and feel of an old Republic serial, starting with an opening count (5...4...3...). The game has a limited built-in hint system which will only give you so many hints before it makes fun of how stupid you are. The graphics are great, the fun lasts throughout the game, and it will keep you busy. GONZO'S RATING: 6 out of 10. Amazon Guardians of Eden: $49; Access Software Inc. **GONZO'S TIPS** "Save Early and Often." Save your game frequently if the game allows it, but don't do it to the point where you take the challenge out of playing. **DOS** In our last issue we covered MEMMAKER and the problems it causes. In this issue we would like to point out a few problems with DoubleSpace. DoubleSpace is a disk compression utility that is built into the DOS kernel itself. It is not like Superstor or Stacker, because those programs run independent of the operating system. DoubleSpace compresses data using the Lempel-Ziv algorithm, which looks for a repeated series of data strings, then chooses a token to represent them. DoubleSapce allows you to compress your hard disk or a floppy disk. When DoubleSpace is launched onto a hard drive, it creates another drive. For example: let's say your hard drive is C:, and you only have 2 floppy drives. DoubleSpace would create a D: drive. Now here is where it get tricky. All the data on your C: drive is compressed into 1 file. That file is called a CVF (Compressed Volume File). The CVF file is stored on Drive D:, which is called the Host drive. Now DoubleSpace tricks DOS into thinking that Drive D: is drive C:. Drive C: will look no different than it did before. DoubleSpace compreses about a little less than a half of your hard drive, so a 40 megabyte hard drive will become 60 megabytes when compressed. DoubleSpace is a fairly sound program. Since its combined into the operating system itself, there would be very little room errors. *DOS tip of the month: Ever have a batch program that you want to delete all the files in one directory? Ever have to answer "Y" to that warning when you just want to wipe everything in one command? Now you can, here is a batch command to relieve you of that problem. ECHO Y | DEL *.* **BBS** On-line games are a great way for you to relax. They are also a good way to kill time while you're waiting for someone to log on. Many BBS's feature on-line games. The popular ones are Role Playing Games (RPG's), as they are the easiest to control over a BBS. BBS's have offered on-line games since about 1984 and the games continue to improve. The favorites of most people are Blackjack, Slot Machine, and Hangman type games. The only barrier these days are the graphics. Graphics dont play smooth over a BBS, so most of the games you'll be seeing on-line will be IBM characters (ASCII). Don't let that discourage you. All the games are fun and worth checking out. *BBS tip of the month: I bet if you're a BBS'er that is an addict, then your phone bill is higher than the Sears Tower. Most users don't know that some BBS's have "local access" numbers so that you can call and not be charged long distance. Just ask the sysop on the board for an access number local to your area. **PROGRAMMING** Ever want to reboot from a batch file? Or just reboot? Well get ready! In this issue we have some DEBUG codes for you! The program will do a warm boot on your PC. You should give some thought to making lots of remark statements in your program so that you can remember what you did before the change. **NEWS BITS** - Avery's Label Printer for Windows hits the shelves at a pricy cost of $249.00 (list) - NEC 27" monitor the 3PG ($3,395) has the ability for video teleconferencing and a remote control. - Fractal Design Painter for Windows 2.0. $399 - Datacard from Kingston is a card that has a hard drive and can have up to 64 megabytes of memory on one card.
