If you have WordStar 3.31, you can now use these additional printers: Diablo 630 ECS Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Hewlett-Packard ThinkJet IBM Quietwriter IBM Wheelprinter If you have WordStar 3.30, you can now use the above five printers as well as a number of new and modified printers not previously available to WordStar 3.30 users. During WordStar installation, you'll see a complete listing of all the printers you can use. ======================== A TECHNICAL NOTE ============================ When you use the Printer-Support Enhancement Disk, files on your WordStar Program Disk will be replaced with updated files. If you have WordStar 3.31, WS.INS, WSOVLY1.OVR, and WINSTALL.EXE will be replaced with updated files. If you have WordStar 3.30, WS.INS and WSOVLY1.OVR will be replaced with updated files. WINSTALL.COM and WINSTALL.OVR will be replaced by the new file WINSTALL.EXE. If you used the previous version of the Printer-Support Enhancement Disk (April 1985), WINSTALL.COM and WINSTALL.OVR have already been replaced. When you follow the instructions below, you'll see the DOS message "File not found." Simply ignore the message and the updating process will continue as it's supposed to. July 1985 WordStar 3.30 and 3.31 WSENHANC.TXT Page 2 =========== HOW TO USE THE PRINTER-SUPPORT ENHANCEMENT DISK ========== If you have single-sided drives, skip this section and read "Using the Printer-Support Enhancement Disk on Single-Sided Drives" at the end of this document. If you have double-sided drives or a hard disk, continue reading. 1. If you have a floppy disk system, format a blank, double-sided disk. If you have a hard disk system, create a new directory. See the instructions in your DOS manual if you need help with either of the above procedures. 2. Copy the following files from your ORIGINAL WordStar Program Disk(s) onto the disk or directory you prepared in step 1. If you have WordStar 3.30, copy these files: WSU.COM, WSMSGS.OVR, WS.INS, WINSTALL.COM, WINSTALL.OVR. If you have WordStar 3.31, copy these files: WSU.COM, WSMSGS.OVR, WS.INS, WINSTALL.EXE. 3. Place the Printer-Support Enhancement Disk in drive A. If you have a two floppy disk system, place the disk from Step 2 in drive B. If you have a hard disk system, make sure your WordStar program files are in your current directory. Log on to drive A. 4. Next you'll specify which version of WordStar you have and which printer(s) you'll be using. If you have WordStar 3.30, and your printer is: o Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer, or any other supported printer except the Diablo 630 ECS printer, use the filename HP330. o Diablo 630 ECS, or any other supported printer except the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer, use the filename ECS330. If you have WordStar 3.31, and your printer is: o Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer, or any other supported printer except the Diablo 630 ECS printer, use the filename HP331. o Diablo 630 ECS, or any other supported printer except the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer, use the filename ECS331. Type the filename, a space, the drive letter where your program files are located, and a colon, then press Return. For example, if you were using the filename "HP330" and your program files were on drive B, you would type HP330 B: and press Return. July 1985 WordStar 3.30 and 3.31 WSENHANC.TXT Page 3 5. The program automatically copies the files onto your disk. When that's finished, the regular WordStar installation program begins. From this point on, answer the questions as they're presented on your screen. When you're asked for the name of the file to install, be sure to press Return to accept WSU.COM as the correct file. Remember: You MUST reinstall WordStar using WSU.COM to ensure its correct operation. 6. When you're asked the name of the installed WordStar file, press Return to accept WS.COM or type a different filename of your choice. 7. During the installation of WordStar, you must install the specific printer you'll be using. To do this, choose Menu of Printers (Choice A) from the Installation Menu. If you had previously customized other features (function keys, help levels, etc.), you'll need to customize them again. Choose Menu of WordStar Features (Choice C) from the Installation Menu. To change onscreen colors, choose Color Installation (Choice T) from the Menu of WordStar Features. If you have WordStar 3.30, make sure you do NOT use the BASIC program WSCOLOR.BAS. Refer to your WordStar Installation Manual if you need further assistance. 8. If you're going to be using the Diablo 630 ECS printer, copy the MATH.TST file from the Printer-Support Enhancement Disk to your WordStar Program Disk or into your WordStar directory. 9. Once you've finished the installation process and are back at the system prompt, make a backup copy of your newly installed WordStar program files. Be sure to copy the following updated files: WS.COM WSMSGS.OVR WSOVLY1.OVR WINSTALL.EXE WS.INS This backup copy will be your new master program disk. Keep it with your original WordStar disk(s) for safekeeping. If you have a floppy disk system, copy the files from this new master program disk to any working copy of WordStar you may already be using. If you have a hard disk system, copy this disk to any directories containing your WordStar program files. Note: If you have WordStar 3.30 with a hard or floppy disk system, make sure you delete the outdated files WINSTALL.COM and WINSTALL.OVR. July 1985 WordStar 3.30 and 3.31 WSENHANC.TXT Page 4 10. You can now use WordStar with the additional supported printers. For complete information on using these printers, read the PRNTINFO.WS file on the Printer-Support Enhancement Disk for WordStar 3.30 and 3.31. To see this file, at the system prompt type TYPE PRNTINFO.WS and press Return. Installing Optional Programs o If you have WordStar 3.30 and CorrectStar or TelMerge, you'll need to reinstall these programs after you've used the Printer-Support Enhancement Disk. See the instructions for installation of CorrectStar and TelMerge in their appropriate manuals. o If you have WordStar 3.30 and MailMerge 3.31 or 3.32, you'll need to reinstall MailMerge after you've used the Printer-Support Enhancement Disk. (MailMerge 3.30 does not need to be installed.) To do this: 1. Place the WordStar Program Disk in one drive, and the MailMerge disk in the other. (If you have a hard disk system, all files should be in the same hard disk directory.) 2. Make sure you're logged on to the drive where the MailMerge files are located. At the system prompt, type INSTALL MM and press Return. Then follow the onscreen instructions. o If you have WordStar 3.31 (WordStar Professional and Professional Plus) and CorrectStar, you'll need to reinstall CorrectStar after you've used the Printer-Support Enhancement Disk. See the installation instructions in the CorrectStar manual. ===USING THE PRINTER-SUPPORT ENHANCEMENT DISK ON SINGLE-SIDED DRIVES=== If your WordStar release is on two disks and you're using a single- sided, two floppy disk system, you'll use a procedure different from the one above. 1. Make a copy of your original WordStar program disks. 2. Place the copy of the disk from step 1 that contains the WSOVLY1.OVR file in drive B. 3. Place the Printer-Support Enhancement Disk in drive A. July 1985 WordStar 3.30 and 3.31 WSENHANC.TXT Page 5 4. Replace the WSOVLY1.OVR file on drive B with the correct file from drive A (see below). To do this, type COPY A:(filename) B:WSOVLY1.OVR where (filename) stands for the appropriate filename. The filename you use will depend on your printer and your version of WordStar: If you're installing the HP LaserJet or any of the other printers (except the Diablo 630 ECS) for WordStar 3.30, use the filename WSOVLY1.HP0 Iæ you'rå installinç thå Diablï 63° ECÓ oò anù oæ thå otheò printeró (excepô thå HÐ LaserJet© foò WordStaò 3.30, use the filename WSOVLY1.EC0 If you're installing the HP LaserJet or any of the other printers (except the Diablo 630 ECS) for WordStar 3.31, use the filename WSOVLY1.HP1 If you're installing the Diablo 630 ECS or any of the other printers (except the HP LaserJet) for WordStar 3.31, use the filename WSOVLY1.EC1. 5. If you have WordStar 3.30, do the following: 1. Place the disk with WINSTALL.COM and WINSTALL.OVR in drive B. 2. Type DEL B:WINSTALL.* 3. Type COPY A:WINSTALL.EXE B: 4. Type COPY A:WS.INS B: If you have WordStar 3.31, do the following: 1. Place the disk with WINSTALL.EXE in drive B. 2. Type COPY A:WINSTALL.EXE B: 3. Type COPY A:WS.INS B: 6. You can now install WordStar with the additional supported printers by using WINSTALL. (For full information on using WINSTALL, see your WordStar Installation Manual.)
